Barrie is underrated.

This doesn't make the Oilers much better. Adding Ekholm AND having Barrie in the lineup would move the needle. Taking Barrie out and adding Ekholm in does piss all overall... especially at the cost of 2 1sts and his cap hit is higher as well. Those assets are better used on something better than Ekholm.. especially when you get him at the cost of moving out Barrie.

Let's watch the games and see what the net effect of this will be overall.

Also... of course Holland could still do more here in deals the next few days to help redeem this deal... still a few days left to try and actually improve the team instead of sideways/downgrade moves.
Barrie is not better than Ekholm. Just different. We weren't going anywhere with Barrie in the lineup, and that's no diss on him, as I think he's had a good year. But the mix wasn't right, and it was very obvious. We badly needed more size, grit and cycle busting on the back end along with a calming influence to get the puck out.

If they can move out Yamo, Ceci ++ and get Chycrhyn and Bjugstad, I will consider this an enormous day. Our defence needed a huge shakeup, and hopefully this is the start.

Are we playing who has the best PP? Or are we trying to win hockey games?

Barrie was a 3rd pairing d-man and PP specialist, Ekholm is a top pairing d-man.

We'll probably shave like 3% off our PP and add like 4% to our PK and be a good chunk better at 5 on 5.
How many hockey games has Ekholm been winning.

I don't know that Oilers fans even know much about him. I don't other than the games we've played and frankly because I find nashville awful to watch I only see him against the Oilers and anytime I do see the Preds Draisaitl is destroying them.

I have to presume, and do, that Nashville must somehow be better against other clubs than they are against us but I don't know I've seen Ekholm and company getting anything but plowed.

To the extent that posters in the thread wonder jokingly whether Ekholm will have any PTSD coming here.

Maybe you have seen him good. But he's been a turnstile against us.

In anycase in this deal I went from thinking that yama was going the other way, which would be great, just get rid of him, to finding out its Barrie and multiple assets going the other way, and I loved Barrie.

Ekholm doesn't solve the Oilers being one of the worst coached teams in the league or having average at best goaltending. We're about to find how good Ekholm is actually. We knew Barrie was very good and none better on a PP.
