I have really liked Larsson's game of late. He is physical, making good passes, skating well and getting some shots on net. I don't see us resigning him, but I don't see us trading him before the playoffs either. I think Holland will be all in this year (without trading our first rounder).

No playoff team is trading us a goalie, and no non-playoff team wants UFA Barrie. Maybe you can get a winger but I don't think our wingers are all that weak, and there in no guarantee of chemistry for any winger that comes in. Rather keep Barrie for a playoff run and make the tough decisions in the offseason.
Losing him for nothing would be bad. Extending him would also be bad. He came here to get paid and he will. Just hope it isn't us because we already paid Chiasson and Kassian for career years playing with McD and Drai.

I get the feeling that Larsson is offered a new contract. Barrie offers what Bear and Bouchard should be able to provide. Barrie will be the most expensive of the bunch.

Barrie is doing exactly what we figured (and he hoped) he would do. Put up a boatload of points and put himself in a situation to sign a big FA contract at the end of the year. IMO, Barrie is gone at the end of the year.

RHD next year is Bouchard, Bear, and probably Larsson.
LHD next year is Nurse and some combination of Jones, Russell, Lagesson, Koekkoek, and Klefbom.

This is with Samurokov and Broberg in the AHL.

EDIT - So far, the Bouchard Jones pairing looks pretty good.

I'm not as sold with Larsson as you all are. I mean both are playing for contracts, but I think Larsson's abilities are easier to replace than
Barrie's are.

To add, Larsson has a bad back, and anyone with a bad back will tell ya it never really heals.

Larsson is a tricky one for me. I'd be ok with a short deal at a lower cap hit than his current $4m, but I also won't be devastated if we lose him to free agency. I don't see him as irreplaceable whatsoever, and my gut-instinct is telling me that his remaining shelf-life as a guy that can play top 4 is only a couple years.

The left side is looking very good for awhile... if Klef returns the first 2 are Klef and Nurse followed by the guys you mentioned. In my order - Jones, Lagesson, Broberg. Koekoek is UFA and won't play again.

Russel is good at both side and will be making 1.25 next season. I'm actually totally fine with him on the right side on third pair for that money (after Bear and Bouchard). I think he'd be great paired up with one of LD's.

Sucks Samorokov is out for the rest of this season as he's my dark horse.

Also, not sure what we lose in expansion draft? While I hope it's Neal or Kassian... it'll be someone like Jones/Lagesson I think which would suck.

I want Larsson back but I think he can get paid somewhere else for more. If it's between him and Barrie for resigning.. I take Larsson every day.

FTR.. I like Barrie and what he's doing. I hope he does get paid. I just don't want to see 30 to 34 year old Barrie on my blue line making 5 million a season. More than happy to gamlbe on 23 to 26 year old Bouchard in that exact spot.

The Semin comparison above was very good. It'll be a classic Oilers 'ink dried and now it's shit' contract.

That's where I'm at... I think a comparable would be Radko Gudas.. he signed 3 years x 2.5 (in covid free agency). I'd take Larsson for that but I think he can get more somewhere else. My ideal would be 2 years x 3 million.

We need to hang onto Barrie until Bear/Bocuhard show that they can produce offensively at ES.
Bear had 19 ES pts last season and Barrie has 9 already this year.
They guys are learning the offensive side from Barrie it seems.
Ideally Barrie mentors the kids this year and moves on afterwards fetching himself a 6.5M+ per long term deal elsewhere.

Yeah someone else probably throws Larsson $3.5m x 4 or something if I had to guess. From his perspective, I guess it's a matter of does he want to stay? Teams willing and able to pay that kind of money and term to him probably aren't going to be very good teams. So if he likes it here and wants to stay on the trajectory that Holland has us on, maybe he takes the cheaper deal?

I think the lack of cap space available league-wide will sway some UFA behavior this summer. Guys knowing that they can't really cash in the way they would've in past years will possibly adopt thinking along the lines of "might as well be on a winning team".

If Larsson keeps this up (and proves his back issues are no longer a problem), I think he's a must re-sign. 3-4 years would be good at around 3.5 per. If we don't sign him, guaranteed, we will be looking for the exact same player next season.

I think Barrie sticks around. I could see a 5x5 deal or something, especially if we go on a long run. He probably wants to win and seems to be having fun out there with our core guys.

So for years, I seen on here fans begging for an offensive dman , we finally get on currently tied for second in scoring league-wide for D team is 11-2 last 13 and multiple posts on we should replace him with Hamilton who was a defensive train wreck in Calgary . SMH

If Barrie gets 5 x 5 I hope that comes with a Holland resignation. Thta would go up there with the Lucic, Koskinen and Kassian contracts. 35 year old Tyson Barrie making 5 million... I don't even want to see 32 year old Tyson Barrie making that much.

Here is a graph for D in the NHL. Note the dropoff after 30 (which is his age next season)...

I've seen this comment everywhere... I disagree. I don't think we were begging for a powerplay specialist or an offensive Dman. I think we were begging for D that doesn't suck. As recently as last season we had Brandon Manning playing in the NHL for us. Benning is getting exposed pretty badly in Nashville as well. Kevin Gravel? Jason Garrison? Chris Wideman? Joel Persson? Alex Petrovic?

So yeah, when I saw those guys I was like we need better D. That didn't mean we wanted a RWer who happens to play D and get a lot of points on a world class powerplay that was already world class before his arrival. Essentially, I think we wanted more Klef's and Nurse's but not a Barrie. Or a TRUE 1 like Pronger was. I don't think anyone was saying what we need is a guy that can get a lot of points while leaking chances against.

IMO he is not a PP specialist. What he brings is ES offense and puck movement. I have not felt that he has been all that great on the PP TBH. When we are considering his contract IMO it should be with the mindset that he will be a top or 2nd pairing defenseman that plays PP2 long term.
Leon talked about this the other day saying adding Barrie has made their transition game out of the zone a lot faster

I was actually thinking to myself that this in itself might've been an issue for the team. When you aren't use to getting a quick crisp pass you are probably wonder wtf is going on.

No, a number 1 Dman was... that is not Tyson Barrie.. just because names like Hedman are near him in scoring doesn't mean he's a number 1.

Yep almost 2 decades we have been crying for a Barrie on our back end. But as it always is in this city he doesn’t run guys over so he is not a defenseman. Not surprising we even ran Coffey outa town back in the day so....

Exactly. “He’s not Hedman” so that means he’s no good.

Is he a #1? No.
Does he have warts? Yes.

But he brings a puck moving element that has been sorely lacking and has an offensive pedigree that we haven’t had in forever. Guys not winning the Norris but he’s a very good offensive D-man and I bet Connor and Drai love getting fed in full stride vs most of the D we’ve had that are off the glass and out.

If he re-signs for 4.5M/yr then you don't hesitate. If he's asking for 6M/yr or more, then you have to step back and ask yourself if he's worth that for being a middle pairing offensive D.

No way am I signing Larsson beyond 2 years.

Nurse, Bear, Bouchard, and Broberg will be on the team for sure. Samorukov and Lagesson could grab the #5 spot. And Klefbom should be back.

2 years @ 3 M
