If Ward = Crawford, and Crawford = Darling, then Ward = Darling....right?

...not sure the transitive property of equality is applicable to goaltenders though.
Hey, I'm not the person saying any of those comparisons are good. I'm just saying that if Crawford is about the same as Ward, we'd be better off this year as Ward has been decent. And I think the mantra around here last year was that "if we just had league average goal tending..." Well, Ward is giving us about league average goal tending. And if we had two of him, my guess is we'd be in the playoffs given that with Ward and Darling we are just a point outside of that right now.

If Crawford was the starter for the Canes, I suspect his numbers would not be appreciably different than Ward's.

Crawford is a fine player, but his stats are bolstered by playing behind arguably the best team of his era.

Over that time period (2010-2018), Crawford has a .919 sv% while Ward is at .912 sv%.

I view Ward and Crawford as similar calibre players.

I don't disagree, but I think it's mostly a matter of Ward being underrated. Aside from a couple of really bad seasons (which, again, it's extremely uncommon to find a goalie like Crawford who is fine every year) he has been better than his reputation. The difference between them is that Crawford has yet to have that implosion season, and at age 33 he's getting close to finishing out a career without one.

So if that was the case, we'd have two goalies this year with about a .910 sv% and 2.65 GAA and records of about 15-7-3 each instead of one with 0.892 sv% and 3.06 GAA and a record 9-14-6?

Yeah, that would be terrible...

OK, my inference from your first reply was apparently wrong.

I'm not understanding why the Canes would be better off this year if Ward and Crawford were in fact similar quality players...maybe I'm missing something from an earlier discussion.

Another point on this, if Peters goes, who comes in?

There's a real good chance Joel Quenneville comes available this summer, and I'm pretty sure that would pique our interest. There are others, too, who could be available this summer who aren't now. We really have no reason to fire Peters, only to promote Brindy and/or Smith (the Canes would almost certainly make them co-coaches). We'd have to have our next coach ready to step in, and I'm not sure that's possible. And Paul Maurice is busy.

Q already knows some players.

On one hand, this is encouraging. On the other hand, I have to wonder if he would actually want to come back and coach the guys who were deemed expendable.

Or, on a broader scale, would he actually want to coach the Carolina Hurricanes at all? I mean this is a guy who can pick and choose from job offers, and who is fully aware that probably 25 spots will come open within the next 3 years. What are we offering him that would be too much to pass up, other than the opportunity to reunite with his former 4th liners, 3rd pairing guy, and backup goalie?

I’d love it to happen, but I’m not optimistic.

If I recall, Q is maybe the second highest paid coach behind Babcock at around $6 million? Aside from him not likely choosing here when he can choose wherever he wants, that's a lot of money. That would truly show where Dundon is at in being willing to spend that kind of money to turn this team around.

Where else would Q go that would be more attractive? Maybe NYR? If I were a coach, I wouldn't mind taking on a team with a young, solid foundation and new billionaire owner that has expressed his desire to spend whatever he needs to win. Not saying it'll happen, but I don't see why Carolina would be such a terrible option.

More likely, he just sits on that fat salary and waits for an opportunity to come along which would please him.

We have a young solid foundation, but nothing so special that it would make someone choose us over an opportunity to coach a glamor franchise.

Well, as I mentioned in the other thread... I was excited about Darling and Kruger... I should probably stop wanting anything from Chicago at this point.

I thought I heard Saad is rumored to be available. Does RF go back to the Blackhawks well yet again? He's kind of 3 for 5.

Versteeg/Nordstrom worked out well and also got a couple of picks in that deal (3rd from the Hawks, 5th and Zykov for Versteeg as a rental).
The TT/Bickell deal worked out well. (won't include Bickell in this due to his illness).
TVR is working out well.
Kruger didn't work out well.
Darling didn't work out well
