As briefly discussed in the best posts topic I am going to be compiling a player profile for each player in the organization. I will be doing them alphabetically just so it reduces the chances of me missing someone

I will eventually be editing these into the first 3 posts in this thread, I hope that is enough space.

And to start it off I have the first two players done.

When the San Jose Sharks decided to allow their first and only bay area born player in Sena Acolatse to walk as a free agent due to not receiving a qualifying offer it left some Sharks fans scratching their heads and a little upset. Acolatse was a bit of a fan favorite during his time with the Sharks AHL affiliate in Worcester Massachusetts, he earned this badge of honor by being a blue collar defenseman that laid it all on the line for his team. In three professional seasons Acolatse has only played 157 games, missing significant time in his second and third seasons due to injuries caused by playing the style of game that made him a fan favorite. In the end it was likely these injuries that resulted in him not receiving a qualifying offer.

In the second half of the 2012-13 season Acolatse blocked a shot with his face, while he was lucky enough to escape a concussion he missed nearly one third of the season due to a broken jaw. When Acolatse returned to the lineup he appeared to be a bit gun-shy which resulted in his physical game falling off a bit. Late in the 2013-14 season serious injury struck again, this time a blocked shot broke Acolatse's leg and caused him to miss 24 games. He managed to return to the lineup for the Worcester Sharks final 2 games. Over his three seasons with the Sharks AHL affiliate Acolatse amassed 17 goals and 59 points.

The scouting reports indicate that Acolatse is a right handed shot who has a cannon from the point, skates very well and plays a mean physical game. He was projected to max out as a number 4 defenseman but with his injuries he appears to be a long shot to reach his potential. Acolatse will get his opportunities with the Calgary Flames, as he will be one of the most experienced players on the blueline in Adirondack. His hard hitting style will make him a fan favorite in Glens Falls.

Acolatse’s value to the Flames in the long run is difficult to measure, but his immediate value is obvious with the AHL Flames losing Chad Billins, Chris Breen, Brady Lamb, Dean Arsene and Kane LaFranchise he will looked upon as a leader both on and off the ice. Acolatse will likely play on Adirondack’s top pairing with sophomore Tyler Wotherspoon and has a good shot at making his NHL debut as one of only two right handed defensemen in the pipeline for the Flames. At just 23 years of age a strong season could see Acolatse become an important prospect for the rebuilding Flames who have a shortage of defensemen in that age range.

Acquired in what could be regarded as the biggest trade in Calgary Flames history, Ken Agostino was brought on board as a piece of the Jarome Iginla trade. The trade happened a mere days before Agostino faced off in the biggest tournament of his collegiate career, the NCAA Frozen Four. The then left winger for the Yale Bulldogs was a key player in eventual championship win by Yale. In the championship game Agostino was integral in both goals due to excellent defensive plays. Despite winning the NCAA Championship Agostino returned to Yale for his fourth year in order to complete his degree in Political Science.

The 2013-14 season was not as successful for Agostino and the Bulldogs, despite peppering the opposition with shots Agostino finished with only 14 goals and 32 points, his worst offensive season in 3 years. Through his four year college career Agostino scored 56 goals and amassed 76 assists in 134 games. Following the conclusion of Yale’s season Agostino signed with the Calgary Flames and joined the team down the stretch. He appeared in 8 games and got on the scoreboard a couple of times with a goal and an assist.

If he were a baseball player they would refer to Agostino as a five tool player because he can and does do it all and has no area that is considered a weakness. The winger is a very coachable player whose commitment to his team is second to none, everything he does is for the better of the club. Agostino is a bit odd in the sense that he has no single abilities that stand out with the exception of his defensive zone commitment, everything he does is above average with no glaring holes in his game. He has a good shot that he is not afraid to use, his has soft hands and has shown an ability to make tough passes, Agostino skates well and gets physically involved.

The Flames depth on the Left side could force Agostino to move to his off wing, but that should not create much of a problem as he did play a little on his off wing in college. In the short term Agostino will likely join the Adirondack Flames for his rookie AHL season, he will likely be used in a middle six in a two-way capacity. If he is moved to the right side it would not be shocking to see Agostino play opposite either Gaudreau or Baertschi for the majority of the AHL season. Long term Agostino projects to be a high energy do it all type winger, most likely in a third line capacity with an outside shot at becoming a top six forward.

Having spent the past four seasons under the tutelage of Jerry York at Boston College Bill Arnold has managed to make a name for himself as one third of one of the greatest lines in NCAA hockey history. The 2010 fourth round draft choice capped off a very good NCAA career with his best season. In his four year career Arnold played in 159 games for the Eagles and out together some solid career numbers with 58 goals and 86 points. On top of some great individual numbers Arnold was also a member of the teams 2012 Nation Championship.

