I think there are players about as bad as Reaves on every team, but I don’t think it helps a team win games when they play a player every game that almost never is on the ice for goals and is on the ice for a lot more allowed than scored. If Reaves played once every 5 games, it might not be as bad, but I think it’s pretty clear that at least statistically the team is worse because Reaves plays a regular role. And with the intangibles argument, he has one fight. It was against a rookie trying to make a name for himself. He has passed up fighting Wilson and Subban when he would’ve been expected to. Doesn’t seem like he’s doing his job there either.

I am not sure what your definition of forecheck is but if he was really excellent at that, he wouldn't be playing under 10mins a game. Leadership and toughness are import things for a team to have, but its valuable when the guy can play a regular shift and contribute a shift or two on a special team.

There might be value in having him there but Panarin is still pissed off enough to lose his focus and do stupid shit. Come crunch time I bet the Rangers wish they could use that cap space on a player. Why did they move Lemieux?
Because Lemieux is an absolutely horrible teammate for starters and nobody likes him. Well one former Ranger likes him, but let's not go there.

He's everything Reaves is not, actually. He sucks at fighting, low-effort player, and not great in the room.

Reaves is replacement-level defensively which doesn't sound like much, but most 4th liners aren't and Lemieux certainly is not. I think I could score a goal if you iced Brendan Lemieux for the other team. And a lot of that is due to the fact that Reaves at least tries hard to play his role and take a shift and I don't think Lemieux has ever broken a sweat on NHL ice.

I never understood the argument that we could have used the cap on a better player. Who under $2 million is so much better than Reaves?

And even if said player does exist, is it even worth it for the limited time he's playing? 4th liners don't play much because they're either just blehh or absolutely unusable. That's what 4th liners are. Reaves is the former and Lemieux is the latter.

1. Garnet Hathaway. 5 goals this year. Matchup against opposing top lines. Regular on the penalty kill. Signed as a ufa and extended at $1.5m cap hit. Good teammate. Hits. Fights. Thats just one example I know of.

2. I believe what you said about BL

3. There are a lot of good 4th line players that, for instance are penalty kill specialists. But you like Reaves. Ok

School me. What does he bring to the ice? Lets stipulate that he is a great guy in the room.
Besides physically being 4th in the league with hits/60? He brings awareness to players on the other team. I'm not saying the other team will shy away from toughness, but they know he's on the other side. He's been good on the forecheck and he's actually making hockey plays. It's definitely worth a million more than a 4th-line AHL call up.

Lemieux wanted a bigger role and he's not good enough for a bigger role. For the role they're playing on NYR, Ryan Reeves is better. Reeves doesn't need to PK or PP to be effective and contribute.

Ah, so that's what this is about. Ryan Reeves isn't as good as our players. He doesn't contribute like Tom Wilson and isn't as good as our other players like Hathaway. I'm glad you're happy with the players you have. That doesn't mean we can't be currently happy with Reeves. Not every player is available to us despite other fans thinking we have the luxury of getting every player.

I don't understand the people who think having a fourth line wing that hits everything, causes turnovers, makes opposing teams think twice about playing our guys hard, and still puts up around a point every third game is a bad thing.

Reaves has a .23 PPG, not .33.

Uh, if you’re expecting Reaves to be a scorer then you’re not getting it. He’s an asset for what he brings. He lightens the room, he makes the other team think twice about running our guys, and keeps opposing defenders aware going back to get the puck. Those guys have value. No, I don’t want him on my 1st line but he does his job well.

I’m correcting an incorrect assertion.

Reaves has been good.
if reaves has been good and keeps the other team honest than it is money well spent . Anyone who thinks ryan reaves does not act as a deterrent has not played a high level of hockey . if you have ever played and watched a teammate get the crap beat out of him and there is no one on your bench to step up , it is not a good place to be . no one will be rubbing panarin's face in the ice this year

Except Reaves rarely jumps guys or goes after the offender if they're a good player. For example if McDavid took out Panarin, Reaves would chase Kassian or some other player no one cares about. He's not a deterrent

An actual deterrent is Tom Wilson because he plays on the top line and can chase hits against other teams best players

But then McDavid will know it was his fault for his teammate getting his ass beat. You don't wanna be the reason your teammate gets beat up.

given only 1 year and cap hit below $2M not sure how anyone could be too up in arms here. Most of his salary could be burried if his short comings start being worse than the benefits he brings.

Blais got injured by a Subban slew foot, and Reaves made a lot of excuses in the media when asked why he didn’t go after him.

1. The poster said around every 3rd game. At that point Reeves had 6 points. 1 more point would make it accurate, but again, the poster said "around".
2. You came here 5 games after it was posted to correct the poster. At the time, Reeves had 21 games, not 26.
Stop being you.

Mostly bc that one wasn't a slewfoot. Dont get me wrong, the others are SFs, but the Blais one is not. RRs lined up across from him after that and nothing happened. It would have if it were.
