RIP to Jerry Krause who passed away at age of 77

Loved the Bulls in 90's and he like Phil/MJ deserves the credit for his those 6 championships

Its a shame how things ended and his failed rebuild with Chandler/Curry + 98 Bulls breakup tarnish his legacy a bit (Unfairly in some respects)

Still the best GM that Chicago has ever seen. His work building two different dynasty teams (91-93 and 96-98) deserves praise and his bold moves early in career as GM such as the Oakley trade (Which enraged Jordan at time) paid off

Krause was also a longtime successful MLB scout

Yep

Should have been in HOF years ago but his battle for Winters and HOF boycott of MJ induction (Which was poor move IMO) led many in HOF to keep him out

He is finalist this year

He had boycotted the HOF in general because of Winters's exclusion. Sad that Krause isn't in.

Pretty incredible that he was a scout in two sports.

Krause should be in the HOF. He made some mistakes along the way ... but also made some great picks.

Krause inherited Jordan but made some incredible moves too.

* Traded Polynice + assets for little known Pippen
* Picked Horace Grant instead of Joe Wolf who Jordan wanted.
* Drafted Charles Oakley and then traded him for Bill Cartwright
* Signed 1st round bust John Paxson for nothing
* Signed Hodges, Levingston, Wennington, Brown, Hansen, Kerr, etc.
* Traded Will Perdue for Dennis Rodman
* Signed Ron Harper who was once thought as washed up
* Drafted Toni Kukoc
* Signed Bison Dele
* Traded for 1st round bust Luc Longley
* Hired Phil Jackson
* Drafted Scott Williams and BJ Armstrong

Crumbs had his mistakes too. Drafting Stacey King, Brad Sellers, Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler, etc. He also traded Elton Brand away.

However, all in all ... Jerry Krause was born and raised in Chicago ... a HOF basketball executive. Yes, he was odd ... but he won.

Trading away Brand for the 2nd overall pick was not a mistake. It was an inspired move. Krause got screwed because the 99-2002 drafts sucked. If Krause's plan had come together in 1997 or 2003, people would call him the greatest GM of all time.

It was a mistake. Krause constructed a roster with a bunch of teenagers who did not know how to be a professional. It was only when Tyson Chandler got away from the Bulls did his career truly blossom. The Eddy Curry / Tyson Chandler experiment didn't work. People don't remember that Krause had a young Elton Brand and Ron Artest on the same team ... and got rid of them.

You weren't winning anything with Elton Brand as your best player. He took a chance on 2 kids with huge upside that didn't pan out. Chandler's career blossomed because he wasn't in his early 20's anymore, not because of some mythological not knowing how to be a pro.

Also I like Ron Artest, but he's a one time all star that almost got kicked out of the league. A great role player but falling in love with role players is why the Bulls are where they are now. Its exactly why the Bulls should have traded Butler, tanked this year and hoped to end up with 2 top 5 picks.

Drafting 2 HS centers was idiotic

Have to remember that time period. You just had Kobe, Rashard Lewis, Tracy McGrady, Jermaine O'Neal, and Garnett come out. Drafting high schoolers was the in thing to do. Plus if you look at the rest of that draft, its a lot of garbage until you get into the late first round.

Having Curry and Brand doesn't make the Bulls much better either.

Brand trade was bad and drafting both Curry and Chandler ended up costing him dearly

Blowing up 01 Bulls was mistake when they were well into a promising rebuild that franchise for some reason moved on from too early

When Brand was traded the roster had

Ron Mercer (24 yrs old)
Elton Brand (21 yrs old)
Ron Artest (21 yrs old)
Brad Miller (24 yrs old)
Jamal Crawford (20 yrs old)

At time Mercer was a very promising player who's career was thrown completely off tracks as a result of off court stuff and injuries

2000 and 2001 drafts derailed franchise

2000 draft sucked overall but in 01 the Bulls not only gave up Brand for Chander who would be disappointment in Chicago but they passed on selecting Joe Johnson and Jason Richardson to draft Curry who disappointed

Also could have had Clipper select Pau Gasol 2nd overall instead of Chandler. Brand for Gasol would have been easier to look back on then Brand for Chandler

There were also a lot of bad high schoolers drafted ,, So to just cite the good one's is a bit of a stretch

The Chandler over Gasol is the only real miss. You can go back and cherry pick guys lower in the draft like Joe Johnson but no one thought he'd become what he did. Jason Richardson was just a guy.

That team isn't winning you anything. Ron Mercer is/was garbage.

Stockpiling picks and cap space was inspired. It just didn't work out.

What does any of them have to do with drafting two centers?

Great outing for Shields tonight against the Rangers. He made Beltre look like a fool on a breaking ball for strike 3. Anderson crushed a triple and had a single.

Lopez was great yesterday as well. Checking out Indians/Rockies before my flight back tomorrow.

Also took Oakley over Mailman.

He was also in love with McGrady and actually had a deal with Toronto to acquire T-Mac for Pippen and Jordan vetoed it. In the short term, it was good because the Bulls squeezed out 1 more championship out of it. In the long term, McGrady could've been the heir apparent.

Sad news about Gale Sayers. By the time I started following the bears in 1970 he was pretty much done, but my Dad said he was the only running back he saw that could compare to Payton as a RB and was as explosive as Barry Sanders.

Gale Sayers was actually more exciting than Payton, and Barry Sanders was a bit of a hybrid between Sayers and Payton... less strong than Payton but stronger than Sayers; quicker and more elusive than Payton, but not as much as Sayers. Sayers was electric.

If Sanders had stayed in the game longer as he could have, he would have had more records.

RIP Krause. Thanks for making those championship VHSs I would watch over and over again a possibility.

Wonder if Jordan and/or Phil say anything about him.

McGrady, the heir apparent [to Jordan]?

Jordan and Phil made official statements. Extremely complimentary. Basically said Krause was an integral part of the dynasty.
