because professional athletes never regress in their development? What if we had locked down MDZ to a 5-year after 2011-12?

22 years old and more RFA years until UFA status compared to Kreider? Differen't position? Not back to back years of similar production?

Sorry, not a good example.

If I'm his agent, I advise him not to take anything that leaves him at any older than 30, maybe 31, when his next contract comes up. That allows you to get one more big time deal, a la Yandle, Ladd, Eriksson.

I can see the Rangers offering, but I don't see Chris signing – and certainly not for those dollars in the mid/out years.

who knows...MZA took a sweetheart deal. Brassard took a sweetheart deal. Guys need to take discounts to keep competitive teams going.

again, im in the tear it down club, but if you could lock up CK for that deal, you do it...and then you can trade him if need be for even better assets down the road.

im personally of the belief, though, that CK is part of the long term solution to this club.

assuming they will regress is just as pointless as assuming he'll hit 50 points next year. it's a risk.

Would 21/5 4.2 AAV work?

I think a 1 year deal could happen, but buying out some of his years makes sense too. Thing is you want to keep his hit manageable and his contract tradeable.

5 years would put him UFA with Stepan in 21/22

Wow ok so 4.2 is not even close.

5 years 24.5 million, 4.9 AAV. If they could swing that. Cant give him 5 per yet... but you may have to go that high to buy three UFA years.

Could also see 4 years 19.5, 4.875 AAV, if they want too much with 5 years.

No, that's actually right in line with what he reported.

Ward's tweet was only about what they submitted to the arbitrator for a 1-2 year determination. Larry's writing about the negotiations for a five year deal which would preempt arbitration.

I keep forgetting about the 1-2 year thing with arbitration numbers leavemealone :cry::cry::cry:

I am not sure, per every year that is too high imo, per UFA year then sure I can see that range.

Feel like they will come to a deal if they are only 500k apart and wanting it to be 4 or 5 years.

In light of Brooks's report, I feel justified in quoting myself. :)

Kreider numbers are a bit lower than I expected. Means he can likely be locked up at under $5M on a longer deal (2 years @ $3.975 + 4 years at ~5,25 M = cap hit of $4.825). They should opt for a longer deal. g.

Hahaha. Some from column A, some from column B. :)

I think we may not be too far off. If memory serves, every time we see a report like this re: ongoing negotiations for an RFA, when the team does in fact sign the player longterm, it usually comes out a LOT closer to the team's bid, rather than the player's ask. Otherwise it generally goes to arbitration.

Could still sign and trade him.

Why make the effort on a long-term deal? I don't see it. In a year from now, or even at the deadline, possibly. But, I agree with inferno, I see Kreider as part of the long term solution for this team. For as much as Kreider drifted along for half the season, once Stepan came back healthy, Kreider surged. Ideally, if Ziba and Buch can reach the potential of being legitimate 1st liners, a 2nd line of Kreider and Stepan going forward looks awfully nice.

They could also be pursuing both options: get Kreider at their price, or failing that, trade him.
