LMAO stat of the night...
5 x 5 shots: Pens 29, Wings 18
With JJ on the ice: Wings 9, Pens 2

Boil it down and you have:

8-58 or
3-58
and
28-44

Figure out who plays with #4 out of #8/#3 since 73-4 is trending the wrong way.
Thats how it SHOULD be atleast.

Might not matter if Dumo can't go to start tho...

Weird stat of the day -- With the winning goal tonight, Kessel leads the entire NHL in game winning goals this season with 10.

Just kind of a strange stat given how much of a ghost Kessel has been most of this season.

Just goes to show you he's an important part of this current roster in terms of being mediocre to a potential contender.
These PO's will be the final answer to whether he should stay here vs needing to change it up to contend again.

I don't think that Kessel was ghost so long. He was great firt 40 games and than up and down. Ghost was final 20+ games. I think reason why people think like that is because they still see Kessel more like goalscorer than playmaker. He is much more playmaker in Pittsburgh than goalscorer ( finding passes more than shots on a net ) I think. Especially when he is on ice with Sid and/or Geno.

Thanks for the birthday present, Pens! Much appreciated.

Kessel, you sexy beast! I am so happy I was wrong about you. The return of the wicked wrister, indeed. Now, please keep it up and score even strength goals regularly against teams other than the Wings.

I have no idea how we didn't concede in the first ten or so minutes of the second period, we had so many turnovers and weak attempts to clear, Murray was great but the Wings missed the net so many times too.

I am happy that Crosby got closer to 100 but boy, he can be frustrating with his refusal to shoot from great positions lately.

Congrats to the Pens. It wasn't that long ago watching this team was a dark dark dark endeavor. 13 straight seasons shows how spoiled we've become with some of the best talent in the NHL and 2 generational players. I will never get tired of rooting for them in the post season. Kudos all around. +++++++ galore tonight for getting in
Are you talking about when the whole team was practically traded away?

Just to bring some levity to the Phil thing.
It's how his +/- is trending more so than production.
Or the bad mix that Geno-Phil have been.
With Bjugs now theres a chance he'll work things out with a better/healthier Geno or Bjugs but that +/- can't be what it is for him and G for this team to contend.

Forget the injuries. Caps beat us along the walls at both ends and they clogged up the NZ in transition last season. That's how they won.

Bjugstad and Gudbranson with healthy top-end players gives us the upper hand if Sully plays his cards right.

And we would all be dumb to forget that Sidney Crosby is chasing some top-5 playoff-scoring-history right now with a decent run. He's going to be motivated.

This is my thing now with Crosby. He has a chance to really put himself in some rarified air that won't be able to be "dismissed" years from now, like some of his regular season numbers will likely be, not taking into account his injuries.

Making the playoffs gives him the chance. 5 guys with 200 playoff points. I know not everybody in history got to play as many games, but still. That is some seriously impressive work.

Normally I think the comments on here about Josh Yohe's criticism of Murray are a little over the top, but in his article on last night's game, he talked briefly about the adversity the Penguins have had to overcome and Murray was the only player he called out for poor play during the season. That's, um, f***ing ridiculous.

There's 18 skaters. They can all score if their buddy doesn't.

Who stops goals if the goalie doesn't?

It isn't a fair position. It will never be judged fair.

That's fine for a casual fan, but I expect a sports journalist to cover the team more objectively than that.

Oh. There's the problem. It'd be like believing Millbury on what a good hockey hit/play is or a trade rumor from Kypreos.

As long as the Pens...all of them...keep doing their best they can be the best.

Right or wrong, goalie is the most impactful and scrutinized position next to starting QB..he was bad earlier in the year but he's been great lately and frankly, our D has been trending down the last couple weeks and he's been saving our bacon...we wouldn't have won last night if not for him because we gave up a lot of quality chances to DET...

To be fair, Murray didn't score a single goal all season.

I think the systemic analysis of last season vs Washington is overdone. Kessel, Malkin, Dumoulin and Hagelin were all hurt and Murray was bad all year. I still maintain that it was the worst Caps team in the 3 years.

There was also Letang doing whatever it was he was doing. But the entire series still could have gone differently if Malkin hadn't slewfooted a guy onto his own leg.

The Caps shouldn't be a problem for us if we're healthy. With Geno, Letang, and Dumo's situations, that's TBD.

Yeah, JJ and Gudbranson are picking an awful time to come back down to Earth. Schultz is also picking an awful time to do whatever it is that he's been doing for a while.

The competitive advantage for the Caps last year was their bottom six, especially their 4th line. They were wrecking balls, playing in the offensive zone most of the time, and contributing on the scoresheet. This year, at least in the regular season, they don't have the same advantage with the bottom six. We're back to the top 6 heavy + excellent PP Caps again. Kuznetsov played awesome for them last year. The guy I'm mostly concerned about when we play them is Vrana. His speed f***ing kills us. Also, Wilson if he injures half the team and doesn't have shit called on him.

It's a toss up matchup. It's really going to come down to whoever's goaltender plays better IMO. The Caps don't scare me.

If dominant Kuznetsov shows up, they'll be a problem. But from what I've heard he's been spotty this year.

What I will say is I'm extremely confident in Murray v. Holtby as the goalie matchup.

Their competitive advantage was losing Wilson, having an actual Kuznetsov and the fact our team visually was not hungry and broken down after playing two cup runs.

Healthy Brassard or Malkin and we likely win that series. As we almost did.
