There was that hit he delivered to Gazdic that was essentially the same thing, only Gazdic hurt his neck on the collision. It was shoulder to shoulder, but it was unexpected and was a far more egregious suicide pass than what Fefe gave to Laine.

I don't see that as nearly the same thing. Maybe I'm forgetting something? That hit wasn't open ice it was near the boards. May heave been the same speed but Buff led with the shoulder didn't he?

This hit is much more predatory than the McCabe hit

I usually have no issues with Byfuglien destroying people because hockey is a physical sport. Let's call dirty hits dirty and clean hits clean though.

It has nothing to do with head trauma. The head contact was incidental, and **** happens. McCabe was going in for an open ice hit and Laine lifted his head at the last second and got the full brunt of it.

I don't see how you're going to remove hits like this from the game without removing hitting altogether. It's not like headbutting is a chronic problem in this league.

I'm not advocating eliminating body checking. There has to be a safer middle ground between letting the guy skate past you, and full-on destruction. Other people have pointed out how McCabe could have hit Laine in a safer manner. He chose not to, because he knew he didn't have to. Like it or not, the shift has already started. Driving someone head first into the boards is now taken very seriously, and sooner or later, so will open ice hits like this.

I agree, it's a dirty hit. I'm all for any rule changes that gets Buff out of the league. ;)

I can't believe people are still saying it was a headbutt.

There's a difference between a headbutt (intentional) and head-to-head contact (unintentional). It was a clean hit. Face it already.

In terms of dangerous hits near the boards the line is easier to draw, but aside from leading more from his shoulder I'm not sure what more could be done to make that type of hit safer. McCabe barely had any momentum of his own. The only reason the hit was as bad as it was is due to the contact between their heads. McCabe connected with his whole body.

The shift to taking out dangerous predatory hits is a good one, but I do not see how this is connected to that. The collision was straight on, body to body. McCabe's technique could have been better but I don't think he had an intent to injure Laine. If he did, headbutting would be a pretty bold move considering it could have gone both ways.

He walks around with the guy, the guy has big smile. Ergo.

#inmauricewetrust

If he had walked around grinning like an idiot 100% of the time, I'd be more worried about the state of Patu's brain. :propeller

Edit: And now I can't get the image out of my head of Laine walking into the doctors office wearing a banana suit and insisting to the doctor that his brain is just fine.

......or maybe this play happened in a blink of an eye and McCabe didn't have enough time to protect himself? [mod]

Anyone else notice a few huge hits on Enstrom at the start of the game? It seemed like big hits were part of the game plan for Buffalo.

These types of hits could happen all the time, especially behind the net. You see guys avoid this type of contact every single game. It's really up the to individual player to decide if they are going to hurt the opposing player.

I hope Laine is ok and he is back soon.

Everyone knew that the Sabres would play a physical game, and they did.

I thought the Jets basically rag-dolled them - skating circles around them until about 5 minutes left in the 2nd. The main problem was the Jets' lack of discipline defensively, and a softie or two by Hellebuyck.

Legal and clean are two different things. Did you feel good about the Buff hit on Stone? It was completely "clean" too. These hits get lots of oooohs and aaaahs and bring the crowd to their feet, but the only purpose is to hurt people. We see the direction that sports is going and 20-30 years down the road these hits will need to be gone or hockey and football won't exist any more.

This downfall of sports could happen even if they change rules and try to make them safer, kids nowadays have so many distractions and there favorite sport is texting.

I would argue that legal and clean are exactly the same thing. You don't get arrested or go to jail just for being a jerk if you aren't doing anything illegal.

It's a dangerous game because people get hurt. Every player who puts on skates knows that and they accept it. I believe McCabe intended to rock Laine and if he got hurt, he got hurt. C'est la vie. It's part of the game. It happens.

I'm fine with Buff's hit on Stone and I'm fine with the hit on Laine because they were both legal, clean hits. If you want to take the position that these hits shouldn't be in the game, then that's fine, but don't take this hit and turn it into something dirty when, by the rules of the game, it wasn't.

I completely understand that these types of hits may not be in the game in the future, and I'm fine with that too, because I would rather not see these players get concussions. Look at all of the Scott Stevens' hits that would be illegal in today's game. The game is always changing.

Knowing his ambition and love for the game, he wouldn't act that way If he had symptoms indicating a long term injury. So far so good, it sounds.

I don't think Macabe's hit was dirty. It was horrible technique with perfect timing. He could have easily concussed himself with the awful position he was in.
