Things aren't as bad as you make them seem to be, unless Danault wants 6M or more. At a Pageau-like 5M, keeping Danault, Tatar and Armia is actually feasible. Danault and Tatar rather easily and Armia if they can unload both Byron and Kulak.

Next season, the Habs are saving 2M off the buyout cost this year for Alzner. They are also saving 1.475M off the Allen price tag with his new contract (assuming it's not even more by him not being picked up at the expansion draft -- it could be 3.55M for at least one season if we move towards Primeau instead as a backup for Price). If Montreal manages to pawn off Byron to the Kracken (add a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick), it's another 3.4M. If Montreal finds a take for Kulak and replaces him with an 8th D at around 750K, it's another 1.05M. Replacing Weal and his 1.4M with a 750K 13th forward is an extra 650K.

How far towards keeping everyone does 8.575M get you?

Need to re-up Tatar from the current 4.8M that Montreal is on the hook for.
Need to re-up Danault from the 3.083M that Montreal is currently on the hook for.
Need to re-up Armia as an UFA from the 2.6M that Montreal is currently on the hook for.
Need to re-up Lehkonen from the 2.4M that Montreal is currently on the hook for.

Need to re-up Kotkaniemi on a bridge deal up from the .925M that Montreal is currently on the hook for without bonuses.
Need to factor in the 2,75M more for Gallagher.
Need to factor in the .75M more for Petry.
I would just like to point out that none of these moves NEED to happen and if we're being realistic, not all of them WILL happen.

1 if not 2 of these players are likely to be replaced by players on ELCs and those will offset the recent extensions handed out and likely salary increases coming for Suzuki & Kotkaniemi

Phil Danault sur-le-Lac, in the recent Habs Christmas video. Very cheesy as Runner pointed out.

Emphasis on "On va aller GLISSER!!" with barely any snow on the ground and the lake waters moving in the background, calmly. Well done Phil.

Quick trivia because people here tend to think ''yeah because he has a french name'':

1-How many francos did we had on the team in 1993 including black aces, our last cup atm..? And the cup before? And the other? Anybody? That's the Habs.

2-How many do we have now? Last year? The year before? ect. Now we're just a team in this league..

Danault will help for a long time and it would be a great mistake to trade him...

In 1993 there were 92 Quebec born players in NHL (on 24 teams) vs 55 in 2020 (on 31 teams).

Do the math.

The province of Quebec needs to generate more NHL players with he size and population of that province. Did the math a few years ago and 20% of the NHL comes from Ontario while only 7% from Quebec. That number should be around 10% - 15% IMO.

Hopefully Lafreniere changes the culture and more kids want to play hockey... A physical in your face style vs Drouin's style. Playing a gritty but skilled game is the issue IMO.

In 1993, 14 on the Habs plus or minus 1

Word is Marchessault is available.

Just saying Marc....

I personaly don't care what language he speaks. But man would he look good in Byron's place on KK's wing with Josh Anderson on the other wing. Or, with Suzuki would be dynamite, and move Drouin with Kk.

Playing a system game is the issue. In Quebec system >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> skills.

Skills but also with Grit is the issue I see. We see so many soft types that can't handle physical players when they reach pro level. I don't care how big you are... Be a skilled player that can handle physicality. Of course this don't apply to all of them cause there is Bergeron types.

Spin this to the Habs... imagine our practices when we had so many soft types. Soft against soft is not good cause maybe guys like Tatar, Drouin, Lehkonen, Byron do well in practice. Sure, if you are battling another soft guy yeah

exactly ! it's not normal that kid in novice are learning system and are not working on their skills
Makes total sense... it makes you good in the room. Marc Bergevin is already making a list of 7 year olds he can draft in 10 years (Yes, him and Timmens will still be with us in 10 years)

Suzuki and Kotkaniemi aren't sure fire offensive prospects such as players like an Eichel or Matthews, Suzuki can take a step back from last year and Kotkaniemi looked lost most of last year and despite looking better in the playoffs he only put up 4 points in 10 games. If they had a bigger sample size of playing well in the NHL then it would be time to take the training wheels off, but given how awful we have been at developing offensive centres I think they should be relied on more to improve offensively as they are both solid enough in their own end.

It wouldn't be like in the past where Julien relies on Nate Thompson playing 13 minutes a game to help defensively, Suzuki and KK would still get some tough matchups but would also get to focus on being point producers at ES and on the PP while Danault would be playing vs. the other top lines and playing big minutes on the PK.

If we ice Danault between 18 and 19 minutes we are going to miss the playoffs again. And if he plays against top line it's how much he'll play. He should be used like Carbonneau was. Ice him against top line once we take the lead. Play him less when the score is tied or we are trailing behind. He should not play more than 16 something.

I am getting a negative vibe fron Danno. Sounds like the moment he is not playing first line duties he will sulk and pout just like Domi did last year. Package him with Drouin and get some practice pucks and new water bottles.
A Montreal based team without any local french players; We can see what kind of human being you are to say publicly this shit .

It looks that way. MB is no hurry to negotiate, so clearly Danault's statements from last summer are reverberating.

I much prefer how he's answering questions about his contract now, he's leaving it to his agent.

Danault's line wasn't the problem last seasons, it was the 3 others. So that means that it's the others that need to do better
