But then we have to discuss among other fanbases. What if we just want to talk politics among Canuck fans? :)

Can the Canuck board create a political thread?

These would just be my suggestions, but;

1) Create a "Canuck Politic" Thread on the Political Board.
2) If you wish to discuss topics with your fellow Canuck fans, PM or a Chat group of some sort would be your best bet.

Political discussion is not permitted anywhere on the Site apart from the Politics board.

I hope Uber eventually makes its way to Vancouver and Victoria. I can't stand cabs. The amount of times they try to screw me with roundabout routes in Victoria is mind boggling. Just because I'm drunk doesn't mean I forgot how to navigate a fairly small city I've lived in almost my entire life.

I thought I read the city of Vancouver already 'banned' uber, taxi laws or somethings stupid like that.

The first and last time I took an Uber, what would usually end up being a ~$20 cab ride was $85. There's no way of knowing until they get you to your destination either.

I hate taking cabs as much as you do, but I can't understand why Uber is being viewed as a legitimate alternative right now.

Tell me about it.
I had a harrowing experience when I was in Asia...
And just when I thought I would be safe in Canada...
I get ripped off by the cab driver...
Who told me the zone system was suspended...
Which was a blatant lie.

It was only $2 more...
And I was too tired to fight it...
But that was the last thing I needed.
:shakehead

That said...
I am apprehensive about Uber.
That company skirts around permits and regulations...
And as a result...
Roads become even less safe than they already are...
And customers are actually unprotected...
When accidents happen.
Plus...
While I am not the biggest fan of cab drivers in Vancouver...
I also believe that they deserve to make a living...
Which Uber undermines.

If Uber ever makes it here...
I feel that there will be a lot of unintended consequences.

Then speak up. Whenever I take a cab home drunk I always tell the driver what route to go. I also have my phone out and half the time I'm watching my beacon on the map to make sure he's going the right way (also a good way to keep focused so you don't pass out in the cab too).

It's simple, Cab companies need to adapt and quit being old school about everything.

Kill or be killed.

HF is so politically correct, so many rules as to what we can/can't say even in the OT thread :shakehead

Anyways, anyone catch Arsenal's game today? Can't believe they actually made it to the knockout stage. I thought they were done weeks ago. Also lol @ the empty arena in Kyiv as punishment

At least no ManU :D

Kill or be killed.

Adaptability is not the issue though.
To run a cab...
It is not just about a car...
A driver...
And maintenance of said car.
There are licenses that need to be acquired...
And more importantly...
Insurances that has to bought.
Uber allows its drivers to skip these regulatory steps...
Which gives them an unfair advantage...
In terms of cost...
And by extension...
It makes the roads even less safe...
Since the drivers are not under any rules or jurisdictions.
Plus...
If an accident happens...
Customers may have to bear the full cost...
As Uber drivers are largely uninsured.

Honestly...
"Kill or be killed" should be the motto for Uber customers...
Because as of now...
To get into a Uber car...
Is the equivalent of a game of Russian Roulette.

Now...
Cities can catch up...
And make rules to regulate Uber drivers...
And allow them to buy insurance.
However...
I am not sure that every driver would actually follow the rules...
Or buy insurance...
Since the majority of them are out to make a quick buck...
And there is no way for the authorities to check every single Uber car out there.
With cab drivers...
Most of them work for large companies...
And it is a lot easier to check one company...
Than to check every single driver.

As I have said before...
I am not a fan of cabs...
Not by a long shot...
Since I was screwed by one...
But I still prefer them over Uber.
For one thing...
I know I am probably covered.

I am sure criticism of our great overlords is against the rules.
It was nice knowing you DFAC.

My issue with cabs isn't the price, it's the availability.

There are too few cabs in Vancouver. And when you call for one, you get a busy signal, or wait on hold forever. Waiting 20 minutes to catch a cab is ridiculous, but that's normal in Vancouver.

Compare it to other big cities and it's obvious how much our taxis suck. I can get all the way across Valencia for like 10 euros, and there's a cab on every corner.

Uber just has a better system:

-They come to you, so no hunting for one or walking down to a busy street.
-Geo-location based, so you don't have to explain where you are.
-You can't get your Uber stolen when you call for one.
-Route and ETA provided, so you don't worry about being ripped off by a circuitous route.
-Fare estimates before you're locked in.
-Fare splitting features for when you share one.
-Auto-billing to your credit card.
-Honestly, just quicker. One quick tap and you're rolling. Way easier for when you're drunk.

Now taxi companies COULD build a similar or better system than this. They could band together, pool money to build and maintain a universal taxi app, and wipe the floor with Uber.

Instead they gripe and try to block them. Why should we ditch a much better system simply because an antiquated industry already exists? It's like not allowing cars because carriage manufacturers would lose money.

Uber has warts, sure. But I have little sympathy for cabbies if they aren't willing to offer a competitive service.

City's will catch up with regulations.

But in terms of safety. Every cab I've been in the driver is usually a maniac. Thinks they are entitled to do what ever the **** they want on the road.

It's all irrelevant anyway. Automated cars are coming. whether the cab companies like it or not the cab drivers will become irrelevant soon.

I agree with you on crazy cab drivers...
As I have seen my fair share...
But at least I know they are insured.
Currently...
Uber drivers are not covered.

Until cities do catch up to the rules and regulations...
Uber should not enter any city.
That is my stance...
Even though I would still be worried...
Because I see no possible way to effectively oversee all the Uber cars...
Since they are basically all independent contractors.
