To quote:

"As the deadline nears for management groups to bid on running Glendale’s Gila River Arena, the NHL's Arizona Coyotes and the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals are staying on the sidelines.

Coyotes President Anthony LeBlanc and Cardinals President Michael Bidwill told The Arizona Republic in separate interviews that their organizations have no intention to submit bids. The arena manager books events and concerts and maintains the facility.

At the time, the Cardinals partnered with venue-management company SMG to bid on the job. Three other competitors also submitted proposals.

The negotiations were covered in the media, but Glendale officials failed to formally inform the Cardinals they weren't selected until after The Republic twice submitted public-records requests for rejection letters. At the time, Cardinals executives considered the matter a professional slight.

Bids are due Dec. 11."

... interesting. December 11th is next week, nearly upon us. Any reports as to who toured the facility leading up to the Deadline?...
And serioulsy, where is LeBlanc thinking he's going to be playing thats acceptable to the NHL if not Talking Stick? And who pays for that?

Some tidbits from the article re: future arena plans, post 2017.

Phoenix officials actively are conducting due diligence, but many questions remain, he said. Among them:

•How much would a new arena cost? The Milwaukee Bucks' planned new arena is pegged at $500 million.
•How much would be privately funded? How much publicly funded? Would the public-funding source be municipal, state or some combination?
•Can voters be sold on the idea of picking up any portion of the bill?
•Where specifically would an arena be built?
•When would it open?
Can the Suns and Coyotes work out an agreement to split revenues

The 15 million dollar question I think most of us here are asking

Coyotes executives don't need firm answers right away, but a clearer direction by the end of the NHL season would be valuable for fans and sponsors alike, LeBlanc said. The Stanley Cup Finals end in mid-June

A little more than 2 weeks :)

Coyotes executives are not looking at options in Las Vegas, Seattle or anywhere else outside of metro Phoenix, LeBlanc said.

“I don’t know if I have to write it in blood for people to finally understand it. I’m serious,” he said.

If this thread morphs into Phoenix CX, it just needs to be worked in the title....the brain is ticking

“I’m not going to waste my time on it. I have a business to run. I have partners to answer to and I have a fiduciary duty to find out what our alternatives are, because we’re not going to take a deal that doesn’t make sense,†LeBlanc said.

Translation: We know we couldn't compete with the incoming bids, so we'll go out noisily and blame everyone else as we leave.

Keystone Cops is probably the most sugar coated term that can pass this sites profanity filters which accurately describes the City of Glendale.

Have NBA/NHL teams ever split revenue?

Under separate ownership? Only ones that come to mind are Chicago and Dallas since those buildings are joint ventures.

Some NBA teams lease from NHL owned/controlled buildings (Boston, Philly and LA), though NBA revenues (TV) are much higher and lessen the needs of building income.

Only NHL team that I can think of that leases an NBA owned/controlled building is the Islanders, but I have a though time seeing the Coyotes getting that of arrangement with the Suns.

Have NBA/NHL teams ever split revenue?

I would imagine situations where the NBA and NHL teams are owned by different groups would split the non NBA/NHL revenue. Bulls and Blackhawks would be one example. But here, they would be 50/50 partners. They each contributed to the construction of the United Center and now split the spoils. If the Coyotes are going to split revenues with the Suns, they will also have to contribute to the construction of a new facility. To do this, they would need a new ownership group that has the financial ability to pay $150+M for a controlling interest in the team and around $150M towards the construction of the new arena. The Suns aren't going to allow the Coyotes to contribute $0 to the construction but are equal partners for revenue.

I'm sorry, folks, I know that we're supposed to cast the Coyotes as the football-humping monkeys, but really... could Glendale be run any more like the Keystone Kops? :shakehead

.... not really, no. Its certainly beyond disingenuous for Hugh & others to be stating how they'd just love it if the Coyotes could stay while really..... theyve filled the moat, released the alligators, pulled up the drawbridge & thats that. No way do they appear to have even the slightest interest in talking with IA and as such, they should state that publicly & admit publicly that in not doing so the team is a goner. Instead, we get this siege mentality but that its all really outside of their control somehow. Real disconnect, covering their *****. No politician wants to be held responsible for the loss of a sports franchise.

