What would you like him to do?

He's a 19-year-old defenseman playing against men.

And he's never been an offensive defenseman.
Show something. I just don't agree with that pick. According to the draft experts he was a reach there. If he ever makes it it's 2028 or after.

Yager, Ilyin for example were solid picks as to where they were drafted.

Then say that then. I don't think he's some great pick. His ceiling is low. But he's not going to "show" you "something." He's a defensive defenseman who moves well. There's no flash to his game.

I get that and I've seen a couple of their games. Just seems vanilla.

If we are picking top 10, I would prefer us taking a center unless Celebrini, Demidov, Catton, Helenius, and Eiserman are all off the table. Then I could be okay taking on of a several top 10 dmen available - with RH RD being a priority.

I think it's easier to find top 4 capable dmen in FA than young centers.

Outside of Helenius, Zayne Parekh is probably my favorite defensive prospect in years. Would be nice to get a defensive centerpiece like that.

I'll post my top 12 with some brief thoughts on who I like and who I hope they avoid, as well as who I think could step in right away and in what role and who needs more time (or won't come over). Still watching clips. Probably should wait until after the U18s too.

Helenius is just not talented enough for me that early. Even if he hits- I don’t see him able to carry the play at the NHL level. More of a piece/part to a line. How many 1Cs are his size and bring no elite level tool to the table? Maybe Aho?

I only take Parekh if I’m at the end of the lottery. Too many legit holes and projection for a player type that honestly isn’t that valuable (small offense only D). I love gambles like him mid 1st round or later but tough sell in the top 10.

My thinking is if the Pens draft 8-9 Id like to take the faller of Demidov, Catton, Yakemchuk. Love Buium but hes more of a gamble physically. Think Catton and Yakemchuk could play next year.

The rankings this year are pretty varied. Celebrini is the only consensus pick. Demidov is pretty close at #2 but plenty of guys have him going later. That's where I look at Helenius and can't pinpoint where he might do. After Celebrini, he's arguably the next best center - right there with Catton. But say you're picking at #2 or #3, I don't know how you could pass on Demidov of Levshunov. It's really tough pegging the top 10 right now. Very reminiscent of 2006, where it was Eric Johnson as the clear #1, and then you had Toews, Backstrom, Staal, and Kessel at 2-5, and you could legitimately take any player in any slot (certain a center at any spot. I think Kessel was going #5 but still).

What's your take on Dickenson? He's climbed the ranks a bit and looks to be at the 6/7/8 range, but I don't have a ton of hype over him. Granted, it's mostly from highlights, but watching them, I never would have pegged him as a top-10 prospect. Unless I'm just completely off. He looks like he would develop into Dumoulin based on scouting reports. Couldn't tell if it's an indicator of a weak draft or if I'm just completely underrating him.
I’m liking Levshunov the more I see him. Really nothing *not* to like, in fact.
He'd be a great pick. As a RH RD, I think you could be looking at a decent Karlsson replacement. Not in overall skill set obviously but an anchor 2nd pairing RD until Letang retires. I imagine by then we'd know if he could be a potential top pairing replacement.

Dumoulin, but a better skater with more confidence and ability offensively. Maybe Marcus Pettersson? Something in that vein. He isn't going to be an Offensive defenseman by nature, but he's competent with the puck and can contribute to the breakout.

Belarus Rd from Michigan St will be gone unless Pens finish say 9th and move up to 4. Even then he is top 3 probably. Like Yakemchuk size and offensive skills if selecting 8 to 10. Graf looks to be Boston bound. Love to get him as Pens need to add much more to the system.

Yeah, that's what got out of his highlights and scouting reports. Makes me wishy-washy on using a top 10 pick on him. But I mean, he'd instantly be our best defensive prospect so, whatever.

Unless there is a can't miss forward available (under the assumption we do finish bottom 10 and keep the pick), I assume they go for a dman as they have Yager, Pono, Koivunen, and Cruz/Broz/Ilyin/etc in the system but really only Pickering and a couple lottery tickets on the back end.

Drafting a defensive specialist, especially high, is an awful idea. These guys become more archaic every year.
