Halfway Report; Avs Exceeding Expectations

Colorado sits 9th in West after 41 games

mueller_peter_courtesy_381.jpg

Peter Mueller has had a solid comeback season, with 19 goals after 41 games.

The Colorado Avalanche sit 9th in the Western Conference after 41 games, something GM Little Jacob wasn't expecting. "It's awesome to see the boys doing great. Experts had us bottom 5 in the league, so it's nice to silence them". 3 players - center Paul Stastny, winger Peter Mueller, and goalie Semyon Varlamov - have been the key cogs in this surprising turnaround. Stastny sits 3rd in NHL scoring with 42 points at the split. Mueller has had a great comeback campaign, with 19 goals, 5th in the League. Varlamov has provided a sterling 17-15-2 record, his 17 wins being 3rd in the NHL. "Paul and Peter are the 2 straws that stir the drink" Jacob said. "Without them, we'd be in ruins. Paul is top 5 in League scoring, and Peter is having a career year after a concussion last season. It's great to see them succeed". Jacob also talked about Varlamov. "Semyon has also had tremendous success. Everyone said our goalies were a huge question mark, but obviously not anymore. Semyon is also young, so this isn't the best we'll see of him". Jacob also touched base on the other members of the team. "Our other guys like Erik Johnson have been solid" he said. "However, it would be nice to see them step up a bit more, then we will be even better". Here are some stats at the halfway mark.

Trade Deadline 2012

Snoozefest Sees Just 4 Deals Go Down; Avs Fail To Acquire Coburn

coburn_hitsruipp.jpg

The Colorado Avalanche were rumored to be interested in Flyers defenceman Braydon Coburn.

It's a day many people cancel work and school to watch. The trade deadline, which is the last day of wheeling and dealing for the NHL season, failed miserably to deliver this year, with just 4 deals going down. The biggest name to move was defenceman Jamie McBain. The Colorado Avalanche were rumored to be interested in Philadelphia Flyers blueliner Braydon Coburn. However, no deal went down. The Avs did make one trade, sending center Mark Olver, as well as their 2012 3rd and 6th round picks to the Chicago Blackhawks, with youngsters Nick Leddy and Brandon Pirri coming to Denver. Here is a summary of the day's events.

10 AM: No trades.

11 AM: No trades.

12 PM: Montreal Canadiens acquire defenceman Jamie McBain from the Carolina Hurricanes for defencemen Nathan Beaulieu and Yannick Weber.

New Jersey Devils acquire a 2013 2nd round pick (LA) from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenceman Matt Taormina and a 2012 2nd round pick (NJ).

Tampa Bay Lightning acquire left winger Daniel Paille and center Greg Campbell from the Boston Bruins for right winger Ryan Shannon, defenceman Mike Kostka, and a 2012 4th round pick (TB).

1 PM: Colorado Avalanche acquire defenceman Nick Leddy and center Brandon Pirri from the Chicago Blackhawks for center Mark Olver and 2012 3rd and 6th round picks (Both COL).

Avs Officially Eliminated From Playoffs

With 1 game remaining, Avs no longer in playoff race

The Colorado Avalanche were officially eliminated from a playoff berth, with a loss on Tuesday. "It sucks, to be in contention all season, then fall off at the very end" said center Paul Stastny. "But I'm so proud of the boys. We were picked to be bottom 5 in the league. Look at us now". GM Little Jacob also weighed in. "I'm so proud. This team exceeded everybody's expectations. I couldn't be happier". The Avs close out their season in Nashville, facing the Predators.

The Colorado Avalanche would like to congratulate the Detroit Red Wings on their thrilling Stanley Cup win! The Red Wings met with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the third time in 5 seasons. 2012 NHL Entry Draft

230px-Stastny2.jpg

Star center Paul Stastny was dealt out of Denver in a blockbuster deal.

Today was the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The draft was held in Pittsburgh at the Consol Energy Centre, home of the Penguins. With the 1st overall pick, the Winnipeg Jets took blueliner Craig Duinick. The Colorado Avalanche held the 21st overall pick, as their original pick (11th overall) went to the Washington Capitals as part of the Semyon Varlamov trade. With the 21st pick, the Avs took winger Simon Tardif-Richard from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. With the 2nd rounder they acquired from Dallas in the Steve Downie deal, the Avalanche took center Garrett Hooey from the OHL's Sarnia Sting. With their last pick, 131st overall, the Avs selected Czech blueliner Daniel Krejci. However, the story of the draft was not the selections, but a blockbuster deal made by the Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues. Paul Stastny, arguably the Avs' best forward and leading scorer, was dealt to the Blues in a shocking deal. These are the 2 teams that made the Erik Johnson-Chris Stewart trade last season. Coming to Denver is young sniper Jaden Schwartz, and the Blues' 2013 1st round pick. "This was a hard trade to make" GM Little Jacob said. "Paul was our best forward, our star center. However, we feel Matt (Duchene) and Ryan (O'Reilly) will give us a formidable 1-2 punch up the middle for years to come". Here is a summary of the Avs' pick, and the trade.

