Ovechkin takes home 6.33M a year for 6 years. (or 48M/6 years)

He is owed 30M on his current contract. He signs an extension for 3 additional years and for 18M which would be a 6M AAV. I would call market value for him, but the money is paid over 6 years resulting in a 3M AAV. Ovie wants to win a Stanley Cup and this will save his team 3.7M in Cap Space to bring in other pieces to make that happen.

How the trade looks:

w/ Arizona
Ovie Resigned @3m for 6 years
for
Orpik
1st 2018
2rd(3rd?) 2020 or prospect

w/ Philly

Ovie Resigned @3m for 6 years
Brian Elliott
for
Brandon Holtby

(or Elliott and Linblom for Holtby)

I don't think that the league could reject this since technically the Capitals did not resign him.

Opens Potential Signings (for example):
- Ian Cole, Michael Grabner, Derek Ryan
** I think all of these guys would fit with this team and make them a deeper, faster, and better team.

Additionally
- Trade Holtby (if it hasn't worked don't stick with it- he has a lot of value) bring back a young prospect (favored by Flyers fans) and Brian Elliot a solid vet that can eat minutes. I don't think you will find a single Flyers fan who can't live with this trade ... They are finally getting an elite goalie. Capitals also have several promising goalie prospects.
- Pay a premium (picks) and get rid of Orpik with one year left on his 5.5M contract.

At the trade deadline add a D-man. If a forward is hurt or need depth or something then there is room to add.

I don't see why either of these teams would not do it... Also pretty sure the league can't technically say no.

Here’s my question.

If Arizona or Philly gets to sign arguably one of the greatest scorers to ever play the game at 3 million a year, why in God’s name are they trading Ovi back to Washington for anything less than a king’s ransom?

Not to mention that open market Ovi is getting 10x6 without breaking a sweat.

No one wants Orpik. Holtby isn’t getting it done.

If the Oilers for example got the chance to sign Ovechkin at a 3 million dollar cap hit, you’re never getting him back. Never ever.

No, you cannot trade for a player that you bought out for a year.
The rule book says you can't sign a player. But I don't see where it says you can't trade for... please direct me.

@ChaoticOrange Ovie only want's to play in DC. If it's not DC he is going back to Russia (and let me reiterate he want's to stay in the NHL - IN DC). Arizona and Philly aren't going to keep him because Ovie doesn't want to be there and would have no shot at resigning without the trade and they both benefit greatly for being the middleman.

Wow, that was a lot of work you put into that post. A lot of crazy, too. Also, I'm pretty sure that you have to wait a year before you're allowed to re-acquire a player you bought out.

....

I'd rather just keep Ovechkin.
Then he Kovalchuk's you and you now have the fate of the 2013 Devils. Good luck resigning Ghost, Prov, TS.

Your team once these guys are getting bridge deals/longterm contracts will be putting the Flyers up against the cap. You're not going to be able to get under the cap to start the season.

Did you miss the part where his salary would be 3 million dollars?

Barely holding us hostage.
zing

and the caps arent buying him out

no one is signing him just to trade him immediately

no one is signing Ovie to a 3mil a year contract and then trading him

no sir the princess is not in this castle

i stopped reading after the first line when you said you even tho you're a pens fan, you hope to see him win one cup....

I love nothing more than watching him lose every year in the 2nd round.

We can't win it every year and I can't even watch the cup final this year so let him go for it this one time. Pens will be better next year, but trading Ian Cole ruined us. We can still destroy the flyers because they are a bunch of dusters but we can't beat Nashville.
