When was the last time a deal was made in late September involving significant roster players?

I can't remember one in recent memory, but down to the wire we're more than likely going to see both Boychuk and Oduya move...at least from what it seems like.

20. There was a rumour last week Boston was going to try to extend Johnny Boychuk instead of trading him. The principals would not comment, but my information is that an extension is not being discussed. You can certainly see the rationale. He’s a valuable player as the Bruins ponder life after Chara, which is why it wouldn’t be a surprise if the team does have a conversation with him about this before any trade.

21. At a season-ticket holder event last week, GM Peter Chiarelli was asked about unsigned free agents Torey Krug and Reilly Smith. “It’s my intention to have these players playing for the Bruins,†Chiarelli said. “They’re not going anywhere.†The team’s cap issues are well-documented, which is why it’s believed the Bruins have offered both players a one-year deal in the $1.25 million range. For Krug, that’s a pay cut, especially when you factor in his bonuses. Boston is undoubtedly trying to convince the two this is a one-year thing, but, to this point, that has not worked.

They usually don't, that's why I was certain something would happen at the draft. Hopefully Chia hasn't overplayed his hand..

Holy I forget that was so late, given the mess at the draft...I always think it was around there.

Either way, sort of a different situation given the contract negotiations of Phil at that time.

As long as Caron, Gangne and Vile aren't cut...

Kind of difficult to "cut" someone who doesn't have a contract.

Pastrnak now missing his 3rd day of practice with a bruised shoulder. Might be time to send the kid back to Sodertalje.

yes because the rest of the Bruins are immune to injuries.

There are some legit concerns about his size and whether he's ready for an 82 game campaign in the NHL..

I'm very encouraged and impressed by his skill and work ethic, but I'd still be surprised to see him play regularly this year in the NHL as an 18 year old weighing 165 lbs.

Is Pastrnak now damaged goods?...psychology...will he be able to come back and play his game without thinking about the bruise......honestly hard to tell :)

Personally, think we should keep him around though as long as possible. Just in case it's beneficial for him to be around Bruins invested team physicians and the top level athletes he'll be playing with in the future. Chances it could be helpful, even with such a damaging bruise.

He bruised his shoulder and they are smartly taking their time getting him back on the ice. It hardly seems appropriate to start drawing conclusions about his future based on this. Are we really that desperate to find something negative to harp on?

As for his size and weight, countless other players have played and played well at smaller sizes. Bringing it up like it's some major concern seems like a waste of time. If he's actually good enough, he'll play, whether he could use a few more pounds or not.

You never know, those sort Euro's have retired from less. Didn't Fedorov hang them up after a particularly nasty hangnail?

I wasn't arguing that point at all. My point was that catching an edge and going shoulder first into the boards could happen to anyone. I just think it's ridiculous for someone to say "guess it's time to send him back to Sweden" because he got a bruised shoulder. How bout let's just finish camp before we start making that argument? He's day to day. If he makes it back in time to play a few pre-season games and maybe even get in a few regular season games we'll have a much better picture of how ready he is.

I still don't think his chances are great, but it's just really myopic to take this injury as proof that he's not ready.

I hope he's back soon, I want to see him in game action playing with legit talent... They should play him with Krejci, Spooner, and Soderberg; there's quite a few intriguing pairings with Pastrnak.

The problem is it's not really an injury. Any other player would expected to be out their playing through this. Claude, for his part, seems a little less than enthusiastic about the situation:

So how much will the time he misses affect his chances of making the team?

“I have no idea, you’d have to ask the GM that,†coach Claude Julien said after Monday’s practice.

“No idea. I’ve been told he’s day to day,†Julien said. “So what does that mean? Exactly what they’re saying. It’s not a dislocated shoulder, it’s nothing like that. It’s some sort of a bruised shoulder, so we have to wait and see how it heals.â€

Claude frequently speaks about different prospects' chances of making the team, but here he punts and basically says this is all Chiarelli. Doesn't seem too impressed with the severity of the injury either.

Look, I think Pastrnak was a terrific pick and will be a valuable player for the Bruins someday. But if we have to shelter him so much as to keep him out of practice for a "bruised shoulder," it's probably not his time.

I am guessing Julien and Pastrnak would both have him playing... Chiarelli probably just wants him to play his 9 games and see what's up.

Pastrnak would need three ambulances to pick up the pieces with the roster the Habs have tonight as well.

I know next to nothing about the Hab roster in terms of toughness, but I'll take the HF board's word for it. The fact that Boychuk was playing definitely piqued my interest. Of the four preseason teams we're playing, this one would be the most likely to have some freak accident/fight happen....and that would make him essentially untradeable. Not that Boychuk can't handle his own, but it makes me wonder if Chia's leaning away from trading him.

Or, maybe that's exactly what Chia wants the other GMs to think.

Forget just significant players because there are many that don't believe trades can be made this late period.

If you look at September and October (because Chiarelli said he may wait)

2013-2014: 4 in late Sept, 3 in Oct (including Vanek)
2012-2013: 0 (um, we all know why?)
2011-2012: 2 in late Sept, 7 in Oct
2010-2011: 2 in late Sept, 3 in Oct
2009-2010: 7 in Sept, 5 in Oct
