Here on HFJets there has always been two criticisms of the Jets when it comes to how Petan was handled. There is the “But he only ever got to play with Thorburn!” angle and then there is the “His development was ruined because he should have been sent down to the A!” criticism.
Regarding the latter, I got sucked in the same as the Jets did. Maurice recently stated that the reason why some players get to stay with the Jets and learn their craft while others do not is because if a young player wants to stay on the Jets he needs to produce points while he is learning. Petan fooled us all by scoring in his first game. He went to the net and the puck hit him and went in. “What a future this kid will have! “
Thirteen games later after averaging ten minutes of ice time per game and zero points he came out of the line up and down to the Moose where he played 47 games. In my book that was an opportunity he was given and consistent with Maurice’s policy when production stopped he was given the opportunity to play games and develop with the Moose.
March 18th he came back in the lineup and on April Fools he scored again which kept him in the lineup for the rest of the year. The next season he got two points in his third game and one in his fourth and then the odd point here and there throughout the season which was just enough to keep him from being sent down for longer than 9 games.
Last year he spent 52 games playing with the Moose. I see no evidence of his development being mishandled by the Jets.
