Since the season is over, figure we can start giving out some grades. Player discussion only, not coaches or GM talk. Also try to add some good things because it wasn't ALL bad on an individual level.

I think our future at blueline looks bright from what we saw this year. Merrill looks like he can really develop into the package player. He has really looked excellent since he was called up (rookie mistakes here and there of course).

Gely looks good offensively, especially on the power play. He has more to work on. His defensive game needs to improve, and I want to see more from him offensively 5 on 5. I think he will though and become a good player.

Jagr has obviously been excellent, and I definitely want one more year of him.

I think Henrique has taken some solid positive steps into becoming a big foundation player for us.

Greene is a pure work horse.

Wait Eddy what are the rules? Can I, for example, as the person giving out the grades refuse to grade a player based on how awful they are. Just straight up drop them from the class, so to speak.

Jagr A++++++++ Somebody get this guy a contract and a crown. Name him king of the team.

Zajac B/B- Finishing the season exceptionally strong, started the season exceptionally bad. Got over mourning of his buddy Parise

Zubrus D Still a horse on the boards, but wore down too quickly. Very little scoring. Possibly hurt?

Elias B+ Still scores at a phenominal clip on such a mediocre team. Gotta go to the Jagr school of physical endurance to stave off injuries. Please work on your shootout technique

Henrique A Took it to a new level. A beast and threat on the PK. Could have scored 30. See Elias vis-a-vis shootout

Clowe C Injuries again. It took a while to get his used to new teammates. Showed flashes of the player he was in SJ.

Ryder F- This system is not suited for him. Timid, slow, and invisible most of the time. Yeah, he's almost got 20 goals but the goalless droughts are just insane.

Rutuu C+ Some nights he's excellent and some nights he's meh.

Brunner C- See Rutuu. He seems to mentally checkout often and at times no hockey sense. Makes up for it with blazing quickness. He's a second year NHL who could improve if he has the right teacher.

Carter C See Rutuu. There was a long period of time where he didn't do much. He's been noticeable lately. Still worries the hell out of Ranger fans:D

Gionta C Still brings speed and physicality. Decent on the PK. Still frequently trails the play.

Bernier F A 50 game goal drought? Hands of some metal alloy. How the HELL did you get a chance to play with Patty. Even he, who made Clarkson look like Joe Sakic at times, couldn't make you better.

Josefson (as a hockey player...C) Flashes of good, flashes of rookie. (as Lou's caretaker...A+. Dude was in bed after Wheel of Fortune)

Zidlicky B+ Cleaned up his defensive coverage a little from last year. A horse as a playmaker. Still took too many dumb penalties.

Fayne B Inconsistent to start the year. Looked like Mike Mottau. Got better playing with Andy Greene. Looks like the old Mark Fayne.

Greene A Contract extension Lou...please?

Volchenkov B- Better than last year (he looked like KHL fodder then) Got back his PK and shot blocking swag.

Salvador F Done as an NHL player and little leadership skill.

Merrill B Did well as a rookie, though should have never had to have been called up in the first place. Needs to put on some pounds and work on his skating.

Harrold B Still a very good 7th D man. Excellent with sheltered minutes.

Gelinas C Needs some defensive seasoning in the minors. Needs to add a little meanness to his game. Still excellent offensively. He's THE reason the PP clicked this year.

Larsson Inc.

Schneider B+ The future and the face of the franchise has to be him. Learned to play the puck better. Kept us in a TON of games. Let in some really bad goals at inopportune times. Bad in the shootout.

Brodeur C Age caught up which is why he doesn't get a lower grade. Had flashes of brilliance. But too many soft goals.

Fatigue. Bleed is just tired.

:laugh: Well I am pretty sure giving a F to a player is the same idea. No credits, repeat the class or drop out. No graduation for you.

Only Fs I'd give out are Sal and Ryder. Ryder would get some slack if he didn't float around. He is useless when not scoring and doesn't score often enough right now.

I give Bernier a D since there was a point he was the only guy screening goalies and we scored a few because of it.

Copied from the "Mid season report Card thread". Final grades, stats and comments in bold.

Lou = C+
Made the best of a bad situation in the offseason after the departure of Kovalchuk. Unfortunately I think he has been poor during the season given he hasn't addressed the team needs for more offensive spark nor settled the ridiculous situation with having far too many defenseman.
Final grade: C
Should of got some scoring help at the trade deadline. He needs a very good offseason of signing UFA and getting rid of the deadwood (cough Salvador) to turn this team around.

DeBoer = D
Not a fan. The team can't seem to score and I absolutely hate his constant personnel shuffling especially regarding the young players. He has also gone to Brodeur too many times.
Final grade: D
Needs to go. Not just because we missed the playoffs but if this team is going to turn it around, it is going to be the young players that will lead the way. And DeBoer has been proven in two franchises now that he is terrible at developing/coaching young players.

