His contract isn't even nearly as bad as some claim it is

It's definitely not good, but it's well down the list of bad contracts for Detroit. Abdelkader is the compliance candidate. That dude scored a 7 year $30M deal by being Datsyuk's backboard.

I don't like Helm's contract at all, especially considering he's a china doll (As we found out again yesterday) but we have no incentive to get rid of it.

Next year we're likely looking at:

Larkin - $6.1M
Mantha - $3.3M
Athanasiou - $3.0M
Bertuzzi - $1.4M
Zadina - $925K
Rasmussen - $900K
Cholowski - $900K
Hronek - $700K

That's a third of our roster at about $17.5M. Svechnikov may also factor into that at $850K. Just don't need to clear cap space at all.

Yeah it's not good but it's not a nightmare contract like some thing it is, maybe 1.5 mil too much but he can still provide for the team unlike Abdelkader

Also unlike Helm, there is no real reason to get rid of his contract or even pay to have someone take it. If Detroit ever retained in him I bet we'd have more takers than some think.

Or maybe I'm just a Helm fanboy IDC
