They gave him almost identical money to Ryan. Weird that they chose to have Karlsson, Duchene and Stone all UFAs the same year. Only advantage is they can now trade him
I don't think this was done by choice. In a regular world Karlsson and Stone would be signed to long-term deals and they'd be trying to convince Duchene to stay as well.

Instead they are now looking at trading everyone.

They were better off letting him go to arbitration, at least that way they could have chosen 2 years and still probably have gotten rewarded the same contract that they gave. At least that way they could get an extra year of contract.

I sincerely doubt they have much power over the Stone and EK situations. Players are in the driver's seat there from the start.

If you're one year away from UFA, arbitration only awards one year contracts.

He's gone.

Ottawa will be lucky to be able to re-sign Duchene at this point.

Hopefully for the Sens Dorion is able to convert these guys into 1st round picks.

Stone can now be signed to an extension at any time, rather than having to wait until January 1st. Plus arbitration’s are never good for a player-team relationship.

Nevertheless, interested to hear how the very large anti-Sens crowd spins this as a bad move.
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I have absolutely nothing against the Sens or their fans....but how can anyone spin anything they've done into positives?

Damn, what is going on in Ottawa.

Never seen a team implode this quickly, from being one shot away from a Cup finals appearance, to only 15 months later being in complete and utter disarray from top to bottom. :help:

Arbiter can't award UFA years. Stone is 27 next year so he is UFA either way.

What is the strategy in Ottawa? Trade away or let every good asset walk? Doesn't seem to make any sense whatsoever....

this is shaping up to be a tough season for the Sens but at least they have Jack Hughes waiting at the end of the rainbow...oh wait...

Losing Karlsson, Duchene, and Stone in one offseason now becomes a nightmare for all sens fans. Without their first round pick if things go poorly they could be in huge trouble. Just shows what poor ownership can do to a franchise.

It's been a stunning fall. I don't know that I've ever felt bad for another fanbase before in over 30 decades of being a hockey fan, but this summer has me feeling awful for Sens & Isles fans, the latter of which is a divisional rival.

Should've asked him where he wanted to go and traded him pre-draft when teams have cap space and assets.

Seems now that the rebuild is being slowed down and once you start receiving picks they are now a year later. Would've been more ideal to get picks in this past draft. Now you are just going to have to wait longer for those 19 and 20 draft picks to develop.

We dont need to spin anything. Just use actual facts instead of making things up. Stone cannot sign a new deal with Ottawa until January 1st.

It doesn't get anymore obvious that Stone wants out then this. He and Karlsson are as good as gone next summer. And what's even more funny is it appears the Sens dont really care as long as they are competitive this year and ensure that the pick they send Colorado isn't in the Bottom 5. Best part about it is even with the core they have now that pick still stands a good chance of being in the Top 5 anyway.
Colorado could really make an awesome trade and snag both Stone and Karlsson, No?

It's not anti-Sens. It's common sense. 1-year contract before UFA means bye bye in any organization in the league.
