And the season has begun (unofficially)

Slight increase, for both windows, over last seasons TNT preseason double-header.

I'd say a positive since last year was the debut telecast of the "NHL on TNT" so had a little hype behind it and this year was just normal preseason hockey with no real promotion.

Agreed, but it wasn't without lack of effort. ESPN pushed hockey throughout the night on it's socials. More tweets about the 2 games than baseball.

Didn't help Dodgers and Yankees opened up their series on Rangers/Kings opening night.
Yea NHL got unlucky that the lockout pushed the playoffs back a few days. Numbers might have been better if DS was further along with some eliminations possibly.

If only the NHL could have predicted that before they finalized the schedule! :sarcasm:

Well, if Bruins vs. Caps, then Avs vs. Golden Knights ratings also prove to be down on TNT last night, then we're in trouble, as those cities had no baseball teams in the playoffs, so no excuses

We'll see those ratings later today, i guess.

Tick, tick, tick...

In all seriousness I would expect them to be down slightly as the curiosity factor of a new broadcaster isn’t there.

If the posters on this board are too slow, feel free to provide them yourself. We have access to the same internet

Hmmm...miscommuication, perhaps.

It seems you thought I was begging posters here to post the ratings ASAP. I was only trying to be funny with the"tick, tick, tick..." comment, and not tapping my feet hoping you guys would post the info ASAP without my making any effort to research it on my own.

In fact, I am grateful to those posting ratings, and usually give the posts a "like."

Tuesday’s Lightning-Rangers NHL Opening Night game averaged a 0.43 rating and 744,000 viewers on ESPN, down more than 20% from Penguins-Lightning last year, which marked the NHL’s return to ESPN after an 18-year absence (0.56, ~983K). The 0.43 rating is the lowest for the first game of the season in three years, since Capitals-Blues drew a 0.42 on NBCSN in 2019. (The January 2021 season opener, Flyers-Penguins on NBCSN, had a 0.48.)

Viewership also declined sharply for the Golden Knights-Kings nightcap, which averaged 556,000.

The downward trend continued into Wednesday night, when TNT averaged a 0.36 and 629,000 for Capitals-Bruins — down double-digits from last year’s Rangers-Capitals game (0.44, ~817K). The Blackhawks-Avalanche nightcap (526K) technically posted a 1% increase, but that is based on last year’s undercounted audience for the same matchup (~522K).

24NHL REGULAR SEASON L: LOS ANGELES/NASHVILLEESPN9:41 PM1630.14339
22NHL REGULAR SEASON L: PHILADELPHIA/TAMPA BAYESPN7:00 PM1610.15494

Not great numbers but also not terrible considering Philly had Phillies NLCS and Sixers opener to compete with. And national games involving the Kings generally do worse than 339k.

Compared to ESPN's 18 games last season the Philadelphia-Tampa Bay game would have been the 6th most watched and the Los Angeles-Nashville game would have been the 11th most watched.

That’s not a bad number for a 10pm start. NHL late games typically do worse than that. All things considered those were both ok numbers.

Not great numbers, however, given the stiff competition around the different leagues, keeping above 300k is good. Hope the numbers trend upwards as the season continues

Terrible numbers. Love how some of you try to sugarcoat these abysmal ratings.
Terrible numbers compared to what numbers? As a quick reminder the league averaged 460K viewers last year across ABC, ESPN and TNT for regular season. Up from 391K the year before on NBCSN/NBC. The larger numbers as we know comes from the playoffs. The NHL averaged close to 1.5 million viewers per game and 4.59 viewers for the finals. The 460K average comes from 859K for 10 games on ABC, 461K for 18 games on ESPN and 361K for TNT for 51 games. (ESPN is adding more games this year to over 50 regular season games including 16 on ABC). The point being it is very typical to have some games in the 300K range or lower. Because of the expanded number of games on ABC the league should get close to a 500K average for regular season games this year. No need to be alarmed when some games come in lower throughout the year.
