Why does Vancouver do this? They're going to move Nate Schmidt and Alex Edler is testing the market. Benning wanted OEL last year before he acquired Schmidt. He's looking for defensemen. This deal actually saves Vancouver 3.75aav in capspace for this season. It gives Benning more flexibility at least for one year to plug some more holes. He's likely on a VERY short-leash, and needs to be thinking shorter-term, rather than longer-term. Vancouver needs to make the playoffs. OEL & 3.75aav cap relief helps a helluva lot more than Antoine Roussel.

Why does Arizona do this? They need to cut cash, plain and simple. This deal represents a $7.2 cash savings in year one, $8.7 cash savings in year two, and a $10.5 cash savings in year three. Then in the final three years, it's a combined $18.5 in cash savings.

It’s crazy to think, but Vancouver ought to still ask for salary retention on top of dumping Eriksson/Beagle/Roussel. A lot more.

The scenario you propose means that Arizona is dumping $50mm in salary commitments while only taking $4.7mm in salary commitments back.

Quoting below a post I’ve made in other OEL trade threads that shows the sheer scale and size of that OEL contract:

You are incorrect to state that those two ideas are incompatible. Let me run the numbers because it seems you haven't. Arizona can still save significant cash owed by retaining salary. They can also spread out the amount of cash owed instead of paying the required lump sum signing bonus in his contract.

Let's take for example a hypothetical trade—let's pretend Arizona is completely desperate and this is the only offer that comes along... worst case scenario stuff...

ARI: Olli Juolevi (let's assume signed $1.00mm x 2y) , Loui Eriksson (to be bought out), Jay Beagle (to be bought out)
VAN: Oliver Ekman-Larson ($2.75mm retained)
Would Arizona still save any money? Even with salary retention and taking on bad contracts? Yes, they would save over $30,000,000 !!! They would only have $19,300,000 in salary committed instead of $50,000,000 committed!

Would Arizona love to save 94% of the cash committment? I'm sure they would. But there isn't a single owner in this league that is going to throw Arizona a life-preserver like that. They are going throw them anchors and they are going to expect Arizona to share the burden of risk for a player with a questionable record and an expensive long-term deal.

For the sake of an argument, if Arizona were to simply buy out OEL's contract this off-season, they would still be on the hook for paying him $35,083,333 total between now and 2032-33. Here's how that would look like versus the hypothetical worst case scenario trade package:

If Arizona simply wants to get out of paying that contract, their break-even point for salary retention in that worst case scenario (versus a buyout) would be retaining as much as $5,375,000—which is of course way beyond the 50% max for salary retention. This is just used to illustrate how enormous that OEL contract is, and how even with A LOT of salary retention involved Arizona stands to save a bunch of money.

Any deal for OEL would have to include Tyler Myers. Canucks would have to send back term and $. OEL is a slightly better D, but is signed for 3 extra years and 2.25 mill more in salary. I think there needs to be a few more moving parts to make this work. Canucks would need to move some salary to make next season work, and then get compensation for taking on the extra years/money.

My offer would be:
OEL
Garland

for
Myers
Rousel or Beagle
2021 2nd
Joulevi or Lind

I get that is far from ideal for AZ, but the Canucks are eventually taking on a 36YO OEL at 8+ mil.

OEL's contract is not manageable without retention. 11 a year is not tenable for him in a cap world and trading our own cap problem contracts back doesn't erase that.

We would just be consolidating our losses into one unmoveable albatross contract and still having to replace the roster spots. Beagle for instance is overpaid, but based on his last playoff performance, he is still a valuable 4th line center.

11 mil stuck in OEL long term is putting way too many eggs in one basket.

OEL has clear and significant negative value and this trade basically dumps him with nothing retained. There's no way any sane GM is taking on OEL under those circumstances.

Garland had a nice season, but is in no way worth the #9, not even close. I do agree that the 2nd and Lind/Joulevi is probably not enough though. I was debating the following before going with what I did:

OEL
Garland

Myers
Rousell
Beagle
2022 conditional 1st (top 10 protected)

Lol nice little Garland slip-in there. He’s not going anywhere unless it’s significant overpayment. Your offer is the complete opposite.

EDIT: still not enough with your most recent reply.

There is a chance Arizona does not trade him. There is absolutely no chance Arizona retains salary on him. No way.

Incidentally, Andre Tourigny already flew to Sweden and met with OEL and spent several hours with him over a couple of days.

Rick Tocchet when he was hired just ignored him and without even talking to him or making as statement decided not to give him the captaincy as the GM publicly assumed would happen. OEL and Tocchet had a toxic relationship from the very beginning. I wouldn’t be surprised if OEL was just waiting him out. Tocchet is a moron.
