I'm a huge weather nerd and love storms, but there's something about tornados that have always petrified me. I think it's something about the totally random nature and unpredictability of them.

Being in a tornado is one of my biggest fears.
The fact that Suffolk County was never put under a tornado warning yesterday concerns me greatly. It also makes this event more newsworthy.

This thing hit with literally no warning. 7 miles is way too close for me.

There will be time to discuss what should have been done and what needs to be done going forward. Right now, the focus should be on the cleanup and what needs to be done so the city can get back up and running and the schools are ready for the start of school which is a month away.

Has anyone ever been struck by lightning while driving through a storm? I've heard it's possible even with the rubber tires. Driving home last night I though for sure I was going to get struck, closest I got was watching one hit near a house as I drove by.

I don't think the schools will be an issue. They set up shelter for those affected at Rumney Marsh and I heard that Summer school was actually in session at Revere and Lincoln, but weren't either were not in the 65 buildings affected...but definitely would be good to address the issue of preparation, although most of the time there is very little you can do. By the time alarms don't typically go off until it's touched down and/or at least started funneling somewhere.

National weather service is very good at seeing this stuff, but like in the case of yesterday, these things can appear out of literally no where and touch down very quickly. I don't know what else could have been done truthfully.

I got caught on the turnpike during one. Very very frightening experience & one I hope I never experience again.

Tires aren't really made of rubber any more.

Lightning will strike where it strikes; tires have nothing to do with it. Usually it simply connects with the tallest point in the vicinity (tree, steeple, person standing in an open field).

If you're in a car you're pretty safe, unless you're holding on to exposed metal (and how much of that is in cars nowadays?), because if lightning does hit the car, it's not hitting YOU. You'd be in much more danger of falling tree limbs or bad visibility while driving in a storm.

The weather folks did all they could but Revere is so close to the Essex county border they should have extended the warning into Suffolk County. Hindsight is 20/20

I know they have metal wiring inside but I still figure they'd act as an insulator.

Right, at most it would travel through the body and maybe blow out a tire. I'm sure whoever is inside wouldn't get electrocuted.

I hate just getting static shocks so I try to stay away from thunder storms

I knew a kid in high school that owned an old CJ that was supposedly struck by lightning. He was fine. The wiring and all things electrical in the truck were fried. He sold for parts

I thought the tornado hit around 9:44 and there wasn't even a tornado warning on the storm as of that time. Warning didn't come until closer to 10ish? That's unacceptable. The tornado had already come and gone by the time they warned the storm if I'm remembering correctly.

I know the storms were unpredictable, but I'm still surprised there wasn't a tornado watch at the very least.

Same thing happened a few weeks ago with those nasty storms that were in the area. I was shocked the storm I was watching outside my bedroom window wasn't tornado warned because I could see a small part (upflow? updraft? I don't know tornado terminology off the top of my head) rotating and I've never seen anything like it in my life. Got it on video with the iPad. It would definitely be hard to pick up on if someone didn't know what they were looking for. That storm ended up getting tornado warned just after it moved through Cambridge.

Unfortunately I wasn't in MA yesterday but it sounds like it was so dark, they wouldn't have known what the clouds were doing. And sometimes I suppose it is hard to pick up on radar. But with all the technology available, I still don't understand how there wasn't a tornado watch.

Thank God there weren't any injuries or deaths.

^ Apparently the news people were waiting for the NWS to confirm a tornado was approaching before issuing the warning. It was bizarre. By the time they got the word, it was upon us. Even people driving in it had no idea what was happening. All they said was we had a flood warning, to go along with strong winds, rain and thunder. It all happened so quickly :(

I still cannot believe it happened. Much less an area I'm in all the time. Just crazy.

You are correct.

Here is a great article from Eric Fisher, WBZ's Cheif Meterologist who also worked at the Weather Channel regarding this very topic

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/07/29/revere-tornado-by-the-numbers/

This storm's rotation was first picked up while over Westwood. I had texted my mother when I saw the tweet saying this telling her to be careful as she and dad were at his doctor's appointment and the cell was heading towards them and the city.

This cell is what hit us in the Back Bay and the pictures I took show how low the clouds were as it traveled up the river towards the Zakim and ultimately Revere.

Scary all around and I am so very happy that the outcome wasn't what it could have been.

We all got a lesson in preparedness on Monday.

The one thing I'm really upset with is that because the damage does not equal $6.1 billion the Feds won't provide releif for those who lost everything including a local government building.

Hi, MH33, I wanted to dispel this myth for you. This is from the National Weather Service:

"Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside."

Basically the car becomes a Faraday cage, the lightning travels around the occupants and into the ground. Lightning would have no trouble blowing right through several inches of rubber.
