What does that mean for the future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh?
I'm having a rough sports week as well with the Giants and the Rangers and who knows what else to come.
If a owner will have to kick in nearly $130-million of his own money for the arena ..... I doubt the selling price for the team even approaches $100-million.
According to sources close to the negotiations, Mr. Balsillie balked at a "side deal" that would have required him to agree, among other things, to allow the NHL to take over the hockey team if it was unhappy with arena negotiations, or if it became disenchanted with his ownership. The league also wanted to restrict the new owner from contemplating a move out of Pittsburgh under any circumstances until 2013 at the earliest.
By the way Hamilton would not get a team regardless. It doesn't make sense to put a team that close to Toronto and Buffalo.
What makes sense is putting a team where it will make money
League officials (and anyone with half a brain) know that a team in Southern Ontario would be an instant hit, and have admitted as much.
You obviously have no idea of the amount of hockey fans in Southern Ontario.
I do. I am just looking at from outside the bubble of that context and in the larger context of TV markets and other considerations.
A team in southern Ontario (located correctly) has access to the NHL's best TV market (Toronto).
If this news is made public or brought to light, do you think it's finally enough for owners to turn on Bettman and kick his *** out of office?
Yes.
So you follow a statement on $$$, with a conclusion that a team (another team ) would be "an instant hit"
I'm sure that residents of Hamilton would love to have a team, but that doesn't mean that it would make sense to the NHL, especially when it would be sandwitched between to bigger market teams.
Yep. This post demonstrates the confusion that some have. Toronto is the market there and it's taken.
Ask the Leafs organization how they would feel about their market share being cut.
That sounds like a mightly big "if" to be haning your hat on.

25M+ is a large sum of money to waste acquiring properties at the Pens preferred site to start demolition in a month on the Pens timetable.
In other words, the city/county aren't going to let that money go to waste by not getting an agreement done.
Shades of the Expos...Sorry, but it's looks bleak.