Forwards
Jagr = B+
Had a great start but I expect him to hit a wall in the 2nd half of the season.
End of season points prediction: 20G 33A 53PTS
Final grade: A
Points to date: 24G 40A 64PTS
Team MVP. I thought he would slow down in the 2nd half of the season but he proved me wrong. He needs to be bought back.

Zajac = C
Should be the teams 3rd line shut down center. Unfortunately he is being played on the no. 1 line and the team is 'kind of' suffering because he can't score consistently. Excellent defensively.
End of season points prediction: 10G 20A 30PTS
Final grade: B
Points to date: 17G 28A 45PTS
OK my points prediction was off by a lot. I think at the halfway point I was disappointed with Zajac's lack of production despite centering Jagr for the entire year. Credit to Zajac in that he had a much better 2nd half. I still don't want him as a no. 1 center though.

Zubrus = B+
Playing to expectations and has found some nice chemistry with Jagr.
End of season points prediction: 16G 22A 38PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 13G 13A 26PTS
Really hit the wall in the 2nd half of the season and was rightly moved off the no 1 line. I think his future is a bottom 6 role that is defensively responsible.

Clowe = NR
Been good since his has been back from a concussion. The team does need his toughness. Lets hope he can chip in a few goals too.
End of season points prediction: 10G 13A 23PTS
Final grade: C
Points to date: 7G 19A 26PTS
Considering how well Clarkson went this season for Toronto we probably got the better production from Clowe despite him missing the majority of the first half the season. His concussion issues are a major worry though. We do need more physicality and a fighter for the team. If Clowe can't do that anymore because the next head knock might be a career ending one, then Lou's made a major mistake signing him for that cap hit and for that many years.

Henrique = C
Starting to find some form now after a very slow start. Needs to stay at Center imo. Chemistry with Clowe and Ryder hopefully can continue.
End of season points prediction: 20G 20A 40PTS
Final grade: B
Points to date: 25G 18A 43PTS
Decent season from Adam and he really step up his goalscoring in the 2nd half. I've always said that he should be playing center but after seeing him work well with Elias playing at wing maybe that where he should be next season.

Ryder = B-
Leads the team in goalscoring. Another who had a slow start that is starting to turn it around.
End of season points prediction: 30G 22A 52PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 17G 16A 33PTS
Major disappointment. Yeah we know he is steaky but unfortunately he completely disappeared in the 2nd half of the season where he needed to continue on his strong mid season form. Lou should trade his ass

Elias = B
Tough season for Elias given injuries and he can't find a consistent linemate. Will probably have to go it alone if continued to play with Bernier.
End of season points prediction: 20G 40A 60PTS
Final grade: C+
Points to date: 17G 34A 51PTS
More injuries for Patty and a frustrating 2nd half of season as well. Perhaps a little unfair but I thought he would be better, we kind of need him to better after Kovalchuk and Parise departing the team. Maybe Patty can't be that guy anymore given his age.

Loktionov = D
The Devils game him a chance to estabish himself as a potential 6 NHL player. He has disappointed. Looks lost without Kovy and probably won't be here next season.
End of season points prediction: 5G 10A 15PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 4G 8A 12PTS
Traded for Tuomo Ruutu and currently proving the Devils wrong that perhaps he deserved more ice time.

Ruutu
Final grade: C
Points to date: 3G 5A 8PTS
Not the goalscorer the team needed after the Devils acquired him at the trade deadline. Plays a similar game to Zubrus, his future like Zuby should be a bottom 6 role only.

Brunner = C
Either very good or very bad. Needs to stay with Elias when he returns from injury and hopefully that will bring some consistency to his performances.
End of season points prediction: 20G 13A 33PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 11G 13A 24PTS
Like Ryder, a major disappointment. I would look to trade him and hopefully sign a better UFA as his replacement.

Carter = C
Forms a solid 4th line with Gionta and Bernier and I expect that to continue now that he is back from injury.
End of season points prediction: 9G 10A 19PTS
Final grade: C
Points to date: 6G 3A 9PTS
I think he is the best player of the CBGB line but that doesn't mean I want him back next season. I would rather move Zubrus and Ruutu down to a 4th line role and not re-sign any of the 4th line .

Gionta = C+
Very similar to Carter in that he has been injured for a good portion of the season.
End of season points prediction: 4G 10A 14PTS
Final grade: C
Points to date: 4G 6A 10PTS
Has a lot of heart but just isn't good enough. Should be moved on .

Bernier = C+
Had an extended stint as Elias's winger and proved quite clearly he is a bottom six player.
End of season points prediction: 6G 12A 18PTS
Final grade: F
Points to date: 3G 8A 11PTS
For someone that saw way too much time with Elias, he really had a terrible season. .

