That's an overly simplistic and silly view of drafting.

There's definitely some strategy involved as far as getting the most value for your picks. If there's a guy the team likes expected to go in round 3 it's probably not a good idea to pull the trigger in round 1. In that case you aren't getting good value.


But in the case of a guy like Stone I do agree that if the team had any inkling he could turn out like he has they would have probably done it in round 5.

No ... it is a simplistic view of drafting. Calling it silly is a mistake in itself. Those late first round picks (and every pick) have tonnes of data behind them to support their predictive success.

The pick will land where it does (just like our 2 picks on top-5 still didn't guarantee a 1st or even 2nd). There are many good picks with pick 13 to 40 (i.e. the fourth tier). I am happy to see Pageau just Pageauing around as he always does in the playoffs. Meanwhile..

They likely dont move at all now the picks value isnt much more than a 2nd any longer.