The senior year is often the most productive for college players, but not too many can boast an improvement of 17 points and posting more assists as a senior than they had for a career high in points heading into the season. But that is just what Arnold did with his 39 assists as a senior. Following a very productive year in college Arnold, along with BC teammate Johnny Gaudreau signed with the Calgary Flames and proceeded to make their NHL debuts on the final night of the NHL’s regular season. Arnold was held off the score sheet but gave the Flames a sample of his faceoff attributes winning 5 of 9 in his debut.

While not an overly large player, Arnold has a thick build and uses it to his benefit. Known primarily for his defensive acumen Arnold has carved a niche for himself and was arguably the best defensive forward in the NCAA in his senior year. In addition to his strong defensive play, Arnold was quite strong on faceoffs as he approached 60% towards the end of his final season. Arnold also is known to quickly jump to the defense of his teammates and was named an alternate captain for the Boston College Eagles.

When thinking of Bill Arnold the fans of the Calgary Flames quickly project their long term hopes that he can have the same impact as Stephane Yelle did in the mid-2000s. As a gritty centerman that can win draws and put the occasional point on the board those fan hopes may not be too far from reality as Arnold grows as a player. In the meantime Arnold will fight for the job as the Flames fourth line center, but ultimately will likely end up with the farm club in Adirondack playing a middle six role as he adjusts to the pro game.

On October 14th, 2014 in the Flames fourth game of the regular season it appears that Mikael Backlund will reach a milestone in his career, assuming things go as planned that night will commemorate Backlund’s 250th NHL game. While 250 games is a relatively small number of games it is a significant milestone for the 25 year old centerman that has faced his share of injury problems. In his 246 games Backlund has produced a modest amount of offense with 41 goals, 60 assists, however it is through his solid defensive play that Backlund has really started making a name for himself.

The 2013-14 season was a breakout season of sorts for Backlund who not only managed to stay healthy, but also started producing some respectable offensive numbers. In his 76 games Backlund came within a sniffing distance of both 20 goals and 40 points, he also shattered his career highs in goals and points. On top of his significantly improved offensive game, Backlund also reached new peaks defensively as Backlund became the Flames top defensive and penalty killing center.

While not overly big Backlund is not afraid to mix it up and get physically involved, his semi-aggressive style combined with his strong defensive attributes and offensive skill makes Backlund a valuable commodity for the Flames. Entering the season it is believed by many that Backlund will begin taking on more of a leadership role and could potentially be named an alternate captain.

The future for Backlund will likely see him as a very good third line center or a lower end second line center, however his long term future with the Flames is not nearly as clear with the depth they have accumulated in their prospect pool. In the short term while Sean Monahan continues to develop in the middle six for the Flames, Sam Bennett gets stronger in the OHL and Mark Jankowski continues his college career; Backlund will fight with Matt Stajan for time as the Flames top centreman.

2013-14 | Abbotsford Heat | AHL | 41 | 13 | 16 | 29 | 18 | 1

Misunderstood is a term that could easily be applied to Sven Baertschi and his development curve. After scoring 3 goals in his first 5 NHL games as an emergency recall and averaging 2 points per game for the Portland Winterhawks the hype train was at full steam, increasing expectations for the 13th overall pick in 2011 to nearly unattainable levels. Unfortunately for Baertschi it wasn’t just the fans buying into the hype, then General Manager Jay Feaster also bought into the hype and guaranteed Baertschi a spot on the roster despite having a poor development camp, rookie camp and main camp, after the dismissal of Feaster the first move made by Brian Burke was to send Baertschi to the Flames AHL affiliate in Abbotsford for the remainder of the season to work on his 200 foot game.

Much like his development path thus far, Baertschi’s 2013-14 season was full of ups and downs. He finished the season with 2 goals and 11 points in 26 games at the NHL level and then another 13 goals and 29 points at the AHL level. During his NHL stint to start the season Baertschi often played with fellow rookie Sean Monahan and veteran Czech winger Jiri Hudler. During this time Baertschi took shifts off and did not stat committed to the play when the puck was not in the offensive zone which resulted in his demotion to the Abbotsford Heat to work on both his consistency and his 200 foot game. Once with Abbotsford Baertschi was tried off on his wing and sputtered offensively, producing a mere 4 points in his first 16 games. Once moved back to his natural left wing the production from Baertschi started picking up with 8 points in 11 games in February, 9 points in 9 games in March and 7 points in 5 games in April. Even more impressive than his overall numbers was the consistent rate at which he produced, putting up at least one point in 18 of 25 games once being moved back to left wing.

There is no denying that Baertschi is an extremely talented forward, he has a very accurate shot and an extremely slick play maker, but there is also no denying that there are concerns with him staying healthy and staying committed in all three zones. Before breaking into the pro ranks Baertschi often received comparisons to Marian Hossa as he often used his strength to out muscle opponents, however while playing in the NHL a better comparison would be former teammate Alex Tanguay as his strength has not translated to the NHL game and he has relied on his excellent passing skills to produce, often looking to pass even when there is a scoring chance.

