Douchebag Goalies
- Damian Rhodes
- Tom Barrasso
- Dom Hasket

Nice Guy Goalies
- Ron Tugnutt
- Patrick Lalime
- Joey D'Accord

Andy kinda swung from being a bit of a dbag (at least how he came across for a bit) to being a helluva dude.

Cmooooon we gotta read way to much in to these comments and create a goalie controversy like the Tugnutt and Rhodes days! We have the right jerseys for it.

Controversies in a position where there's only 1 job are very easy to create.... That's the difference vs forwards/Dmen. Even during the Anderson days, there was a lot of debate some seasons when another goalie had a good stretch

Anyway, personally, I hope we have a Murray/Daccord duo next season which could be pretty strong if we improve the D squad and "team defense". Maybe we will need a new GM and/or coaching staff to do that I don't know yet.

Much improved team defense and figuring out how to play on the road : I'll be pretty confident in a Murray/Daccord duo. Everytime we provided NHL level defense, our goalies have been pretty good.

Why?

I'll gladly take what we did tonight over what the Sabres did tonight (they only had 3 shots on goal at the half way point of that game).
Yeah logically. But it’s frustrating when the game is there to be had and brain farts cost us

Not all that bothered about the result.

I don't actually want to catch Vancouver so outplaying them, scoring late and losing like that is no big deal.

Stutzle is the best faceoff specialist on the team. Won all three faceoffs he took last night. I do not understand the idiocy behind it, not to develop him as a center.

I'm pretty sure it is still the plan.

As good as Stutzle is, he loses most of his one-on-one battles still because of his current frame and strength.

Hopefully he doesn't overdo it with the strength training in the offseason as some have in the past and end up too slow as a result.

No doubt - but the D is still horrendous. Everyone plays a bit worse when they realize they won't get a breakout for shit and they'll likely have to provide layers of support in their own side of the the red line just to move the puck up ice.

People remember 08/09 Senators? All those two way forwards and defensively responsible players but we couldn't do anything cause our D breakouts were horrendous.

Also, to your point, the last few games the defensive system and system at large is completely falling apart. D.J has to be held accountable. We are seeing some terrible systematic blunders.

On another note, is anyone else as furious as I am the amount of times we hard ring the puck around the boards in the offensive zone and totally lose position when half the time the other Senator is only a few feet away and it completely blows by him? Wtf.

This is the time when they are young & the yr when the team sucks to teach the young forwards to get back on D & not cheat or cherry pick. The defence sucks, we all know that, which is even a bigger reason for the forwards to get back & help. They played a good game last night & were in it to the last until that crappy line change in OV & they had a hot goalie.

Daccord played well again & kept the team in it & gave them a chance to win it. Reilly should be gone in a few weeks if they can find someone to take him, maybe Gudbranson too & while Wolanin has looked better lately some of these other defencemen are not much better. We could be left with Coburn & J. Brown who still has another yr left on his contract.

I agree with that pass around the boards or how often they have the puck on their stick & they give it away especially in the D-Zone, it's a mystery why they can't make the safe play & seem to always try some fancy play that seldom works out. And kill that double drop pass.

Look, it is the coach's job to teach him NHL forecheck. I am not saying, the kid is reading this forum, When I posted an exposé on his forechecking deficiencies, but he changed it suddenly for better last game. Tim is decent along the boards and the best player to teach him a better positioning along the boards is Zub. Always turn your back to opposing player when you have a shot at a puck possession. Practice pivots with a puck along the boards, throw puck in the opening area ahead form you and skate there to create an opening and split defense. Use short pass to receive one back to be better positioned and split defense again. Nothing is practiced like this by DJ Smith. He still thinks he is in CHL. NHL coaches now teach offence and not only defense. DJ Smith does neither.

Not sure how much any head coaches in the NHL spends on individual skills teaching/coaching. I would think very little.
Individual skills are usually handled by other members of the coaching/development staff.

The break out is just awful. I think its a lack of poise with the puck, but that comes from a lack of knowing what the hell is going on. Why is the far side singer up at the red line standing still. No puck support underneath.
ARRRGGHHH!!

I actually liked Wolanin's breakout's yesterday. Showed great speed coming out of the zone, passing needs a bit of work, but overall he was doing a great job.

