Then and there
Benfica vs Porto has to be the game of the day.

Well, not much happened in that match, apart from a couple of staff members being sent off, until an added time goal which secured Porto the title.

On paper, Benfica probably has the better players, but Porto came out of best regardless.

Luis Diaz gets a league title with Porto, right?

Club Brugge beat Union SG 2-0 today, both teams are now tied at the top but Brugge hold the tiebreaker. They meet again on Wednesday in Bruges. After that there's two games left for both teams. If Brugge win on Wednesday they only need 1 more win to win the title.

In Holland, Ajax can win the title on Wednesday if they beat Heerenveen at home. Things could have been a lot different though. Today Ajax trailed AZ 2-1 with 5 minutes to go but managed to tie it up and earn a point. Meanwhile PSV were up 2-0 at Feyenoord but two late goals by Dessers (the tying goal a PK in the 95th minute) denied them the win.
So now Ajax still holds a 4 point lead with two games left instead of PSV closing the gap to 1. Could have made for a really interesting final matchdays since PSV have two easy games left while Ajax play their final game away at Vitesse.

Great game between Club Brugge and Union SG tonight.
Brugge won again, 1-0, Union have been shut out in all 4 games against Brugge this season.
But this game had everything, both teams ended with 10 men, both teams had a goal waved off (Noa Lang for Brugge would have made it 2-0, then Casper Nielsen for Union in the final minutes) and Brugge had a penalty call overturned by VAR as well. Lots of chances on both ends, too.

So what does this result mean. With two games left Club Brugge only need 3 points to win the title. They play at Antwerp on Sunday, then at home against Anderlecht next week.
Union play at Anderlecht on Sunday, then home against Antwerp next week and need 4 more points than Brugge to win the league.

Then and there
Antony seemed to be ceremony master during the on-field celebrations, maybe because he was injured and didn't play in the match, so he had time to prepare for the role. Seemed to be on close terms with almost every other player.

Others leading the proceedings were Blind and captain Tadic, so two veterans taking a role expected from them.

Club Brugge win 3-1 at Antwerp and are champions again, 3rd time in a row and 5th in 7 years.

They were 12 pts out of first place in February but Schreuder has been remarkably efficient since arriving. Only lost 1 game in 5 and a half months, and finishing on a 12-0-1 run.

Dinamo Zagreb win the title again, however this time it was quite a fight as they secured it with one game to go, which would have been a potentially exciting finale against Hajduk, in reality they were there for the taking but Hajduk and Osijek slipped up way too many times against the smaller teams + Osijek had some sort of disagreement between the manager and board in the latter stages of the season

Rubin Kazan relegated in Russia after missing a penalty in the 100th minute which would have at least got them a playoff spot; pretty big blow to a club who were in the Champions League several times in the 2010s and had Slutsky as their manager but they lost all their foreign players due to the political situation. Another surprise was Sochi finishing 2nd but because Russian clubs are banned from Europe they won't have the chance to qualify for the CL

Balotelli scored 5 goals in the Turkish league today (and a nice free kick in the previous match). With Italy not having really good forwards for the NT at the moment, maybe he deserves a spot in the squad short-term.

Belgian League season finished yesterday; a quick recap

Club Brugge capped off their season with a 3rd consecutive title. They go straight into the CL group stage. Manager Alfred Schreuder will leave the club for Ajax. Noa Lang is certain to leave, too. Looks like it could be a summer of changes in Bruges, there's definitely a need for some fresh new bodies.

Union St Gilloise are runners-up after leading the league from October until early May. They will lose several key players too that will need to be replaced. Top goalscorer Deniz Undav is going to Brighton. Midfield leader Casper Nielsen is rumoured to go to Lazio. Union will play CL qualifying rounds.

Anderlecht are 3rd and will play Conference League QF. Vincent Kompany has some interest from Burnley and Wolfsburg and has been very cryptic when asked about it. Striker duo Zirkzee-Kouamé, who were pretty succesfull, will see their loan deals end. Lots to do for Anderlecht again and not a lot of money to work with.

Antwerp are 4th and will also play Conference League QF. Coach Brian Priske has been let go after only 1 season and Mark Van Bommel is almost certainly going to take over. Everybody is curious to see what Marc Overmars is going to do in his first summer at the club.

Gent finished 5th and won the Belgian Cup, so they get the Europa League spot. Manager Hein Van Haezebrouck signed a new 2-year deal yesterday, but they have a pretty old team and their best player, forward Tarik Tissoudali, wants to leave.

Genk, last years runners-up, were the most disappointing team this year. Manager Bernd Storck is leaving and they are looking to sign Mechelen coach Wouter Vrancken. Squad will probably get a pretty significant overhaul, starting with top goalscorer Paul Onuachu who desperately wants out.

Beerschot finished last and will go down to the 2nd division which means we no longer will have an Antwerp derby next year. Westerlo won the 2nd division and are promoted.

Standard Liege had one of their worst seasons ever with a 14th placed finish. American investment firm 777 Partners have bought the club but nobody really knows what their plans are so it's going to be wait and see.

Then and there
Vitesse won the Dutch first leg European playoff over AZ with a late Openda goal. Klasie scored an important goal for AZ, who will play the return leg at home.

Bit weird that Dasa already left Vitesse before such an important match to go back to Israel (to get married), even though his contract ends after this season. Openda will also leave after his loan spell from Brugge finishes.
