Garbage return for Tampa on the McDonagh trade but I guess the cap space was more important. Seems like a dumb move if they keep Killorn.

Not sure about the second player, but if the main asset going back for McDonagh is Philippe Myers…. Yikes. Myers is now on either his third or fourth franchise in the past 13 months, depending on how you view Nashville loaning him to the Toronto Marlies instead of their own AHL affiliate after he cleared waivers. I remember a lot of Flyers fans hyping him up a few years ago, but his development went sideways and he never really emerged beyond being a sheltered 3rd pairing guy, and he seemed to have regressed in Nashville.
Some crazy shit going on with Ivan Fedotov, who is a Flyers prospect who just signed with them and tried to leave Russia but was detained. Hope the kid is alright.

Cap space is becoming increasingly expensive in the current flat cap era. Few teams were willing to help Tampa last year with the Johnson contract, I’m not surprised they had to unload McDonagh at a discount.

Mike Grier as sharks GM is a bit odd to me. As a player at least, grit and work ethic come to mind. Those are certainly admiral qualities but not sure they make you a good GM.
To be fair, there's a pretty small correlation between talent as a player and talent as a GM.

Dude was a Blackhawk’s scout, then a Devil‘s Assistant, and most recently advisor for the Rangers Hockey Ops.
Sounds to me like the hard work after his playing career paid off. Very admirable from my view. He may end up sucking I guess, but he put in the work. (Over a decade‘s worth since his playing career ended.)

The Letang contract is great for Pittsburgh. They have a few years left in Crosby's career to compete for the Cup and losing Letang would have been a dagger. The low AAV is more important than the term.
Washington needs to have a similar mindset when it comes to targeting a center this offseason. Who cares about the length of a JT Miller contract extension, for example? Washington is only going to be competitive for a few more years so make the most of those years and don't worry about the remainder.

Would it be better if it was 4 years x $9M per? He’s not going to finish that contract on the ice in Pittsburgh anyway, he’ll either be on LTIRetirement or traded with an asset to a cap floor team. It’ll also be easier to trade him with a lower cap hit. This feels like a great deal with Pittsburgh unless Letang falls apart right away.
Now now, no need for a player like Miller… we’ll have Backstrom’s unused cap space to keep us warm this winter.
I will be pretty damn pissed if they really do nothing because Nick may come back at some point, maybe. The Lightning have been to the Cup three years in a row and just said goodbye to McDonagh who was a warrior for them so they could manage their cap. Ice the best team now and figure out the cap later like every other team that wants to compete has done.

Why? As each of the old guard retires, their cap hit becomes available, allowing us the room to replace them with a shiny new toy. $9.2m might get us something better than a hobbled Backstrom. $9.5m will probably be able to buy a lot to replace what's left of Ovechkin. Same with Oshie and whoever else. And along the way the cap goes up and we're allowed to trade for and draft people.
This team only has to drop out of the playoffs if those transitions are handled poorly. This is a year where the team has a chance to breathe a lot of new life into the ranks, and we mostly agree on how they should go about doing that and how sweeping some of those changes could be if handled correctly. And it doesn't have to stop there. There's room for tinkering and turnover every year. This idea that we're gonna be suck after Ovi retires can be bullshit if our front office does their job.
