The Pioneers shutout the Lions 5-0 to open the series, but tonight Lindenwood gave the defending champs a scare after tieing the game at 4-4 with about 5 minutes left, before ultimately falling 5-4 on a late Denver goal.

Men's hockey closes out the 2022 calendar year with an OT winner to split with Vermont. A late Christmas gift from the Vermont defense on the pass too.

Men's basketball also picked up their first OVC win over TN Tech today.

Men's hockey was swept by North Dakota this weekend. The Lions put another scare into a top team but couldn't close out with a win either night.

Trent Burnham put in his entry for save of the year

It has been a brutal year for the Catamounts, nice to see LU improving!

Coach was on the hot take central show this morning, and he’s not pleased with the coverage or lack thereof in St. Louis. That’s what happens when you’re in a pro sports market.

After experiencing Mullett Arena this past weekend, it is a perfect venue for college hockey! But seeing the Coyotes game on Sunday while the vies are incredible of the on ice action, it definitely lacks the amenities an NHL franchise needs.

A few of the grad students from the roster have moved onto the ECHL in the last few weeks

Ryan Finnegan signed with Reading and Andy Willis with Fort Wayne

I will put together a post over the next few weeks with some of the projected outgoing players, and the committed players for next season for anyone interested in seeing how the roster is stacking up for year 2 of NCAA play

Fort Wayne isn't a bad place to end up for an ECHL player. It's my hometown. The Komets get huge support for an ECHL team. They do AHL numbers for attendance. They are unaffiliated though, so it may be harder to impress an NHL team. On the other hand, they play to win, not develop their affiliate's prospects, so there is room to earn PT.

Most importantly for a St. Louis kid, there is a restaurant chain in Ft Wayne with ffamily ties to Cunetto's on the Hill. You can get pretty good Toasted Rav. Probably the best outside St. Louis. No Imo's, Ted Drew's or gooey buttercake though.

Let's begin looking at how the roster is shaping up for year 2 of NCAA DI Competition. I'll break up the posts to keep from a super long post, so first up the look at Defense and Goaltending. Note that any references to academic years will be for how players will be considered in 23-24:

Goalies:
LU is losing grad students Roni Salmenkangas, and Matt Ladd who were part of a three goalie rotation with Trent Burnham this past season. The Lions will return Burnham as a Jr. in net, and he will be complimented by two incoming Freshman.

One of the first players to commit to LU following their elevation to DI, Ethan Barwick comes in from the AJHL's Brooks Bandits and has turned many heads in goal for Brooks. The Bandits are the 2023 AJHL champions and in the midst of playing for the Centennial Cup in Canada after winning it in 2022. Bandits goaltender Ethan Barwick commits to Lindenwood

Adam Johnson has also committed after playing with the NAHL's Johnstown Tomahawks and Danbury Hat Tricks this season Johnstown goalie Johnson makes NCAA DI commitment

Defense:
Barring any late transfer portal activity, the Lions defense looks to be set for 22-23 with minimal change. LU is currently projected to return all of So. Kieran Ruscheinski (2019 7th Rd. Pick by Montreal), Jr. Aidan Yakimchuk, So. Coltan Wilkie, So. Joe Prouty, Jr. Caleb Price, So. Kabore Dunn, So. Jack Anderson, and Sr. Mason Kruger

The only change to the defense will be the addition of Cole Teleki out of the Oklahoma Warriors program. The Warriors advanced out of the NAHL's South Division to the Robertson Cup this past weekend. Teleki also becomes the 3rd player to commit to LU from the Warriors in three straight seasons.

I did not do a great job of following up that post

For anyone interested though, the university released season tickets for both men's and women's hockey.

Any updates/thoughtsfrom the Saturday scrimmage?
It definitely looks promising for the new players to make big impacts, a lot of returners look like they are ready to the next steps too, granted the competition was against their own team mates so it will be different to see them against another team.

The scrimmage was much more physical than I expected it to be too.

Separately the Lindenwood women's team had a historic start to their season with a sweep of Bemidji State. The team has started with a season opening sweep for the first time in their NCAA history going back to 2011-12.

Morgan Neitzke was named CHA Forward of the week with 5 points this weekend, surpassing 50 in her career.

Lions off to the Springs to open up the season. I think the keys are quick starts both nights. Get ahead of the altitude and build some confidence. Think the games are on Altitude Sports network. Would be huge to get off to a good start this weekend.

Always take a split on the road. Good effort at altitude last week in the Springs vs an AFA team that took down Michigan State last night. The boys did well to not let a last second goal (literally) lead to a heartbreaking loss in OT. Showed great heart and compete to get the W in OT. Off to Columbus this weekend to face a ranked Buckeye team.
