They are badly in debt. So why get more in debt with an empty arena? The lesser of the two evils is to have the team stay.

Something called "cutting your losses". Spend another $25m and then watch them walk a year from now, or just walk now and save that money. Fill those dates with an AHL team or college basketball and concerts. It won't be so bad trust me. They did that in the lockout..

He stated his credentials (which were ridiculously impressive)

Mentioned that many studies have shown sports arenas are pretty much always a negative

Said they need to cut losses while they can

Said the anchor tenant Coyotes are an anchor holding you under while you drown

Threatened to sue them for breaking the constitution

mentioned how badly in debt they already are

Thanks

"I believe we have sold out every home game since they've (Coyotes) been here"

This is said after the guy says he's read everything he can on the issue. Unbelievable.

Just to clarify that.
Most sports arenas that are publically owned/built are not a profitable business.

Did you miss the part where it was pointed out there is a $7 million dollar a year shortfall on the arena debt service, even with the Coyotes operating? Based on our local experience, the popular solution would be to sell the arena and convert it to an indoor waterpark.

They still have to pay for the arena they don't own it outright

Yes cut the team salary to the league minimum for next year while they resolve this situation.

They must have gummed the NHL, Hulsizer and the COG to death, because they succeeded in completely scuttling the previous deals, forced the NHL to retain ownership (perhaps for another season), and compelled the COG to again pay directly for hockey team losses. Imagine if they actually had some bite. They would have their adversaries quivering in a corner.

Meanwhile, they might just have forced the NHL and a prospective owner to actually come up with better terms for the COG and its citizens. Not bad, considering their modest investment. Oh, and I gather that the national notoriety afforded by this little escapade is more than they could have ever hoped. As one who really disdains their politics, it is rather disappointing that the characters in this comedy have afforded them such a long standing in centre stage.
Someone who engages in the legal equivalent of a suicide mission (which is what their letter to the bond community was) can gum up anything.

What debt are they adding by letting it sit empty? They're already on the hook for paying it off.

It's committing $25M to ensure it stays open that is adding debt, banking on the hope that the added traffic will increase revenue enough to pay that added debt off PLUS the original debt.
