Vancouver doesn't have a sufficiently long contract to dump.

Myers has 3 years.

Beagle, Roussel, Virtanen, Holtby and Eriksson all have one year.

OEL has 6 years at 8.25 million per year. With a full NMC for the length.

Our longest skater contract is Schmidt, 4 years at 5.95.

OEL has been a hell of a player, but his stats haven't been going anywhere but lower, games played included, and is 30 now, and will be 36 at the end of his contract. OEL is undoubtedly better than our one year cap dumps, and even in decline will still edge out our longer term D, but that contract, if it's not retained heavily, doesn't fit for Vancouver at all. This off season, we have Hughes and Pettersson that need new contracts, next season Boeser, and Miller and Horvat the year after that.

Canucks fans need to think about it this way:
We howl about how bad Myers' contract is, but some of us are willing to take his highly inflated contract, add both length and more than 35% of his AAV, for a comparably aged player. Now add an NMC. We would hate that player just as much, unless it was an Orr or Norris level player. Freeing up cap this year (which if it's one non-Eriksson contract with Myers or Schmidt, isn't much) for more cap hit the next two, and extensively more the following three, is simply not a good idea. Doing it for a top four D isn't enough reason, and really both Myers and Schmidt were top four guys prior to coming here, and their numbers plummeted. The same will happen to OEL.