Boucher = C
Has shown some hustle since his call up but probably needs to be sent back down again once Elias and Brunner are back healthy.
End of season points prediction: 2G 8A 10PTS
Final grade: C
Points to date: 2G 5A 7PTS
Didn't play much if at all in the 2nd half of the season. He will get another look at training camp but I'm not sure that there will be a position open. For Boucher it is top 6 role or bust. He isn't going to make it as a 3rd liner.

Josefson = F
I'm with DeBoer and no longer rate him as a potential NHL player. Should be moved on at the end of the season
End of season points prediction: 0G 1A 1PTS
Final grade: F
Points to date: 1G 2A 3PTS
My thought haven't waivered on JJ since midseason. I still don't think he is an NHL player but I do acknowledge that given he is young and cheap, he could be kept as depth if the team does decide to cut loose the entire CBGB line.

Tedenby = F
See Josefson
End of season points prediction: 1G 0A 1PTS
Final grade: F
Points to date: 1G 0A 1PTS
See Josefson. At least I correctly predicted his final end of season points!

Janssen = C+
Doing his job but am a bit surprised his hasn't fought more.
End of season prediction: 88PIM
Final grade: D
PIM to date: 22PIM
We have become a team that no longer fights therefore Janssen we no longer need you

Defense

Greene = A
For the 2nd season in a row, he has been the team consistent and probably best player. Starting to produce offensively given the PP time he has received from Kovy's departure
End of season points prediction: 14G 30A 44PTS
Final grade: B
Points to date: 8G 24A 32PTS
OK I got carried away with the points prediction but another strong season for Andy, clearly he is the team's no 1 dman.

Zidlicky = B
Nice season thus far. He is was he is, great at moving the puck but suspect defensively.
End of season points prediction: 15G 32A 47PTS
Final grade: B
Points to date: 10G 30A 40PTS
Happy with Zid's year. We probably could use him again next season but we also desperately need to give Larsson, Gelinas more of an opportunity. I would move Zid on an use the salary cap saved to get a scorer.

Gelinas = B+
We have a got a potential all star here with the right coach. Was great stepping up from AHL when injuries hit the D. Unfortunately though with the veterans returning, he may not get a look in the 2nd half of the season.
End of season points prediction: 6G 16A 22PTS
Final grade: C+
Points to date: 7G 22A 29PTS
He had a tough 2nd half of the season defensively and as a result become somewhat a power play specialist. His potential is huge with the right coach and d partner to watch his back. I'm excited to see him develop his game more next season. I think the defensive mistakes will become less and less with more experience

Larsson = C+
Looked very good when paired with Gelinas but unfortunately I don't think DeBoer rates his game. Been sent to AHL and quite possibly won't make back up to the big club for the rest of the season.
End of season points prediction: 2G 4A 6PTS
Final grade: D+
Points to date: 1G 2A 3PTS
Badly needs a fresh opportunity. I'm not sure if the Devils can give him that if they want to keep DeBoer as head coach. I would be open to trade him providing he brings back a return that addresses the team needs. Yakupov anyone?

Volchenkov = B
Having a very solid year. Shot-blocking PK specialist.
End of season points prediction: 2G 12A 14PTS
Final grade: C+
Points to date: 0G 7A 7PTS
He is better than Salvador and given the choice between the two, I would rather keep Volchenkov than Salvador. I don't think we should play with both of them next season. Too similar players

Salvador = D
Been injured for majority of the season but he also hasn't looked that great since his return. For the 2nd half of the season, I can see DeBoer playing him the most minutes behind Greene given he is the team captain.
End of season points prediction: 1G 10A 11PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 1G 3A 4PTS
He is the worst defenseman on this team. Unfortunately he is the team captain and coaches pet so he plays way too many minutes and way too many important situations in which he can't handle. There is no coincidence that a lot of the teams blown lead happen because Salvador was on the ice for the GWG or GTG.

Fayne = B-
Having a bounce back season since been paired up with Andy Greene again.
End of season points prediction: 3G 9A 12PTS
Final grade: B-
Points to date: 4G 7A 11PTS
Forms a very effective pairing with Andy Greene. He is underated and I think should be re-signed. It wouldn't surprise me though if he wants to test the UFA market given his past as a DeBoer whipping boy last season

Merrill = C+
Been steady since his AHL callup but probably now need to be sent back down given the logjam at D.
End of season points prediction: 0G 2A 2PTS
Final grade: B-
Points to date: 2G 8A 10PTS
Good rookie season and very reliable. Will play every game next season providing he has no injuries

Harrold = D
I don't think he is going to play much now given the emergence of Gelinas and Merril from the AHL.
End of season points prediction: 0G 2A 2PTS
Final grade: D
Points to date: 0G 4A 4PTS
I'm fine with him being the team 7th or 8th defenseman. No more than that. He shouldn't be playing ahead of Gelinas or Larsson