Colorado Avalanche 2012 Draft Picks

Round 1, 21st overall: Simon Tardif-Richard, RW (66 B B B-)

Round 2, 32nd overall: Garrett Hooey, C (69 B- B- A)

Round 5, 131st overall: Daniel Krejci, D (71 C B- C)

To Avalanche
Jaden Schwartz, LW
STL 2013 1st Round Pick

To Blues
Paul Stastny, C

The Regina Falcons faced the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 2020 playoffs. Despite taking a commanding 3-1 series lead, the Falcons failed to close out the series early as the Avalanche managed to force a game 7. This time however, the Falcons' goaltending held the fort as the Falcons managed to get past the first round after three previous failures. In the second round, they faced the Los Angeles Kings. Once again, the Falcons jumped to a 3-1 series lead, and this time around they managed to dispose of the Kings in five games. In the Conference Finals, the Falcons faced the President Trophy winners, the Edmonton Oilers. All season long, the Falcons had trouble handling the Oilers, and their fortunes would not improve in the playoffs. The Oilers steamrolled the Falcons and carried their momentum towards a Stanley Cup victory.

Despite the disappointing loss, the Falcons managed to get over the hump and get past the first two rounds of the playoffs. Calder Brooks had a career season, securing the Art Ross, the Hart, and the Ted Lindsay trophies. Jonathan Toews shared the Rocket Richard trophy with Lars Eller, while also capturing the Lady Byng trophy. This will be a critical off-season for the Falcons, as their window to win a cup is rapidly closing. Next summer, the contracts for Johnathan Toews, Chris Stewart, Teuvo Teravainen, Arturri Lehkonen and Mark Stuart will expire and they will all become free agents. The Falcons' prospect pool seems to lack high impact prospects that could possibly replace all the talent that they are likely to lose.

Crawford says he's ready for another shot at the NHL
After missing the playoffs for the 3rd straight season, the Brampton Knights have hired Marc Crawford as their new bench boss. Crawford is ecstatic to have another opportunity at the NHL level and says he won't dissapoint. "This is a young and quick team, I see a lot of potential in these guys" Crawford remarked, "I wouldn't be surprised if we make a playoff push in the very near future."

Knights take towering Jensen 10th Overall
Brampton Daily - Wednesday, June 23rd, 2015
EE-JENSEN%2022421.JPG

Jensen is happy to be picked by a team with so many prospects from his neck of the woods.
With the 10th overall selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Brampton Knights took 6'4 193lb Spenser Jensen of the Medicine Hat Tigers. The lanky defenseman put on a show last season in the WHL, giving the Tigers their first Memorial Cup debut in over a decade. Jensen told reporters later in the day, "I'm extremely excited to play with some of the big names around my age and some guys that I've played with and against in the past." Knights GM Tyler Bennett stated, "Jensen provides a great offensive game along with great defensive awareness and good puck movement." The Knights theen took another WHL defenseman at 28th overall, selecting Arvin Atwal from the Vancouver Giants. Atwal had a breakout season last year and really worked on his defensive game to balance out his playing style.

Long Time Knight Weiss Traded Along with Rookie
Brampton Daily - Wednesday, July 1st, 2015
ept_sports_nhl_experts-313897585-1286714931.jpg

Weiss thanks fans for all the great years and the best of luck moving forward.
Knights GM Tyler Bennett continues to wheel and deal, and this time he's forced to give up a long time fan favorite. The Knights announced VIA their twitter feed earlier today that Stephen Weiss and Vincent Trocheck had been dealt to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Lee Stempniak and Calgary's 2020 1st Round pick. That 2020 pick is a toss up, because who really knows where Calgary will finish in 5 years time. "It's a gamble, but it's a gamble that we are willing to take." Bennett told media this morning. This trade does free up space for Kohl Bauml to make the roster.

