Not great numbers, however, given the stiff competition around the different leagues, keeping above 300k is good. Hope the numbers trend upwards as the season continues
The late game numbers are fine. Those usually hover around the 300k mark or lower.

The 7pm games should be getting more than that though.

Then again, they both featured Philly, so maybe thats it.

That definitely contributes to it, especially since the Phillies are in the CS. I expect the numbers to improve as the season progresses

My guess the league/espn/tnt loaded up Flyers early for national tv because they expected them to be bad and hope early would be before a bad team drops off. Both those games just happened to be against the Phillies in game 1 or 2 of the NLCS.

It obviously has an effective. All the leagues pretty much pull fans from the same pool of people.

Tuesday’s Flyers-Lightning NHL regular season game averaged a 0.28 rating and 494,000 viewers on ESPN and Flyers-Panthers the following night a 0.20 and 338,000 on TNT, both down double-digits from last year’s equivalent games. In the respective nightcaps, Kings-Predators drew 339,000 viewers and Blues-Kraken 300,000. Six of seven NHL games on national TV this season have posted a decline in both ratings and viewership.

Just seems like some super bad luck for the NHL to start this year. Rangers and Kings on opening night went up against the Yankee and Dodger playoff games during the same time slot, plus a surprisingly good start for the Flyers goes up against the team of destiny Phillies. Tough luck

Well the Rangers/Kings opening night thing wasn’t bad luck. The league basically knew they would be up against those games when they set the schedule.

Good. The NHL product is terrible now. Why would I watch 3 hours of bad ads.

The NHL announced their TV schedule in early September, idk how they could have predicted the Yankees and the Dodgers would both be still playing AND that their games would happen to coincide with the opening night games of their cities respective NHL teams. Seem like tough luck to me

Both teams were like 10+ games up in their respective divisions and pretty solidly set for a bye by late June/July by the time the NHL finalized the schedule. They also knew the Division Series was starting that Tuesday with both leagues starting that day. Anyone who knows anything about baseball playoff scheduling knows the Yankees and Dodgers get primetime. It could have been fully anticipated.

Something seems off because the game didn’t take 42 minutes to play.

But yea, Sunday afternoon against the late Sunday NFL game is the death timeslot for anything else. But these are games that otherwise would be ESPN+ exclusives.
I thought the same thing but on that top 150 there is nothing more hockey related so it's probably a typo

Great to reach #4 in the demo but 0.25 shows how empty the night was sports wise

An empty sports night makes a difference.

100%.

Still some positive context:

- Most viewed game so far this season.
- 3rd most viewed ESPN regular season game since the start of last season. Trailing only last seasons opening night doubleheader.
- 5th most viewed Cable regular season game since the start of last season (Winter classic, aforementioned ESPN opening night doubleheader and TNT's regular season debut broadcast.)
- 11th most viewed regular season game since the start of last season (the four on Cable mentioned above plus six ABC games/5 Saturday plus Black Friday.)

edit: typo.

I look at it as a positive sign that when the World Series is over and especially when the NFL season is over that the NHL is capable of producing some really solid numbers. The dream would be to get some marquee matchups over the 1 million number for non outdoor/special event games, however, getting consistently over 700k for eastern games, I’d take that in a heartbeat

One thing I’ve noticed is at least early in the season (I haven’t looked at the schedule later) is the league scheduled teams to be both on ESPN and TNT in a week. Last week Philly played Tampa on ESPN and then Florida on TNT the next night. Rangers played on ESPN last night and then are playing the Isles on TNT tonight. The Ducks were on ESPN Sunday and TNT tonight. Next week the Penguins are also on ESPN Tuesday and then TNT Wednesday.

That has to be a deliberate strategy to cross promote and try to get audience carry over to both outlets.
