Is bottom 6 still an accurate projection for Cates? Seems like he's trending a bit higher?

It’d be a pleasant surprise if he ended up being a top 6 forward. I’m just not convinced that that’s a realistic ceiling for him.

That's fair. I haven't watched him, so I'm not sure how to interpret his stats.

It’s tough for many, many NCAA forwards to produce well vs. teams in their own conference. 16PTS in 16GP overall & he’s 1st on his team in scoring among the forwards. 2nd overall on his team behind LHD Scott Perunovich.

- Good, not great hands
- high hockey IQ
- Great at going and getting the puck (forecheck, 50/50 battles, etc.)
- sound defensively (active stick, fully aware of his coverage responsibilities, separates players from the puck to force a change in possession)

We are really stacked at LW. Is there a good depth chart anywhere that shows our entire depth chart.

Cates is a middle six guy, lacks the talent to be a true top six, but too good to bury on the 4th line for very long.
As he fills out, he should be able to play a Lindblom like game, two way forward who does the dirty work but also can score.
Really impressed me in the WJC-20, his coach used him in every situation. Has "it," the vision to anticipate plays as they develop instead of just reacting.

If there's no room in the top 9 when he goes pro, I'd try him in a 4C role (yes, he's a LW in college, Giroux was a RW in juniors), because he has the high IQ that would let him be effective in AV's scheme.

What's your opinion of Wylie?
Depth player. Decent at everything. Great at nothing. Nice player to have in the system because he's RH, but not really a player I have any confidence carving out a regular NHL role here.

If he finishes the year around a PPG that would be quite the accomplishment on a non-powerhouse team even as one of the older players in the league.

Middle-six indicates 2nd-line potential, and I don't see that in Cates. A guy who can fill-in occasionally in an upper-lineup spot when there are injuries, yes. But I don't think he's a guy you ever want full-time on your top 2 lines.

I pretty much compare him to Raffl.

Raffl was a late bloomer who didn't break out until he was 24, putting up a PPG in Allsvenskan (not even the SHL) before coming to the NHL.
Raffl has always been a bottom six talent who gets by with good skating, solid defense and hard nosed play.

Cates had a solid performance in the USHL at 18, putting up 55 points in 60 games, following up with 23 points in 40 games for Minn-Duluth, 5th among forwards as a freshman (note the top scorer only had 33 points, M-D is not known for high powered offense). He had a solid showing at the WJC-20, playing in all situations.

This year Cates is 2nd on M-D in points, and the top scoring forward, with 16 points in 16 games.

The knock on Cates was that he was seen as primarily a defensive grinder, but his continued improvement has PNHLe now projecting him as a 2nd line prospect.

One reason for his rise is physical maturity, 2 years ago he was 6'1 165, now he's listed by EP as 6'2 190.

I think there's a good chance he goes pro after this season, he's already won a national championship with his brother, he's filling out, and has little more to prove at the college level. He should be a rapid promotion to the NHL from the AHL with his Hockey IQ and a man's body at 21 (22 in Feb) next season.

Boxscore of their last game. Twarynski or Bunnaman should be coming up to take Konecny's spot while he's out.

It's crazy the amount of high prospects we have, that have gotten hurt.

Morin, Patrick, Rubstov, Allison, Laberge, etc..
Unfortunately it’s really thinning out the pool. I don’t know how much of a future guys like Rubtsov and Allison have with their inability to stay healthy at lower levels, killing valuable development time. If Laczynski doesn’t sign, who is left for possible top 9 forwards in the system? Cates, Brink and Ratcliffe? Lycksell?

Major injuries of premium draftees costing at least half a season and putting a significant cloud on their career. Really unlucky.

Wouldn't write off JOB, while he's not lapping the BCHL, he's having a solid season, showing the development we wanted to see, even if a year late.