Bennett Trades up to 1st Overall to select Wes Sutherby
Brampton Daily - Tuesday, June 23rd, 2016
ept_sports_juniorhockey_experts-362564423-1292028042.jpg

Sutherby has many comparisons to Mike Richards
Knights GM Tyler Bennett sent both Kris Versteeg and Cam Gaunce to Edmonton in exchange for the 1st overall pick. With no doubt, the Knights selected from the Brampton Battalion, RW Wes Sutherby. Sutherby grew up in Markham, Ontario, just a few hours outside of Brampton, and even played for the hometown junior team in his 2 year stay with the Battalion. It was a no brainer for Bennett to select him. "He is in our mind, the best prospect since Nathan Mackinnon." A pretty bold statement by Bennett, but not many would complain. Sutherby destroyed the OHL this year, taking home almost every piece of hardware the league had. Central Scout Jim Rutherford tells us about why Sutherby is so valuable. "Not only is Sutherby a scoring dynamo, he also can play very well in his own end of the rink, plus his athleticism is unmatched in all of the CHL." Sutherby flies into Brampton from the draft in St.Louis later this week.

Bauml Takes Home Calder At NHL Awards
Kohl Bauml Took home the Calder Memorial Trophy last night at the NHL awards. Kohl led the Brampton Knights in goals with 29 and finished with 55 points on the season. This is the second straight year in which a Brampton Knight has taken home the Calder, as Jonathon Huberdeau took the Calder last year. "It's awesome," Bauml told the media, "I'd like to thank my teammates and the rest of the Knights organization, and of course my Mom and Dad, couldn't do it without them."

Islanders make a shock move in draft, trade Streit to Rangers

New York Islander started their draft day with a shocking move when dealing alternate captain and the best defenseman in organization to rivalry-team New York Rangers. Islanders get Rangers' 1st round draft picks in 2012 and 2013 in trade. Rangers' 2012 1st round pick is 18th overall in this draft.

streit_6.jpg

Mark Streit has been traded to Rangers

"This was the hardest decision what I have ever made, absolutely. Mark is an amazing player, amazing person. It was so great to had this success with him last season, but in the end of the day, this is business. The way how example Chris Tanev and Andrew MacDonald played in playoffs this year we could move Mark. If I wouldn't be sure that we have guys to fill Mark's role, I wouldn't do this deal. Period. Now we got two 1st rounders and we didn't have our next year's anymore, so this was a good price for Mark. Rangers' offer came out nowhere. I didn't expect this", said Anatsu Southfield about trading Streit.

"Only thing what I can say to Mark is 'thank you', and even that's not enough", he ended

25th in League

The New York Islanders are already on a rocky road, with only 25 games being played. The Isles are 10-13-2, being 15 in the Eastern Conference. Fortunately, the Isles can catch up to 8th place since all the teams are close in points. Josh Bailey is the leading scorer on the Islanders, having 24 points. (12 goals and 12 assists) Kyle Okposo is also the leading point producer, having 24 points. (9 goals and 15 assists) "I know we can do better. We have a good enough team right now that we could be in the playoffs. If we can't pull it together, expect some major changes very soon," says the Isles GM. The Islanders goalies have a part to be blamed, as Rick Dipietro has a 89.6sv% and has a 3.17G.A.A. "I've let my team down, and they know it," says Dipietro." I know I can perform better". With Frans Nielsen out 2-4 weeks, Josh Bailey has a very heavy load with being the #1 center. The Islanders are falling behind in the playoff race, because of a 5 game losing streak. They play the Winnipeg Jets next who are in 12th place in the Eastern conference.

NHL Draft 2012

After trade with the Rangers, Islanders had 7 picks when this year's draft started, including two in the first round.

There are Islanders selections with comments from their GM Anatsu Southfield:

With 18th overall pick, Islanders picked defenseman Alex Gudbranson from Kingston, OHL. "After trading leading defender, our main goal is to improve our defense in this draft, of course. Alex is the main piece of our future in blue line", said Southfield about his first pick.

Islanders next pick was 27th overall (orig. SJ's). With that pick they drafted right winger Martin Frk from Halifax, QMJHL. "We had a little lack of prospective right wingers in our system. Now we got one good one. Frk has hands and speed and he is dangerous with the puck. Much of Michael Grabner in him."

Next Islanders pick was 40th overall in second round, originally Boston's pick. With that pick Islanders selected Marcus McIvor, defenseman from Brampton, OHL. "Marcus was the best player in top prospects game, I think. He is big defenseman, who has good foot. Really exciting player."

After second round Islanders made a deal, once again. Now they traded goalie Rick DiPietro to New Jersey for 3rd round pick in this year's draft. DiPietro lost starting goalie position to Al Montya during this year's playoffs. New Jersey was interested in him after their both goalies from last season decided to retire.

That pick was 81st overall pick. With that pick Islanders selected left winger Pontus Aberg from Djurgårdens IF, Elitserien. "Pontus is skilled forward from Sweden. He has great vision and hands. Will be interesting to watch and see closely how he will develop."

In the fourth round Islanders had one pick, 114th overall (orig. BUF's pick). They selected a Swedish, once again. This time a goalie Johan Sundstrom from Frölunda, Elitserien. "I think that after trading DiPietro away, we needed to draft some goalie. Now we drafted Johan."

