I tend to agree with dirty on this. The Lalonde return isn't that far off from the McLeod return, or the return we've seen for some other high first rounders, and that's setting aside the compensation picks the trading team receives in those cases (which really shouldn't be part of the calculus, but I expect are anyway). I don't think I would have paid what Guelph did, but I don't think it's hugely outlandish. Their pick cupboard was ridiculous (seven 2nds in 2018 and 2019) and turning some of those picks into elite young talent made a lot of sense. That said, if Lalonde underperforms (a fair risk), this could be one of those rare trades that disappoints both teams. Guelph gives up serious capital for the wrong guy, and Sudbury doesn't get an elite roster player back for the #2 overall pick. (What if all of those second-rounders they draft refuse to report to Sudbury?) Really, this trade is operating from something of an unfortunate premise, which is that a hockey program with that much history, and in a city so passionate about the league and sport, should not be losing top-flight talents after a single year. Papineau needs to get that ship righted fast.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any information on those conditionals. My best guess is that the 2019 pick is protection for Lalonde making the NHL in his nineteen-year-old year (it's too early to be OA protection) and the 2021 pick is OA protection. We know he's going to report, and performance-based conditions on a D don't really make sense. Could also be a draft position condition or a games played condition.
