Continuing with the potential name.

Could the team be Nevada based instead of Las Vegas, a bit like Coyotes ?

I think it could change the potential bassin of names.

In this case I don't think there's any advantage to naming it "Nevada." The team is cashing in (no pun intended) on the Las Vegas image and media draw, so going with "Nevada" would only sabotage that effort.

The Coyotes only switched to "Arizona" because the city of Glendale was pissed off about the team being named "Phoenix" when it wasn't in the city of Phoenix proper. They already had to deal with the fact that their crown jewel football stadium got "University of Phoenix" title sponsorship for a decade.

Foley floated the idea of the team being called Nevada instead of Las Vegas prior to or shortly after the beginning of the ticket drive. There was an uproar the likes of which I haven't seen in a while.

There's a pretty strong rivalry/dislike between Las Vegas and Reno, Southern Nevada vs Northern Nevada, etc. That idea was pretty much shut down, with Foley admitting it was a mistake to even suggest it. If the powers that be get freaked out by it, it may be an issue. The team won't actually be in Las Vegas, but rather the unincorporated city of Paradise.

I don't see the city freaking out over it, though.

Local news story regarding the arena and locker rooms. Foley mentions Black Knights idea again as well.

Yeah, looks great.... and Foley there with that Sword In The Stone parable huh?.... KLAS wouldve been better off sending George Knapp down there to cover that story, arenas progress etc. Clearly some kinda witchcraft, sorcery, paranormal activity going on. :squint:

Well, doing my own investigative work, and based on the location of the locker room, it looks like Vegas will shoot twice towards the P6 side of the arena.

As a native Nevadan let me explain this the best I can...

Northern California HATES Southern California and vice versa in sports and in some lifestyle aspects as well.

It is almost the exact same thing for Northern and Southern Nevada. Mainly Reno vs Las Vegas. So I could see as the team being located in Las Vegas not being popular to be called "Nevada" as it would include a northerner like myself.

I'll tell a little story that is somewhat off topic. The "University of Nevada, Reno" was originally called the "University of Nevada." Then Las Vegas opened a University called the "University of Nevada Southern." They changed the name to the "University of Nevada, Las Vegas" and Nevada, begrudgingly changed their name as well. But it is still referred to as Nevada and nothing more. So even when something as simple as a name of a college riles people up it is easy to see why the hockey team name of Las Vegas vs Nevada fired up the locals.

Also the FUNLV and FUNR shirts have existed since before I was born.

^^^ Well, the excitements almost palpable, you can feel it as each stage of completion gets done. I must admit I for one very skeptical of Vegas & have been for years. But hey, its worth a shot, theres a lot of potentially very interesting & innovative cross-promotional & marketing opportunities not only just for the team but league wide. And while dismissed by some, a franchise in LV strengthens Arizona & Dallas along with LA & Anaheim, even Colorado to some degree.

I didn't wanted to start a Nevada war guys ;)

I just feel that Las Vegas ''something'' the something is inevitably be linked to gambling/casinos/card games.

If you take Nevada, then you can possible go grand canyon theme, general history theme and so on.

Just like with the Coyotes, I think personally that Arizona Coyotes sound better than Phoenix Coyotes and represents the fact that the animal is present throughout the state and not only in Phoenix area.

Someone mentioned social media in a previous thread. Seriously, internet can be nasty when looking for a name and there is a few examples of a naming contest going nasty.

As a Nevadan I personally hope for Aces, Jokers, Bones, and maybe just Knights without the Black so not to be associated with Chicago. I know still some with LA but w/e.

Honestly anything that has to do with wildlife doesn't sound great with Vegas as the title. Wolves, Diamondbacks, Silverbacks, and so on.

I'd say it's mostly a college thing, at least down here. It sounds like one of those cruddy things to say, but Las Vegans in general don't think of Northern Nevada much outside of UNLV/UNR and maybe a little bit when the legislature is in session and giving more money to Northern Nevada that it deserves, but that's only every other year.

Other than that, it's just personal identity. We don't share much in common with the northern part of the state other than being located within the boundaries of Nevada. Whenever anyone asks where I'm from, the answer is always Las Vegas and I've run into some people from here while on vacation and they always say they're from Las Vegas. I don't know anyone here that would identify themselves as a Nevadan instead of a Las Vegan. It does seem to be the opposite for other states, though. I have friends from Phoenix, and they'll almost always say they're from Arizona versus Phoenix. Same thing for Texas.

It's likely a symptom of being from a large city with worldwide recognition, even people from Henderson (the second largest city in Nevada and a suburb of LV) will identify themselves as living in Las Vegas.

Wait, Paradise? They're playing in Paradise, and there's even a question about naming the team for Vegas?

That's it, they have to name the team the Paradise Lost. The marketing campaign can be "Do you have your two tickets to Paradise?", and Eddie Money can be the anthem singer. I don't think he has a lot going on right now.

There, that's all sorted now. :p:

But that "college thing" involves sports fans, and given this is a sports topic it isn't surprising to see that the response Foley received when floating the idea was met with such resistance.

 Paradise is a fake place though. Las Vegas is kind of like New York City, in that the metro area is made up of a lot of lower level governmental organizations that constitute the whole of the "city." There's the City of Las Vegas, and then there's Paradise, Winchester, Enterprise, Sunrise Manor, Whitney, Summerlin South, etc. Yet, everyone's mail says Las Vegas and unless you're in CLV, NLV, or Henderson, you actually live in Clark County. Having the Clark County Sheriffs Department and the Las Vegas Police Department merged into one entity a long time ago makes it even more fun. Laughlin, NV, 90 miles south of Las Vegas is patrolled by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

It's actually kind of a mess.

In my mind, Las Vegas brings to mind images of glitz, glamour, money while Nevada brings to mind images of deserts and mining and cowboys. Certainly, the first fits more what I want to see associated with a sports team than the latter does.

I drove from Vegas to Kingman in 1987 and it was pretty and from Hoover Dam on there wasn't much of anything. We stopped at a general store that had a small bar and they were watching a NHL playoff game on the satellite,

It's hard to take Reno seriously in debates like that. Like I don't have very strong pride for my city, my heart stayed in California when I left, but any objective observer could make the conclusion that Vegas>>>Reno in every respect but its proximity to Lake Tahoe and being a more subdued atmosphere.

It's like an Oilers fan trying to butt heads with a Blackhawks fan over which team is better. One side is simply being moronic and the other being left with no option but to laugh.

I mean it isn't a NorCal vs SoCal kind of rivalry where both sides have their pros and cons.

The problem is I don't think the league or Foley's group want an obvious connection to gambling since that to many is one of the things that hindered a professional team of any kind from coming to Vegas. I mean sure, there were other factors but that was a big one.

My perception having visited the state several times.

Sportsfans in Reno are more likely to cheer for a team in Miami than one in Las Vegas.

If you take away Las Vegas and Reno you are left with nothing as Nevada is as desolate as you can get in the US.

Could it be argued though that people in Reno have never had a professional team to latch onto before

It is possible some in Reno if watching LV team is option would latch onto them as a team to cheer for

I suppose it might also not hurt if a Vegas NHL team decided to put their AHL affiliate in Reno along with the recently created California division, though they'd need a viable arena in that market.

Obviously, due to the distance, I doubt that they'd expect many, if any, drive-ins from Reno folks for a game in Vegas, but a Vegas NHL team would assuredly want the broadcasting rights to the entirety of their state (and bleedover into other states). As Fenway said, there's really nothing outside the immediate Las Vegas metro area and the Reno metro area.
