The past two seasons, sfan has maintained this topic. Sadly, he hasn't been seen in these parts since late 2016. In his absence, I'd like to continue with it, as this topic has generated some pretty interesting discussion between fans and was a hugely helpful resource for me in building the OHL Draft Pick Database.

To paraphrase sfan, the purpose of this thread is to share information and encourage discussion across the HFB OHL community about trades. Please post to this thread to share, update or correct any trade transaction details, including any details on conditional pick conditions, if possible. Ideally, include links to information sources such as league or team websites or social media posts so I can verify the details. (You can also contact me on Twitter at @writemattwilson.)

Please check the most recent posts in the topic to see if the details of a given trade have already been posted. I'll try to keep this topic as up-to-date as possible, but the list may not reflect the most recent transactions on a given day.

Notes:

1) The OHL Draft Pick Database is available here. It contains the most up-to-date record of which OHL teams hold which draft picks in every future OHL draft, including compensation picks and all known public information on trade conditions. A record of all trades since the 2015-16 season is also included.
2) The past two OHL Trades Season Threads are available here: 2015-16, 2016-17.
3) Conditional draft picks are marked with a "*".

Storm/Battallion/Firebirds fans, any thoughts on the first few trades of the season that you'd like to share with the rest of us? Also, does anyone know the conditions on the Rhodes trade? (I'm assuming it's that he reports to Sudbury for his overage season, but I haven't found confirmation on that anywhere.)

The Flint Firebirds addition of LW Max Kislinger from North Bay for a 2020 15th round pick (turns into a 6th round 2020 pick if he plays 1 game in Flint) is a good addition. Flint loses the firepower of Kole Sherwood, Ryan Moore, Everett Clarke, and Luke Kirwan which is why I like the addition of this experienced player. I am not expecting him to be a 80 point player, but a serviceable winger who has some upside and should get lots of ice time.

Updated the list with Friday's trades and all known conditional info. A trade freeze is now in effect through the month of July.

Looks like a solid add, Tc. Looking forward to seeing the Firebirds in action next season!

Trade freeze lift's Tuesday August 1'st.
Any whispers of trades that have been "agreed upon" during this freeze?

My thoughts on the trades from the Storm perspective are not positive ones.

I thought a bunch of veterans would be shipped out in order to open up ice time for the younger players, but they haven't yet (We shall see what happens going forward). Rhodes is probably equal to Shoemaker and the careers of Poirer/Burghardt have been pretty similar as well. Moncada didn't have a great rookie year, but moving him in those deals makes no sense.

We finally have a trade that has no conditions attached! Elijah Roberts from Kitchener to Niagara for a 2nd and a couple thirds.

I like this trade for both teams. Roberts has talent but failed to develop in Kitchener and was getting pushed out on a crowded blueline. Niagara has space and some history developing defencemen. I suspect due to his size that he's a five-year player in the OHL, as well, meaning he should be around for Niagara's next contention window.

As for the Rangers, they add to their considerable stockpile of picks. Roberts was a second-round pick (#32) in the 2015 draft, and the Rangers picked up a 2nd in the 2020 in the trade (it is SSM's, so I'd bet on it being worse than 32nd overall, but let's say for argument's sake it's around the same slot). So they moved five years back in the draft, but picked up 3rds in 2018 and 2019 and got two years out of Roberts. I think that's pretty close to breaking even--a pretty good result, even if Roberts didn't work out in a Rangers uniform.

Side note: new Rangers GM Mike McKenzie has certainly been busy this month.

Very quiet on the trade front. With so many head coaching changes this off season, management must be waiting for the new coaches and staff to view first hand all "in house" talent before making any needed moves. It sure makes for a boring off season but perhaps things will heat up in a week or so.

Bulldogs' Luke Kutkevicius acquired by Windsor

(Windsor, ON) – General Manager Warren Rychel has completed a trade with the Hamilton Bulldogs, acquiring 1998-born centre Luke Kutkevicius.

The Bulldogs get Sudbury’s 6th round pick in 2018 and Windsor’s 5th in 2021 – the latter being a performance-based conditional pick that could become a 4th in 2021.

The 6’1, 162-pound Toronto native was originally Mississauga’s 2nd round pick (#25) in the 2014 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. After a season with the Steelheads, Kutkevicius landed in Hamilton, playing in 95 games over parts of two seasons, setting career highs in goals (6) and assists (16) in 2016-17.

“Luke brings experience and speed down the middle,†Rychel said. “He’ll get the chance to play a big role and will be a nice addition to our leadership group.â€

Kutkevicius will be on the ice when 2017 Training Camp opens on August 28th.

Thanks, ETA! Rychel has certainly been busy. Interesting to see a performance-based condition attached to the pick, as those are quite uncommon in the OHL. (The last one I remember was in the Cody Payne trade from Saginaw to Niagara.) 45 points seems possible for Kutkevicius on a rebuilding team, though it wouldn't change the accounting much.

insideout, I expect you're right that we'll see things heating up in the next week or two. Last year there were twelve trade between the middle of August and opening night.

Rumours floating around Lalonde is headed to Guelph from Sudbury although accuracy from the source on Twitter is not 100% actual fact at this point more rumour than anything else but until the actual deal gets confirmed have to put on the source eyes and wait

If he does indeed head to the Royal city then the Storm could have another good piece on their club to build around although just rumours at this point

That deal between the Storm and Wolves seemed decent for both parties

Lalonde moves to a club that has the pieces in place to be a solid contender in the west and in Guelph and the Wolves get a solid return with assets to boot well done Guelph that will make the 8 games the Attack play the Storm a lot more exciting

Based on 64 OHL games, 12 points, and being 176 lbs. I would have to agree. Some of these trades are outlandish.

Two 2nds are conditional; so, 2-2nds 2-3rds and a possibly sevrviceable D, for now. For comparison sake on refuse to report players picked in top 3. Flint is guaranteed 3 of each and comp 1st & (comp 2nd for not being able to pick one selection after previous year?) for R. McLoed. That works fine for both teams? Lalonde deal does not warrant inclusion with outlandish trades.
