Key matchup Dion Phaneuf vs. William Nylander.
The young Leafs forward likely will see plenty of the veteran ex-Leaf defenceman. Nylander is searching for his first NHL goal after going scoreless in his first three games. Phaneuf received rave reviews for his play in Ottawa, with coach Dave Cameron recently crediting Phaneuf with making the Senators blueline corps better in terms of confidence and overall play. Nylander, though, is a gifted skater and could take advantage of the slower Phaneuf to find the net for his first NHL goal.
No giving up: The Sens are at it again, mirroring last year’s sensational finish to the season, where the team produced many dramatic comebacks and third-period rallies. Ottawa tried again Thursday night but Bolts goalie Ben Bishop was stellar in guiding Tampa to a 4-1 win in Ottawa. The Senators, though, did stage successful third-period rallies in their previous two games, winning one of them, against St. Louis, but losing to Calgary in the shootout.
Long-shots: The comebacks make for great drama, but the Sens are falling behind due to sloppy defensive play and slow starts. They are 7-19-4 in games where they are trailing after one period. Ottawa remains a distant playoff hopeful, with four teams and seven points to make up to reach a wild-card berth.
Notes: Defenceman Mark Borowiecki left Thursday’s game with a knee injury … Veteran forward Scott Gomez, picked up for the stretch run, made a lacklustre debut for Ottawa Thursday. Playing for his seventh NHL team, he was a minus-1 and made a turnover that led to a goal. Gomez has 14 goals in his last 202 NHL games . . . D Marc Methot scored Ottawa’s lone goal Thursday, his first goal in 32 games.
Up next: Monday, vs. Buffalo, 7:30 pm, TSN4.