Entering the final year of his entry level deal it seems that the 2014-15 season appears like it could be a defining season for Baertschi. He will be given every opportunity to make the NHL squad out of camp, but he will be in tough as he will battle several other of the Flames youngsters for a small number of open roster spots. If he cracks the NHL lineup he is projected to play in the third line with either Monahan or Stajan. Long term Baertschi has all the tools to be an effective top six forward and potentially a top line left winger.

The future for Backlund will likely see him as a very good third line center or a lower end second line center

I still disagree with this notion. After he flicked the switch last season, he showed an ability to be an above average second-liner at least. He was better than Kesler, for example.

Kesler has broken down from the injuries and it has made him much less effective, as recent as 2 seasons ago Kesler was an above average second line centre and was putting up 50+ points while being great defensively. Kesler now is a broken down centre that still produces at an average second line level.

Backlund has not reached that level, maybe he will but at 25 that clock is ticking. I am not even sure if I would say Backlund was as good as Kesler this year even.

When did he move up to the top line? I was thinking it was around 30-35 games in and he had about 15 points, at the time?

The switch was flicked 26 games in at the end of that game in LA when he set up Cammy for the winner. He had 8 points (2/6) through his first 25 games. In his remaining 54 games, he had 31 points (16/15). That is a 47 point pace, and at the same time I believe he was facing pretty tough competition and producing great possession numbers, though I'm not too sure how well I'm reading the advanced stats.

2013-14 | Kingston Frontenacs | OHL | 57 | 36 | 55 | 91 | 118 | 34

The first top five draft pick in the history of the Calgary Flames is none other than Samuel Bennett-McDowell, he is better known to hockey fans as Kingston Frontenacs forward Sam Bennett the number one ranked player by NHL central scouting in 2014. In his two seasons in Kingston Bennett has turned some heads, he impressed many with 18 goals and 40 points as a 16 year old rookie and followed that by at least doubling his production in every single offensive category as a sophomore. In his 117 games (so far), Bennett has accumulated 54 goals, 131 points and 205 penalty minutes.

The young power forward is unlikely to make the Flames as an 18 year old and is expected to join the Frontenacs for a third season. Should he return Bennett will be expected to further expand on his production and will be expected to score 50 goals and 120 points for the junior club, as well as lead them to at least the second round of the OHL playoffs. In addition to playing for the Frontenacs it is expected that Bennett will be a key contributor at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, a tournament that may be the most watched WJC event in Canadian history as it is co-hosted by the cities of Toronto and Montreal.

While it may be up to two years before Bennett dons the flaming C, Bennett is expected to be a significant piece of the future in Calgary and form a dynamic center duo with Sean Monahan. Bennett has the tools and potential to be a top line scorer in the NHL someday and looks like he will be a natural goal scorer. With Bennett being more of a natural goal scorer than playmaker it is a distinct possibility that Bennett's game may be better suited as a winger once he reaches the NHL.

At the age of twenty-five Chad Billins would certainly be considered a late bloomer, the small puck moving defenseman just completed his second professional season after spending four years at Ferris State. Over his 149 games with the Ferris State Bulldogs Chad Billins recorded 17 goals and 67 points. In two professional seasons which we split between the Grad Rapids Griffins and the Abbotsford Heat, Billins played 141 regular season games and outscored his college career with 20 goals and 78 points. Billins was a key player in the 2011-12 Ferris State run to the NCAA championship where they lost to Johnny Gaudreau and his Boston College team as well as an integral part of the Griffins 2013 Calder Cup Championship.

In his first season with Flames organization Billins was a primary weapon in the Heat's offensive scheme and led all other Heat defensemen in scoring by a significant margin. His 41 points was good enough for sixth in team scoring and earned him the first NHL action of his career, in 10 games with the big club Billins recorded 3 assists and played well in sheltered minutes.

Billins is pretty close to the definition of a one dimensional defenseman. Standing a mere 5'10" and 174lbs he brings next to no physical game, in addition to the lack of physicality Billins gets so focused on trying to make an offensive play he is prone to bad giveaways and pulling himself out of position. He was most effective when used as the power play specialist and played even strength minutes on the second defensive pairing.

Long term Billins will likely never be more than an injury recall that plays as a power play specialist for the farm club. In the short term Billins has signed with CSKA Moscow and will spend at least one season in the KHL.

120 points for Bennett is a little optimistic (especially when you say he will be expected). He will miss gamesdue to WJC and could get 9 with the Flames. With the reduced games, I'd guess 100 again

I was thinking over a full season, so that would be more a 120 point pace, my bad.

Any idea what happened to Coda Gordon? He's not listed as a prospect on hockeysfuture, and I don't see anything regarding him on capgeek or the Flames website.

The Flames never signed him before June 1st, so he re-entered the draft and went undrafted. He is now a UFA
