I think Raffl's days as a Flyer are numbered. He's probably deemed replaceable since we signed Weise and he could very well be gone by trade deadline next season because he's much easier to trade than Weise.

Why would someone want him with two more years at 2.35 mil? He is now just a 4th liner who doesn't kill penalties. No value in the NHL market anymore.....

Be honest? I literally just posted numbers. What's more honest than simple numbers? Cold hard facts? Nothing is up for debate or interpretation.

He has 51 goals in 269 NHL games. That's a pace of 15.5 goals per 82 games. Those are facts. No bias, no opinion, just facts.

Even if you take away his 21 goal season, which was unsustainable, his pace only changes to 12 goals per 82 games... still more ability than a person making 900k.

some people just have blind hatred for certain players. Is Raffl a perfect player? no, but he is fine in his role.
Who would you rather have fighting it out for the bottom 6? guys like Raffl or guys like VdV and PEB.

There are quite a few cro-magnon level thinkers roaming these boards.

I posted facts too. He has scored over 30 points only once. And last year scored 11 points in 52 games. He did not deserve 3 years term at 2.35 and I can get someone at 900k to do what he does. If he was a free agent right now; he would not get 2.35 mil for 3 years and he would not have gotten that back then....that's facts, no bias just common sense. Do you think his play has lived up to the contract? I am asking for your opinion now.....

Yeah, lets look at this long list of UFAs who will only cost 900k but can pot that many goals per year.

Oh wait.....

Has he lived up to the contract? Well he was injured last year, played only 52 games, and still put up 8 goals, so not too bad. Whether he's slightly overpaid or not isn't a big issue, but he sure as hell isn't a 900k player... that's just unrealistic.

Raffl scored 28 & 31 points, which is very good for his current contract and it obviously had impact on his deal. Any player may have a down year, he's still only 28 years old. Let's see what he does next season, if he scores 20+ points then his deal is perfectly fine, if he's just slightly under 20 pts and stays impactful and reliable two-way player then it is only slight overpayment and nothing to be mad about, his contract is also only for next 2 seasons.

He's valuable in different aspects of the game, rather than scoring. We all know that. You are trying to find problems in areas where they are not.

And you will have very hard time finding Raffl's type of player at 900k, lol. Especially in free agency.

Thanks, BillM, for your article on Bellemare. I very much enjoyed the read and it gave me new insight into what he is well liked (allegedly) around the league. It makes more sense why LV would select him.
Good article. Always liked him and always found the hate towards him from certain people irritating.

I'd like to see a list of recent UFA forwards who scored 30 points and got less than $2.35m.

Raffl has not been overpaid up until this point.

Since he will now be a 4th liner when we are healthy, he will be slightly overpaid, but his ability to slide up into a higher line makes that difference of a few hundred thousand worth it.

Yeah the way I see it, 30 points is worth $3 million.

50 points is worth $5 million..and so on and so forth.

Thanks BP....good insight

Seems like a good morale booster in the locker room and good soldier for the coaches. I've supervised workers like this....I had one in particular. He was a joy to have as worker and I always went out of my way to make sure he was happy and endorsing him for growth opportunities. I can see how this appreciation for character would translate to coaching and sports...

Meltzer's article was good. Go read it.

Acknowledges that PEB is universally well liked by many different groups in the NHL, but isn't loved by people who put stock in analytics (or scoring), is more of an older school 4th liner (who wouldn't be expected to shine in those areas), but also acknowledges he is replaceable. I'd say from a general consensus here, that "we" want more out of a 4th liner. Anecdote at the end.

Hopefully from here onward, we will be getting those 30 point seasons from guys coming thru our system on ELC so we will no longer have to pay UFA's or UFA'a to be that money.

Grabner scored 18 points then got $1.65m AAV.

Almost as if 10 points loosely translates into $1m.

For fun:

2.35 million:
28 pts in 67 games 2 years ago
31 pts in 81 games 1 year ago

2.5 million
28 pts in 71 games 1 year ago
30 pts in 69 games this year

One guys is now on our 4th line and we got him for free, the other was a top 5 pick and just got traded for Eberle.

:naughty:

So you're saying we could have gotten Eberle (an 80 point winger) for Raffl?!?!?!?!?!?!!

Wow, **** Hextall. Fire him now.

As a free agent, Raffl would get something on the order of $3-4M for 2 years because he's coming off a down season. But he'd make far more than $900K, that's why you pay 10 point 4th line guys who play 10 minutes a night.
Some guys outperformed their first year, most were no better value than Raffl, Raffl was on an 18 point pace coming off a 31 point season.

Riley Sheahan 2016 - 2yr/$4.15 80g 2-11 13
Matt Calvert 2015 - 3yr/$6M 138g 21-18 39
Jason Chimera 2016 - 2yr/$4.5M (37 yrs old) 20-13 33
Matt Martin - 2016 - 4yr/$10M 82g 5-4 9
Vladimar Sobotka 2016- 3yr/$9M 1g, averaged 25 points before

Guys like Tucker and Roussel outperformed, but they were on RFA contracts. Comparables are older players signed as UFAs.

All those names hustle and forcheck and bring more than Raffl.

I don't understand the hate for Raffl. He's a player that can move up the lineup in a pinch and will be good on the fourth line. He has decent defensive awareness and could PK if the coaches would pull their head out of their ***** and actually ice our best PKers.