Goalies

Brodeur = C
Has been the team's no. 1 and a .902 save percentage would put him among the bottom 10 starters in the NHL. Should probably be a backup only but I'm starting to believe that will never happen given his legacy and contribution to this team for his career. DeBoer still thinks he can be the Brodeur of old and gives him way too many starts.
End of season prediction: 20W 2.50GAA .908 SAV%
Final grade: D
Stats to date: 18W 2.54GAA .900 SAV%
Marty you are a legend of this team but it is time to retire or move on

Schneider = C+
The stats show he has been decent but unfortunately doesn't have the wins on the board and as a result tends to not playing many games in a row that he probably should. If given a chance in the 2nd half of the season, I think he can help sneak this team in the playoffs.
End of season prediction: 21W 2.05GAA .920 SAV%
Final grade: B+
Stats to date: 16W 2.00GAA .919 SAV%
My stats prediction was almost spot on. It is time to give him 60-70 games next season and he will lead this team into playoffs, even if our offensive production remains the same. He is that good.

I can't believe I'm seeing anything other than A or B for Zidlicky. C and C-?

I am his biggest critic and this year he actually made his risks worthwhile. He scored a ton, kept the puck alive in the O zone, had far less stupid delay of game penalties, actually played some decent defense breaking up plays rather than staying on the perimeter watching and even led some post whistle scrums to stir things up at the right times.

I was stunned how well he did compared to previous seasons. I expected him to keep falling into old habits but he didn't outside a game here or there.

stats_zps3496fe4f.jpg~original

Maybe there were just far worse players to notice or something but his stats say he got much better with more ice time to boot.

He was in the average group for me, with Zajac, Clowe, Fayne, Brunner, etc. I give Zid a B-. He produces offense from the back end, but he takes way too many stupid penalties and makes way too many stupid decisions.

60 PIMS isn't too crazy. He's not exactly Verbeek or Dano out there. We took the second least penalties in the league and Marek wasn't even top 50 in the league in PIMs.

He's 113th

Exit 88 GSPW
Jagr A+(didn't expect him to become the lead scorer on the team at his age. Give this guy the big C already)
Henrique B+ (Only because he picked up his game after the olympic break)
Elias B (Same as #14)
Ruutu B- (He had some decent moments but didn't produce enough)
Ryder D- (Woohoo, he scored one in a blue moon. Who cares)
Carter D (Same as Ryder.Not worthy)
Gionta C+(He has heart and speed but is just no hockey sense)
Zuby C-(Went well in the first half of season, downhill after October)
Gelly C (Has potential, came back as a stronger player after he was sent back to AHL but still needs to learn some D)
Zidlicky B-(When he wasn't getting a penalty, he could make moves and plays for the Offense on the Ice.Seemed to understand Jagr's play style)
Volchenkov C-(Not worth my time)
Fayne & Greene B+ (Made the occasional shots on goal creating plays. Strong pairing and work horses)
Big Sally boy D- (Do I even need to say it?)
Sislo C (Didn't see much from him besides speed and the occasional hit on the boards)
Josefson C (Same as Sislo)
Clowe B (He did what he was here to do which was hit people and start S***. When he wasn't hurt, he actually did well and was a decent replacement on Jagr's line for Zuby)
Brunner C (Occasional play/goal maker, nothing special)
Bernier C (Same as Brunner, was injured every other damn game.)
Zajac B+ (Looked great with Jagr and Zuby on top line for first half of the season, but then Zuby became dead weight and it all went down hill from there. Decent plays toward the end of the season with good Defense when needed)
Merrill B+ (He has come a long way and I believe he has a chance at becoming a great defensemen.)
Larrson and Harrold N/A (Didn't get to see enough of them to get a good feel on there skills. Both had there good and bad plays)

***Goalies***

Brodeur B (What can I say. He became very whiny and complained alot after the Stadium Series game. I can understand he wants to play but think he should come to terms that he is not going to be a starter goalie on anyones team so might as well be our backup at this point. Hope he stays next year ofcourse)

Schneider B+ (He was pretty consistent for most of the season. When he had to make the big saves, he did which kept us alive in a lot of the games that ended up going to OT. He is and should be the future starting goaltender for the Devils in the upcoming season or so. Seemed to be picking up some things from Brodeur in practice (Playing the puck out to center when given the chance)

We all came into this season knowing we were at best a .500 team and that is exactly what we got. Marty himself said the Devils have accepted mediocrity. Here's to hoping that SallyBoy gets sent back to the AHL, Jagr stays and becomes our Captain next year and Lou gets some people who are willing to go the extra mile like Jags does to keep there game going.

Since we have plenty of time this offseason, how about a player poll that runs for 2 days per player, keeping it simple, Keep or Move

Mods, good idea?
