To think that JR only had to give up a failing prospect and a 6th round pick for his 2nd pairing. That's how you make it work in a cap world (even in spite of a few less than desirable contracts on the books).

Speaking to what Kirk stated above me, barring some major step backward from these two, Marino and MP were had for bottom basement prices. We have a long way to go here to be sure, but if things continue along the current course the value JR extracted in such moves was phenomenal! Truly disgusting.

I have this weird feeling Sprong is going to surface in Washington in a year or two.

He’s honestly a perfect fit for that group in terms of what they like in their offensive forwards.

I think Sprong's a logical guy to replace Kovalchuk if they don't re-sign Kovalchuk. Sprong certainly won't displace Ovechkin, but I could see him taking Kovalchuk's spot on the 3rd line (with Hagelin and Eller) and 2nd powerplay.

I sure hope the Caps think like you. Sprong is trash.

I'm still not even sure why the Caps got Kovalchuk. Besides Carlson, their defense is very average at best. They really didn't need another forward.

Since 2012, pretty much. But that's fine and it works. It was not a criticism, just that Sprong would not have a role on a team that has the best player ever at doing the only thing Sprong could do.

This was actually covered in the same Athletic article as the Murray bad camp stuff. They like his shot from the point and his two way game.
