Canada Cup/World Cup is a tournament that is played "every few generations", so nobody should it take too seriously, especially not after 2016. North America U23 and Team Europe bulls*its. It's basically worthless tournament that no one cares about but canadians, just like the WJC.

He also played the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament (U18) wich is not under the IIHF umbrella. In addition to that he could also play in continuation of the WJC U20 in the summer. This means he could reach 100 games played this seasons. Thats a pretty insane workload for such a young player.

A Canada Cup is Best-on-best, that's not what I meant. I was just pointing out that the Canada Cup winner does not literally get handed a gold medal for winning.

In 2008 Ilya Kovalchuk went almost the whole tournament without scoring a goal until the last few minutes of the final.

Canada was 4-3 up against Russia when Kovalchuk finally scored his first goal at 54:46. The game went to OT and Kovalchuk scored the game winner at 62:42 going from zero to hero in very short order.

Sweden also had Joel and Henrik Lundqvist twins. Forward and goalie.

Denmark then was absent from the top division (or pool) of WC until 2003. That year they met Canada again and managed a 2-2 tie.

Earlier in the tournament they defeated the USA 5-2. Those were the only points Denmark scored in that tournament. All against North American teams.

If the Canada Cup or its reincarnation the World Cup of Hockey want to be taken seriously internationally then they'll have to become a serious international championship event instead of a North American exhibition tournament. Having good players is only a small part of what makes a tournament successful. A competition always taking place in Canada with Canadian rules and Canadian officials including all the referees gets already the fundamentals of international sports wrong before it even comes to gimmick teams and other such issues.
