In the past the media ran the team so yes.
That's one way to look at it.
One other way, for a sub-section of Leafs fans, is to believe in magic thought: "Let's concentrate and force him by the power of our minds to sign a cheapstake contract and then show how great a player he is."
You are not part of that sub-section, even if you're tempted to be once in a while.
Then you're a reasonable fan.
Unfortunately, not all Leafs fans are like you.
They will sing his praises even before the puck drops.

Nylander is worth $6-$6.5 based on his comparables, that's not cheapskating, it's looking at his results and seeing that there are some guys who have recently signed in an extremely similar boat who have just signed, giving us terrific precedent to work from...there is so little guesswork in this scenario
if he outperforms that in the future, great, but its not imperative on the Leafs organization to speculate that he will
