Why on earth would we have kept Pageau?

That's like keeping a thoroughbred race horse to work on a farm instead of selling him for a nice sum to someone who will race him at the Kentucky Derby.

Well, first off, i think calling Pageau a thoroughbred off to race at the Kentucky derby is a bit hyperbolic. We didn't trade Chabot or Tkachuk, he isn't Stone or Karlsson, he is a middle 6 center.

Its looking more and more like the return will be in the 28 to 31 range, so a nice sum might be a touch exageratted as well (particularly when juxtaposed with your thoroughbred analogy). A pick in the range we will likely get has around a 30% chance of becoming a decent player or better.

Now there is certainly something to be said for getting moving on before the player starts to decline particulary now that he has a fairly big contract with some term, and maximizing value on what appears to be a career year, but as a young developing team, there is value to having a player like Pageau who can insulate the rookies, teach them how to be good pros and is young enough that we might have gotten a couple more good years once we were ready to contend before he declined. Basically it boils down to over paying a rotating cast of veterans at the end of their career like Hainsey or Anisimov, at 3.5m or 4.5 mil cap hits respectively, to act as that veteran leadership, or keeping around a more useful player at a bit of a premium.

Admittedly, i was for trading Pageau, and still am happy with the decision (sucks that the nyi look like they will make the conference finals and significantly decrease the value of the return though) but there is/was clearly valid reasons why keeping him could have been preferable.

My analogy has more to do with the fact that Pageau is the perfect elite 3rd line player on a contending team. Keeping him in Ottawa would be using him in a role that he isn't destined for. Aces in their places.

Also, guys like Tierney and Brown can fill those leadership roles. They're both 26, Pageau is 27. Tierney has more GP under his belt than Pageau (only 1), and Brown is just 12GP behind. Just because Pageau had some legendary playoff performances doesn't mean he's a better teacher than those two are. Heck, Tierney is already training with Byfield as we speak:
The Sudbury Wolves phenom cited Connor McDavid, Darnell Nurse and Chris Tierney as players he works out with regularly, with the Tierney name drop being quite interesting. When posed a question about how Tierney has spoken of Ottawa, Byfield answered as best he could:
“We haven’t talked too much about that but when we do he said it’s a really good place, it’s a good place to be, I think he really likes it there and great teammates, it’s a young team, they’re on the up and coming for sure. He says it’s somewhere you would want to be in the future”
While I’m sure it’s not usual conversation that Byfield and Tierney discuss between each other, it’s nice to see that they’ve acknowledged the possibility and Tierney had great things to say about Ottawa. It’s comforting to know that if Byfield ends up becoming a Senator that he will have some familiarity in the locker room.

I wouldn't call Butch Goring an unheralded role player; he was a consistent 30+ goal, 70+point player in his prime for several years.

"Unheralded role player" might be slightly exaggerated but if you want to get technical, 70-80 points in today's NHL seems elite, but when you are talking about a player with those numbers in the 70's, then it is definitely "middle of the pack" numbers and nothing to brag about.

For example, his best season statistically in 78-79, he had 87 points, but that only ranked him 13th overall. And that was his best season keep in mind, averaging 60-70 points during that era ranked players further down in the 20-30 range.

Yes I always get in trouble waxing nostalgic about those old islanders teams. I was a big fan of Denis Potvin especially but also Bossy, Trottier and Gillies and when Goring came over in trade he was after the fact held up as one of those great trade deadline deals, perhaps one of the best in decades, that wasn’t one of those big name, top line UFA’s most think of when voting on the best trade deadline deals.. Goring wasn’t one of the 100 pt getting stars on the team but he was more than just a 3rd liner and a more prolific point getter than Pageau. But something about the two remind me of each other in terms of key trade deadline pickups that didn’t seem so at the time. Both are playing key roles though not top line roles. And both surprised Isles fans a bit in how impactful they’d be. And im a fan of both.

I hope the players we end up picking at the Isle's picks do the trade justice

Likely won't.

We need to look at the deal as a financial one with the hopes that the money we saved on Pageau is used for Tkachuk.

Then it's a win for us.

The player we get at 28 is simply a bonus.

I think there is a good chance we get a very good 3rd liner or better at 28 this particular year.

For sure and I agree with that. But looking at the deal only as Pageau vs 28 we lose the deal.

The fiancial aspect is where it helps even out the deal on our side.

I hope one of White or Pinto becomes akin to what Pageau has been for this team (on ice at least). Khushnutdinov is the pick at the NYI range who I see as a legimitate 2-way threat at centre, with a higher potential if all pans out.

Hopefully Pinto can, I doubt White has any plans to throw a body check.

Since when was a lack physicality a criticism for White?
I'm not really sure what to say … He avoids contract like a plague and has less than 0.5 hits a game. He is weak on draws and the furthest thing from a dzone specialist. Maybe he changes his game but the idea that White we have seen could play a #C style of game like Pager is a fallacy. Chaplik has more potential as that type of player. DJ really limited his dzone starts last year.
