Not sure if it has anything to do with the Flyers series really. Maybe Bergevin learned from his Desharnais days to not extend centers so quickly when your pipeline is giving you other solutions.
Danault obviously wants to keep having an offensive center role, but with Suzuki and KK slowly emerging, it might not make as much sense to play him on top 2 lines. So if Danauly is asking for ~5Mx6y...to play the third line...makes more sense to see how guys like Poeh and Evans can perform this year. They could be good options to center the 3rd line on a much cheaper deal.

It just makes sense to wait more before extending Phil.
5x6 for a third liner is still way too much

Kinda awkward that everyone knows his contract offer is depending on how good KK looks next season.

When asked if he'd be willing to leave some money on the table and offer a hometown discount. He said he sacrificed on his last deal and he doesn't feel he should this time and he doesn't expect the team to ask him to make one.

So we have one of the best goalie, one of the best 1st dman, one of the best 5v5 line yet we finished 24th. At some point there's a problem with the evaluation of our players.

So much this.

His contract not only depends on how he will do this year, but on where exactly he stands in the organisation in the long term. No matter how well he does this year, if he is outperformed by KK and Suzuki, then there is no point to pay that much money for a 3rd line center. And if he is outperformed by KK and Suzuki, his ice time will likely drop and his numbers will not look good.

This whole hometown discount is boggus, and is just a way to put pressure on the organisation by trying to show that they do not value local players. Right now, he has zero leverage. If things don't work out with the young centers this season, Bergevin can just sign him later for whatever he asks.

Is he for real? Contract values are depressed. He chose the wrong time to claim he shouldn't be leaving money on the table. He'll have no choice but to leave money on the table so long as revenues remain compromised league-wide.

The hometown discount thing doesn't even need to be broached -- it's the usual wet dream that most fans entertain about local players.

There is also no real first line. Roster construction is based on three 2nd lines, and maybe even two 2nd lines prior to this off season's moves.

The best goalie thing is overrated. No Stanley Cup winning team carries a $10.5 million goalie. It's a hindrance more than anything.

Don't think Weber is one of the best D-men. Not now, anyway. He's a shutdown D who is getting older, not typically ranked in the top 15. League has placed more value on PMDs -- Habs are not exactly replete with them at this time.

There are holes. Top pairing LD is still open. Offence in the off season was only bolstered by one of Anderson or Toffoli, when you consider that a 20-25 goal scorer was traded away in Domi.

I think there is a problem in the evaluation of management personnel. There probably is no such evaluation taking place. Molson is still directly overseeing hockey ops. It's not going to change until he vacates that role and appoints someone who is competent and provides him with meaningful authority.

Yes Philip, we know who you're becoming. You showed your colors at that exit interview from the playoff bubble.

Gélinas is a putz. Of course Danault is going to honor his contract. What else is he going to do in the middle
of a pandemic when league revenues are compromised and there might be no season? Idiotic statement. This is not the time for any stunts.

Danault confirms that negotiations have stalled.

Jeez Cowan, get your head out of Danault's arse. Was he a "class act" when he exited the playoff bubble? No kidding negotiations are stalled -- he wants to get paid like a first line/ top 6 center and expects to play with the team's better offensive players and wasn't afraid to issue an ultimatum to Bergevin, which was never retracted.

We have Claude Julien to thank for this state of affairs. Overplaying Danault as a top line center is what got us into the current contractual uncertainty. The guy might have accepted his role as a 3rd line C had he been used properly. Now, I hope someone else overpays him for his defensive play.

No one cares
Phil Danault do you think that you are Patrice Bergeron? You are not hard to replace especially in a league that is facing plenty of financial challenges over the next few seasons. It would be crazy to commit big dollars to you when there will most certainly be other options available for less than you feel you are worth.

I think this team is much better with Danault on it. Only question is at what price?

KK and Suzuki are still young and cheap for the next little while, especially if we bridge both or both of them. So if we signed Danault to a shorter term deal or one with limited NTC in it, I'd be fine with that as it'll allow KK and Suzuki to keep developing and not have to rush them with no safety net. What I wouldn't do is pay Danault north of $6M which he's obviously not worth. My thinking is that Bergevin is going to let Danault prove he's not a 1st line center by giving him all the rope he needs so he can make him a lower offer in the off-season when he fails. Worst case is Danault hits 70+ points and develops into a legit no. 1 center. No much harm either way by my estimation.

Danault's seemingly got a grudge about his current deal.

He should take that up with his agent.

He's on the map as a player because of the Montreal Canadiens.

They put him in a position where he will get the most lucrative contract of his life

These comments are very off putting.

Either he's not listening to his agent or his agent is incompetent.

Danault has not exactly handled himself well. Leave the negotiations and posturing to an agent and let it happen in private.

It sure seems Phil has gotten a little carried away with himself......
We have seen your ceiling Phil, the best wingers the habs have had for the last 2-3 seasons.....13 goals is tops, and he is a great two way centreman, he couldn't be more perfect for the 3C role... this should land him a 4.5M dollar deal max...give him the term and he can retire a hab...if not, see ya later...
Not impressed by his attitude right now...

Its obvious at this point that Phil is a terrific 3rd line center, nothing more.
Every true contender has a player like this on their 3rd line. The problem is Phil thinks he is top 6 and that's simply not the case. A player of Danault's skill set is worth 4 mil per season tops.
