Can someone give me a comparable to Gusev skating wise? From what I’ve read, he isn’t really fast but has high end edge work. Who does this compare to on the team or league wide? Nico?

From what I can tell, top end speed is maybe a gear below Bratt but he doesn't need it due to the quickness he changes directions. He slows the play down in the offensive zone for sure.

I actually like this setup. Simmonds can be a deterrent for anyone thinking of taking liberties with Hughes. Little weak defensively, but that line can get a lot of OZ starts. Actually, after watching this video it looks like Bratt and Zacha had a lot of chemistry last year.

edit - also pretty funny the song is Somewhere I Belong when everyone is debating where PZ fits in

They couldn't find audio of Cangy losing his mind on that last goal of the vid? They had the underwhelming Panthers play-by-play instead? good lord....

Much like Hughes, they have a top end speed of an older Colin White, our pirate, not Ottawa's young guy.

Really interesting watching Gusev skate. It doesn't appear that his top speed is the issue.... He glides A LOT but is making plays while doing so. When he gets going it's not like he's "slow" and I think it will look faster on the smaller rink.

Hopefully his first step gets him up to speed quickly, which I think it does, because he may need to glide more on the smaller NHL rink.

Since he leans so far forward when he skates, he’s easier to bump around when getting up to speed than someone who skates more vertically. On the big rink he may have more time to skate freely and get up to speed far away from the net and then glide into dangerous areas but I have only seen highlights so I don’t know if that’s how he normally attacked in the KHL.

Yeah the only thing that worries me is that the defense in the KHL is dreadful. Some of those things if he tried here he would get his clock cleaned.

As far as I know, none of the reports said he was slow. They just said his speed isn't elite.

Anyone know what his linemates were like in Russia? I think I'd like to replicate that combination as closely as possible using the players we have on our team.

Not particularly noteworthy speed but he does appear to display above average shiftiness with the puck

Gusev is clearly making the effort. Hopefully it pays off and his transition to North America is quick. At some point he will have to make the on ice adjustment. Hopefully he gets here sooner than later to start that process.

I believe he said he's coming over at the end of this month

Well he IS a professional athlete and presumably knows how to behave responsibly as such. He's just been doing it on a different continent.

That workout looked like a lot more than just a responsible professional effort. That looks like hard work even for professional athletes. I give those guys lots of credit if they are training that hard.

We've only seen a few videos of pros training (Jagr with the weighted vest, MarJo running while attached to a parachute, etc) and they all seem rather... umm.. above and beyond. Perhaps no-one would bother videoing it if wasn't.
