Maton was always an intriguing prospect. More utility guy than regular, but who knows. Lack of power likely limits his ceiling but left handed hitting middle infielders with feel for contact give you plenty of floor.

Right now he has a 2% walk rate with a 30% K rate and a .430 BABIP. That is definitely not sustainable.

It's May 19th and the 5th no-hitter of the MLB season has just been thrown.

The MLB record for an entire season is 8(1884), but the 'modern record' is 7 (1990, 1991, 2012) looks poised to break even the old record if just 3 more are thrown over the next 4 & 1/2 months.

Current MLB batting average is .236... an all time low
Inconsistent strike zones, plus years of players not changing their swing one strike 2 (i.e. not choking up or just putting the ball in play) plus possibly a less-juiced baseball than last year. Higher strike-out rates, plus less balls in play, plus possibly less of a 'carrying baseball' for more fly-outs.

Still amazing to see this much of a difference just less than 2 months into a season where MLB is only *1* no-hitter away from the 'modern' record of 7 and *2* away from the record set in the 19th century.

I wonder how this year compares to others for strikeout rates? Seems like so many hitters are around 30%, which I guess is acceptable if they’re hitting for enough power, but that’s apparently down.

The pitchers are too good. A strikeout every 4 batters.

I heard Theo on a podcast recently. Basically saying the pitchers have perfected their craft and they arent thinking of lowering the mound as that could help them even more. They will implement a pitch clock though in the future, so no more human rain delays.