Really good effort by the team last night. Can't really complain about the battle the players showed.

But why in the shit is DJ trying to kill our cornerstone defenseman in a nothing season? He did it for a while last year too. It's brutal and asking for injuries and bad habits to become the norm for our $64M investment.

Lay the f*** off and let Reilly, Wolanin, Brannstrom, whoEVER play a little.

There is literally nothing wrong with the quote.

I don't know that much about Ottawa's media but here a quote like that would be fueling an already existing controversy.

31 mins for a #1 D on a team that is 10 games under 0.500 in a shortened season (24 games left). Yeah, ridiculous like so many things have been this season.

Wolanin already looks like he could be the 3rd best D on this squad pretty soon. He was obviously very rusty after not playing much hockey in 2 years.

It’s no secret we need some competent D.

24 games left, would need to finish 17-7 just to reach 0.500

Let's take the opportunity to ride Brannstrom and Wolanin EVERY game.

The point should be (and should have been since day 1) to prepare the team for next season. This delusional "effort to be competitive" (bring in Stepan, Gudbranson, etc) made us worse in the end and can already be costing us for next season.

Wolanin had a couple iffy moments in the game last night. Reilly had some as well, and iffier if you ask me... I've liked Wolanin for the most part.. He's been pushed around in the crease 2 games in a row.. He needs to try to improve his leverage in there. He can pass the puck.. no doubt there . Brannstrom does not improve on Wolanin both should be playing. Its nice the Sens are giving Wolanin a chance but sitting him out for 10 games was just dumb .. Even playing 3 out of those 10 would have been an indication the team gave a crap about him. Both he and Brannstrom need the reps to see if they can build on their strengths and they can out weigh their weaknesses. Brannstrom has had 63% ozone starts compared to Wolanin's more equal distribution of 52% as well. Both of them would want to beat out Reilly, who makes some of the most bone head plays now and then, He also makes some good plays. He is more capable physically than either Wolanin or Brannstrom and for some god forsaken reason .. the best CF% and CF% Rel numbers for D men on this team despite < 45% ozone starts. Brannstrom the highest touted amoung them certainly has not broken down the door to claim the spot and has not had the same kind of impact coming in as some of our young forwards. Both Wolanin and Brannstrom have the pleasure of being paired with Gudbranson most of the time. I wonder if they were really sheltered like Mete was playing with Weber .. how much of a difference it would make to either of them.

Love Chabot taking ownership for the OT goal (his fault or not), I think it shows great leadership.

Also who said we don't get good sounds bites anymore ... did you hear him talk about Austin Watson blocking shots ... working his balls (or should have said bag) off every night ?

I LOVE these kids personalities and they have skills, plus we have many more good prospects on the way (too many to list) I just hope they develop and coach them properly and keep the core together for years to come and we have a winner !! Go Sens Go

P.S: Euge please don't cheap out @ please remember FYOUS

2008-09's breakout issues were a coaching failure, not a personnel issue. Hartsburg clearly told the defensemen to ring the puck along the boards to clear, instead of make breakout passes through the middle of the ice. In Sweden, Pittsburgh figured that strategy by the 2nd game of the season. Hartburg's breakout was so bad that people questioned whether a forechecker like Chris Neil's career was over at 29yo. Then Clouston took over, fixed the breakout, offense and forechecking returned.

This edition of the Senators doesn't have anywhere near that level of systemic coaching incompetence. There's inexperience, lack of strength, mental lapses, no attention to detail, etc all over the roster. There are probably a dozen issues I have with the way they've played. A handful of those issues have been corrected throughout this season, while others are clearly a work in progress.

I imagine Reilly and Gudbranson are gone by the deadline (if someone wants them; I don't think anyone will want Coburn), so there's room for both of them.

Mendes talked a bit about the Sens D on 1200 today. I think he has an article coming out on some of those decisions coming.
He did mention losing Demelo for a 3rd then going out and getting Brown and Gudbranson for a 4th and a 5th ... obvious downgrades. Heck Hainsey is a fair bit better than these guys imo... Reilly , although not as good perhaps could be this year's Demelo .. Ship him off get a what 4th? And assuming they move on from Wolanin , that leaves you with Chabot and Brannstrom .. Any bets on the quality of D Dorion brings in to fill in and lead the troops
