Seems to me like the Staal line has been dogshit the past five games (1 point), and Rod leans on them too much. Their offensive numbers have come back down to earth and the way our roster is set up right now it’s like they’re icing three 3rd freaking lines.

There isn’t a single line that has 3 legit first line players on it right now, yet there are at a minimum of 5 should be first line players on this roster. Stop trying to spread the god damn scoring out.
Rod has never loaded up the first line more than a few games a year. He's all about spreading the talent and line matching. Obsessed with it. I doubt that's ever going to change.

Another 5-3 loss from a blown game. Un-fing real

It’s the new 5-1 loss.

I'll bet.

Can't wait until Saturday with all the Pens fans to dick with us after we get smoked.

They better be glad they weren’t there tonight. It was College Rush and a bunch of dudes on the third level were ready to rumble.

Important to note, despite the last week or so of sucking we are squarely tied for 2nd in the entire league and are 1st in the Metro still. Plus there's the fact that the regular season doesn't mean a damn thing except to get us into the dance, which we will be. Have a good night, we'll get back to rolling and winning soon enough.

It cannot be understated how awful Kevin Weekes was tonight

He is like the Leah Hextall of dudes. I guess having balls "like churchbells" don't make you a good announcer
Jersey is the caliber of team Carolina has to beat in the playoffs.

I don’t feel good about playing Kochetkov or Coghlan or Chatfield in the playoffs. Kochetkov should be in the press box or Chicago for the playoffs. The Borg need to fix the third pairing.

Well- I feel like the only kind of team the Canes are well matched against are high octane offensive ones, like the Oilers and Panthers, etc that can be grinded and shot suppressed into submission and Slavin takes the lunch money from the star player.

Because they sure as shit don't match up well against a brutal team or a team who collapses to the slot and blocks everything not shot from the perimeter as we've seen prime examples of this past week.

But I guess none of that is relevant with positionally unsound goaltending.

"Is it the poor goaltending or the poor defense" was a mainstay discussion back during the dark years.

Like I said earlier, a save would have been nice, but I'll be surprised if we see Coghlin again while healthy

I've seen some of the softest goals since Darling in the past 4 (maybe 5) games. Soft goals tend to put a bright spot light on poor defense, when maybe some of that stuff was happening before but you gloss over it. There are varying degrees of soft goals. The sort we're currently dealing with are a little concerning considering there's no timetable on our #1.

I'm listening to Adam Gold just ripping the defense in the post game and...

Man I don't get it. We supporess the hell out of opposing shots. There's a couple breakdowns but damn, he's really smoking crack if he's absolving the goalies of blame here
Regardless of goaltending, It’s still absolutely fair to rip the 3rd pair for their atrocious play. There can be multiple reasons a team losing

He's ripping the entire defense, not just the 3rd pair

And he said he doesn't blame Kooch for the goals against

In my brain that goes down like this.

Hurricanes coaching staff: TIMMY! We’ve got some killer roster depth this season we can almost ice two legit scoring forwards on every line!

Hurricanes opponents coaching staff: That Marty Necas sure is on a tear this season, and he’s been playing with all-star Svechnikov! That’s a tough matchup. Who’s their center? Paul Stastny? He’s still playing? Well we don’t have to worry about him as much BECAUSE HE SUCKS, just focus on shutting down the two first line wingers and don’t worry about the third line center so much.

Something like that.

Plus, the third pair sucks, it’s pretty much sucked all season, they need to fix it. Goaltending has been BAAAAAD these past few games.

its obvious Staal is way to slow to be a shut down line against NJ
NJ transitions from defense to offense insanely fast, and it seems like they like to carry the puck into the zone. Feels like the Staal line isn’t as effective in the defensive zone when they can’t force play into the boards.

Also felt like NJ had a game plan. They were definitely a little more prepared than they were the first two times these teams met.

Sounds like some chemistry issues or something similar could be contributing:

Staal on the four-game losing streak: “I hope this group doesn’t think they’re better than they are.”

Kinda rare for the Capt. to speak in such a manner.
I was wondering about that quote.

Just from watching these past few games it doesn’t outwardly appear that guys are really coasting or anything. There seems to be some frustration but it hasn’t seemed like there’s a huge lack of effort or anything.

It is kind of odd for him to speak out like that.

NJ system has everyone slide over to the side of the ice where the puck is when the puck gets along the boards. Which happens a lot because teams like to slide the puck along the boards. It really allows an easy no look drop pass to transition to offense quickly. We like to keep guys on islands and play certain areas with some support but not all 5 players. so our no look drop passes end up in a TO than transition or more zone cycling.

Captain and his line should look in the mirror. Staal, Martinook and Fast are all -5 with one assist in 5 games since the New Year. They should literally be the 4th line at this point. My only hope is that they don't get scored on because I know they aren't going to create any production when they're on the ice.

Well that was an interesting game. First, it seemed like the ice was total dogshit. Both teams looked slow, missed passes, and whiffed on a bunch of shots.

Devils hit two posts on mostly wide open nets after being left alone in front.

Obviously it was a tough game for Kochetkov. The first goal can’t happen. The second goal, I *think* both Chatfield AND Couglan shot the puck on goal. By mistake no doubt but still.

I’m still flabbergasted that RBA (or Gleason) left the 3rd pair out after that goal. They never play together, one’s on his off-side, they just played a part in letting one guy outwork three Canes for a goal … and they stay out? Baaaaaaaad.

I still don’t get why CDH is out for last 2 games. I fully admit my bias - but - it’s patently obvious he knows how to play the game, and has pretty damn good chemistry with Chatfield.

Couglan had a rough night. I have no idea what’s going on if he sees the ice the next game.

Agree but to be fair they have great most of the year. They are older and I never expected that high level of play to go 82 games.
