Why don’t we simply not sign them to bad contracts?
Great idea ..

However when you start with a bad contract, and you have been given a directive from above to re-sign the players and keep them, then there can only be one outcome.

As we say in the IT world ... Garbage In = Garbage Out.

2 wrongs never make a right, but Leafs are about to double down on the signing mistakes of the past to create new ones sadly, unless you believe these core players are taking paycuts. :)

Even though his connection to the former GM is gone Chris Johnston seems to claim to be in the loop.. Here is his latest thoughts on Nylander.

8 years for under $9M for Willy is a bargain.

And here I thought it was our team make up and no shows from our top paid players...good to know that all our issues have nothing to do with the actual team.....phew...:sarcasm:

Re Tavares....he is a whole lot of meh for me. Puts in an honest effort I will give him that but he is very much the same as our other top paid guys in that he is soft, doesnt stick up for himself or his team. He has become a pp specialist which is something but certainly not worth 11 milly which isnt a surprise because most thought he would fade as his contract when on. It is what it is at this point. Dont hate the guy but dont think he is leading this team anywhere good..
Yep - don't hate JT, just the contract.

I agree. I think that it will be difficult to trade Marner without retention, Matthews is staying (we have no star centers in the pipeline), and Tavares will be near impossible to move. Who else can you get a solid return for? It has to be WN.
The corollary to that is that Willy's the one most worth keeping (apart from Matty).

Tavares is in a situation of "Don't hate the player hate the game."

His signing was a bad idea, and his contract is bad in a Salary Cap World, but Johnny himself is a nice guy, dedicated and hard working and simply declining now with time as all players eventually do.

If he was making $8-8.5 mil now the contract wouldn't have the same impact is does at $11 mil.

Continuing to pay draft capital for little playoff success is not a wise move IMO. These guys need to get it done. The cupboard is virtually bare.

Here is a secret so don't tell anyone.. :wg:

Good teams are built through the draft. as strong drafting and developing the cornerstone to have young cheap ELC players performing at high levels to offset the higher contracts of your stars to be Cup competitive.

Teams that want to have high priced stars should be protecting their draft picks like gold and investing as much money as ownership will allow in scouting and player development because the salary cap applies only to players and not management of them.

Willy will ask for 10m and the Leafs will not give in this time, well hopefully not.
It should make him an interesting deadline decision.

Whoever does give him his 10m in FA he will sign and will not give a rats ass if they are top 5 or bottom 5 team.

Apple does not fall far from the tree, daddy went FA often and was strictly a mercenary gone to the highest bidder.

He got full term for max value

Marner + Matthews got reduced term for max(likely over max value).

Same with Nylander when he signed

Getting 8 year term is big in the signing. He will be there for their full contention window and they dont have to give another deal to him as after this deal Devils likely looking to rebuild (9 years from now)

It’s a good deal, I’m just saying I don’t see the idea that he gave a discount. He took his market value imo

Teams that have prime aged high priced stars are more often than not trading picks to improve their roster while their contention window is open. I don’t disagree with the sentiment of protecting your draft capital, but there’s nothing unique about how the Leafs have used theirs over the past few years

Shouldn’t he be working out?
Obviously doesn’t care about losing.

LOL, Swedish machine does not need to work out... how dare he not mope around like a little bitc# and have a life. I get you are saying it in jest but some fans think that if you are not working out like Rocky Ballboia like you are in some sort of redemption montage video you don't care. Best thing these guys can do is mentally flush the season and enjoy life.

When mid August rolls around, start your heavy program, so by the time training camp hits you are ready to go. Most athletes do some sort of maintenance program through the summer (most of us call it intense work outs, but they are just keeping the blood flowing) and then hit it hard a few weeks before training camp, body needs time to rest and repair.

Try to compare it with Bruins.

While they wasted a pick for rentals, they are usually aiming for players they can re-sign to reasonable contracts.

They traded picks for Taylor Hall, Pavel Zacha, Hampus Lindholm, they even signed Foligno without giving up picks.

Lots of news and chatter online about matthews, keefe, treliving and hell even samsonov.

nothing about willy in terms of numbers. anybody hear or see anything yet? his agent is a pos to deal with from what i recall, but gaudreau has the same agent and his deal with cbj can be stomached as he was "the guy" for the flames to produce.

nylander does get more help in offensive production so to speak playing behind matthews-marner hopefully that factors in the negotiations.

oh and one more thing; FU Keefe for not putting Willy on PP#1 against panthers, you SUCK

It might be wise to extend Willie. give him 8 years at whatever.

If Matthew signs for. I don't know, 14 mil. and Marner out points him again next year. Marner's gonna want 14 mil. on his next deal.

We've re-signed Muzzin, Gio and acquired McCabe with term. Personally im pretty happy we avoided the Foligno re-signing. You could throw Clifford and Campbell in there for more than just a single playoff too.

True, and no disrespect to McCabe, but Bruins for their picks recouped 1st overall pick in Hall and 6th overall in Zacha.

Neither is as old as Gio.

Im not too fussed with where they were picked, but I do think the B's have added better quality players in that way. Interesting how few were grit moves and it seems like some of our mistakes were driven from that

Doesn’t change the facts though there’s still too much money in three players that aren’t producing at the clip their paid to
