I think Betteman made it clear. Teams were warned that they would have to operate under a cap once a new CBA was in place and they had enough forewarning to get ther financial house in order. Teams like the Penguins certainly prepared for it. I suspect they will be the recipient of many a good player come equalization time not to mention a good chunk of revenue sharing, and maybe even a Sydney Crosby to boot. Any team that did not heed Betteman's advice did so knowingly and will have to suffer the consequences. It strikes me that the owners did not go to all this time and trouble only to issue a "get out of jail - free" card to free spending owners.GregStack said:That being said, I'd still like to see a buffer zone before any hard cap gets implemented simply because some teams are presently over it (I'm well aware they chose to be)...but who knows buyouts might be possible with resignings and such immediately after.

Also, the pens just hired an advisor from the John Kerry party who grew up in Pittsburgh to help in the political fight to secure one of the slots licences that would help fund a new arena.
Trust me, there are many other teams that have more problems than the Pens.

In that case, why did they wait this long?!
Its Bob Goodenow's way of doing business. Sit there and wait.chriss_co said:If the players accept this deal, then they are accepting a salary cap?

The players have their cap offer, have been told they are auto workers, will they accept to save the season? Must be a tough week for the players. And some owners. Pressure is mounting.
Its a cap. The players have said they wont accept a cap. Rumour Blogs have tried to imply they would. Some players obviously would. I guess we'll soon find out how many.
Top Shelf said:Not to worry - we've got Daly and Saskin to put any potential flames of optimism:
"''I'm not sure there is any difference of opinion,'' Daly told the Globe and Mail. ''I like to remain hopeful, but if the concepts we discussed with the NHLPA on Thursday night are not something that forms a basis for serious negotiations, I have to admit that I don't have much optimism that there will be hockey this year.''
''We are hoping to hear back from the union soon,'' Daly told TSN. We feel that what we laid out on Thursday night could form the basis of a new agreement. But I'm not sure the union shares that view.''
It doesn't.
"Bill knows that the concepts they discussed with us on Thursday would not form the basis for an agreement, so he should not be surprised that he hasn't heard from us," NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin said in a statement. "We were very clear on Thursday that we would not be negotiating over his proposed concepts.""