Translation: We know we couldn't compete with the incoming bids, so we'll go out noisily and blame everyone else as we leave.

Oh absolutely, and the COG is playing into their hands on this one. Plausible excuse for leaving. Could well be a last ditch, last pitch effort made by IA to the COG after theyve received & read the Bids. Or... no, not at all.

How hard is it for them to send out a letter to those that didn't win the bid? In particular, the Cardinals who also reside in your town. Heck, give them a phone call, whatever. You want to keep a good communication line open.

... interesting. December 11th is next week, nearly upon us. Any reports as to who toured the facility leading up to the Deadline?...
And serioulsy, where is LeBlanc thinking he's going to be playing thats acceptable to the NHL if not Talking Stick? And who pays for that?

I heard some talk in the main Phoenix thread about the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum being a possible landing spot, but the thing would be the oldest venue in the league by a mile, has no revenue-generating amenities, and is more than 1200 seats short of the league minimum. So they'd basically have to tear the place down and put it back up again to make it workable.

Remember, this was when the majority four - Sherwood, Knaack, Martinez, and Chavira - ruled...

That is not the case today...

P.S. The 2013 Beacon proposals are still available on the Glendale web site (http://www.glendaleaz.com/purchasing/beacon.cfm)
and should make for an interesting comparison, if the bidders proposals are made public (fingers crossed)...

Not to mention that, while it is more centrally located, VMC's access avenues are atrocious.

Yes, rather dysfunctional relationship with the Bidwells & the COG... between the Cactus League Clubs including the Reinsdorfs & the City past & present regimes included.

Ya. Former home of the IHL, WHA & WHL Roadrunners. The "original" Saddledome. Thats where I wouldve landed that franchise back in 96. Completely retrofitted the joint. Old Tyme Hockey. Built your core fanbase back up then after 5yrs or so, made plans for a new building. Balsillie's plans for Copps (now FirstOntario) were penciled out at app $185M back in 09 for a full-on reno, so Id imagine AVMC would cost at least that much to bring it into the 21st Century. Even then, Im not so sure the NHL would be willing to play along.

Remember, this was when the majority four - Sherwood, Knaack, Martinez, and Chavira - ruled...

Right. And it was Sherwoods bright idea, that in putting out an RFP theyd gain some leverage with IA in their negotiations... only they didnt, didnt release the inf when strategically it actually mattered & would have. I cant help but think that its entirely possible that the COG is following this same worn path yet again in attempting to force IA to its knees in contrition. Im suspicious of Glendales motives as in particular the Mayor is a professional politician with a great deal of fondness for his entitlements of office. That includes the city being home to 2 major league franchises along with the Cactus League clubs... rubbing elbows with major players & operators. We'll see shortly just how committed to this process they really are as the kitchen heats up from December 11th onward.

Best case scenario the city/county/state pays 50% so coyotes/suns have to come up with 100-150M each/ i have a strange feeling it will be a lot easier for the suns to come up with the money, call it a hunch

To no surprise, CoG has a rather tepid relationship with the Cardinals as well.

Yep, most likely nothing more than a beautiful pipe dream to utilize that wonderful old barn. Unless...... the NHL somehow allows it short term? :)

Do the Suns have any plans for a new building with or without the coyotes?

Yep...

To quote:

"The Suns have a lease for US Airways Center through 2029, so any new-arena plan would need to address the future of that facility, most likely a redevelopment of the site: there are signs of life in downtown Phoenix, and the arena’s location next to Chase Field and the light-rail line would certainly attract the attention of a developer or two."

Yes, Talking Stick Arena needs to be replaced regardless. They are in no rush, though, given the lease they currently enjoy. Every year that passes, Phoenix has less leverage, due to the tribes trying to lure the Suns away.

It was never about getting a hockey-capable arena downtown. That will happen. The problem is that it probably won't happen on a timeline that saves the Coyotes.
