Sign him to a reasonable extension and let him know he's floating between the 2nd and 3rd lines. Otherwise no. His defense doesn't make up for his lack of offense where we can simply hand him a top 6 role.

What 3 wins does to people's evaluations. We lose in 5, Danault is gone. Bye. Don't look back. We win 3 games against a Leafs team, that's it, extension....geez....à

I guess we will revise this when we lose badly against the Jets? Is that it? Fine. Let's revisit this thread shall we?

Keeping Danault is playing not to lose. And not to win. People should wake up and realize that this team is going back to the conference next year. And if you think overusing Danault will make you even make the playoffs, you are deluded. Please note that we didn't make the playoffs with him before. We would not have made it last year. And with this year's conference, we would not have made it either. With the same Danault.

But...we win 3 games and that's it Danault, Danault for life....

And stop with Danault the stop gap. Danault is not the stop gap. Danault is the life jacket for any coach. You will ALWAYS go back to this to avoid being too wet. Always. You keep Danault, he'll still get top minutes next year. And the year after....

1. Exactly. What was the reason of Habs winning... Game 1 ... Paul Byron amazing goal
Game 5 they made a 3 goals comeback , Terrible turnover by Galchenyuk Suzuki and Caufield saves the day
Game 6 They made a 2 goals comeback , Price makes 16 saves in OT while Mr Danault lose all his f***ing faceoffs , KK save the day from Dermott turnover.
Game 7 Leafs no show , habs scored on PP and a gift from Campbell on Gallagher.
Was Danault a gamebreaker in this serie? Absolutely not. Could he stay as a real 3rd center at around 3.25m yes.

2. Exactly We are pinning the win against the leafs because of Danault somehow???? Hello he has 1 assist whos on an empty net in 7 games.
Is he the main reason of Matthews/Marner choked? no. Marner still had 4 points and Matthews 5 points and they were not empty nets.

3. I 100% agree with you that playing 17min of Danault a night is pray to survive and that somebody else score a goals.

Habs should play to win and not to defend an invisible lead. KK is going into his 4th nhl season next year. It's time for him to stay in the top 6 at long term.

Save money instead from Tatar Danault Armia and for once try to get 1-2 d-man who are actually good and pay them.

If we have a better d-squad that can move the puck our forwards will be way better.

I have been defending Danault from the start and will continue to do so : the Habs don't have a superstar center, they have two young good offensive centers, hence they need somebody to shutdown the top line on the opposite end. That is what Danault does, and he does it well.

That being saig, given the Habs contract situation, signing him to a contract worth more than 5m would be a mistake and you don't usually want to pay your 3C that amount of money, and I truly believe some team could overpay for his services as a UFA (typical Holland move in EDM). Now if people think MTL can run with Poehling Evans next year, this is fine but trashing Danault really seems unwarranted given the work he has put in and his defensive contribution. Let us put it like this, with Evans (or some other minimum league contract) Danault (5m) Lehkonen (2m), with 8m cap you can play a game where in 20 minutes you are at par or down one goal against 20m+ cap, this is what such a player is worth.

I'll... pass on commenting on his play because his biggest strenghts are not quantifiable

But, I absolutely don't get the "we need to keep one of tatar or danault crowd". Like you said, letting go of those guys frees up something like $8M??! Tatar is a no show in the playoffs anyway, so he's a no brainer to go. The next question is... would you rather acquire a $8M player or keep Danault?

I know that I'm comfortable with Evans in a 3C role, and then we're missing a 4C. W could find the solution internally (Poehling) or externally )cheap ufa ala thompson, maybe a faceoff specialist).

So, you got $8M to replace Tatar, or even do a crazy thing and sign a decent LD. It might come down to who's available though, but I like that perspective.

*Losing both Drouin and Tatar will create a hole at the LW, so it might be worth prioritizing over the LD if a better player is available

just my 2c

Yes but his secondary assist on an empty net is clearly not the reason.

That’s disingenuous to think you can only contribute offensively to win games. They asked him to play a specific role. Don’t let that top line score and the other guys will chip in.

I’m not in favour of giving him a big deal, but after Price, he was the most important player of that series.

he’s worth 4-4,5m$ long term . Stop bashing him

Mackinnon has already called danault one of the players that’s hardest to play against in the league

That's it. He's getting his 5.5 for 5 years. Shutting down lines, Evans not being a sure thing for the future.....we will go safe for sure. And we will regret it later. But hey.....it is what it is.

I’ve accepted that Danno is going to be resigned.

What I’m hoping for is not regarding AAV but rather term...does anyone think we can keep him on a 2-3 year deal?

Don’t know where to comment this, but given we need new contracts for KK, Suzuki, Evans, Romanov, Poehling and Caufield in the near future, I am having a hard time figuring out how we keep them all.

With fans likely to be in the stands next year and higher revenues due to a 32nd team, it won't be long before the cap goes back up.

Ideally I would like to get Danault locked up in the $4-4.5M range, but wouldn't care if we did give him around $5-5.5M as the cap will go up during his contract. I'd rather pay up for a guy who plays a key role as opposed to 3rd pairing D or 4th line forwards, plus Danault just turned 28 so he still has lots of hockey left in him.

If we let him walk, we'd also likely have to give up assets or spend to find a replacement top 9 C.

On the 31 thoughts podcast Elliotte Friedman says the cap could stay relatively flat for 5 years. There is a lot of escrow the players have to pay before the cap can really start going up.

I don't think you can sign him for less than 5 mil and he'll for sure get that on the market after his playoff performances.
Many teams will see him as a missing piece needed to win.
