AV knows him, so he's probably the reason for this move.
A 5th rd pick certainly isn't much of a price to pay, given we still have 9 picks.

Just don't want a 6x6 with a NTC clause screwing up the roster down the road.

Cant sign 8 years if you arent rostered before TDL. This is strictly a play to try to negotiate with him before anyone else can, and a fairly clear point that Winnipeg isnt interested in an 8 year deal, or signing him at all, since the pick isnt conditional.

Does this mean Patrick is available?

Flyers already had deep C talent pool

I think (I hope!?) the idea is that Patrick isn't quite there and Frost just finished junior, so a stopgap middle six C is needed for a year or two....but his deal with be longer than that I'm sure.