Islanders had the last pick of 5th round. With 150th overall pick they drafted right winger Joel Wigle from Niagra, OHL. "We were high on him. He has a great legs in that big body. Only 18-years old so he will develop better as he get more age."

In sixth round, Islanders selected center Justin Kea, from Saginaw, OHL with 180th overall pick. "Kea is a fighter, powerhouse, passioned guy. I love this kid. He has a heart to play this game."

As the last pick of whole draft Islanders selected a goalie Malcom Subban from Bellevile, OHL. "When you are selecting more than one goalie in the draft, I think you have a better chances to get one elite one. We got two great potential having goalie today. I'm happy with that."

To recap the day, Islanders selected four forwards, two defenseman and two goalies. "I'm satisfied with our day. We got players who we have been scouting in this year and that's the main point of whole thing. Espcially happy I'm with fact that we got two great, big defensemen in this draft", said Southfield to last words of the day.

At the draft was maiden one other trade too. There Chicago traded Shawn Lalonde to Pittsburgh for 3rd round pick in 2013.

MISSISSAUGA MAVERICKS
2014 Off-season

Ain’t Broke; Don’t Fix It
Only Minor Tinkering From Brisebois In Off-season
The Mississauga News - Friday, September 19, 2014

Jarred_TinordivsBGSU.jpg

American giant Jarred Tinordi seems poised to claim spot on Mavericks blue-line

Content with the team that brought his team to the Eastern Conference Finals, Mavericks GM opted for only minor tinkering in the 2015 off-season. There were, however, a handful of noteworthy departure to free agency. Jordan Leopold was not re-signed by the Mavericks, who opted to sign younger blueliner Andrew MacDonald who put up 35 points last season for the New York Islanders. 4th liners Lennart Petrell, Ryan Jones and Derek Dorsett all left to pursue opportunities elsewhere, but Mississauga's new fourth line of Peter Regin, Jared Staal and new comer Ben Eager should be a very dependable 4th line. The Mavericks also did not resign Alex Burrows in hopes that 4th Overall pick Artturi Lehkonen can use his complete game to fill that third line role. After an offer sheet to wild card big man Kyle Beach failed, the Mavericks struck a deal with the Coyotes, acquiring James Wright. Wright is a versatile player, standing at 6'4" and being able to play centre, wing, and even played a little defense earlier in his career. Despite a decent showing of 10 points in 28 games, the Coyotes never kept Wright in the NHL for an extended period of time, and coach Kirk Muller hopes Wright's strength and speed can make him a mainstay. The 2014-15 also marks "Yakupov: Take 2" as the 1st overall pick in 2012 couldn't stick around with the big club last year, but hopes to perform more like a top young player this time around.

Looks like you have a pretty good team right now, RoyBoyBoy. Keep the updated coming!

Also, great read Anatsu! I think you you made a great selection with Aberg. Looks like you might have a steal.

Yeah, thanks! Not sure about that.. Aberg is 72 with C,B-,B- potential. Likely 75-78 range player. Maybe third liner some day. :)

McIvor was the best pick, I think. 68 with B,B,B potential. I liked him very much when playing that top prospects game.

Now I have a good depth in defense, even after trading Streit.

Barker 83 - Hamonic 83
Murray 84 - Tanev 77
MacDonald 81 - Jurcina 81
Eaton 79

Maybe defenders in the NHL.

Then in system: Wishart (76; B,B-,B) and of course Gudbranson (70; B,B-,B) and McIvor.

Trades:

To St. Louis:
Ryan Whitney

To Edmonton:

Reason: This trade was made because of our amazing defender spects that I wanted to play in the NHL now to develop. With Larsson and D.Hamilton on the top pairing, along with some other studs on second pair, we had Whitney on the third line pairing with no PP or PK time. With Backes, he instantly helps us in the push forward to hopefully making a playoff push in a season or two.

Islanders re-sign Barker, rumored to go after Konopka

Islanders have renewed defenseman Cam Barker's contract. Barker's new contract is 4 years, 2.940M per year.

"Cam was the one reason why could deal Mark Streit earlier this off-season. Cam has all tools to become one of the best offensive defenseman in game. With four year deal we get chance to watch him develop to elite player", said GM Southfield

New York Islanders are expected to go hard after center Zenon Konopka as free agent market opens. Konopka has history with the organization from last years. Konopka is hard-nosed center who has special gift to win face-offs.

New York Islanders have signed Zenon Konopka for three year, 1.110M per year making deal. Islanders also signed right wingers Harrison Zolnierczyk and Andreas Thuresson for one-year, two-way deals.

"We are happy that Zenon accepted our offer. He is perfect guy to play the way we play. I like him very much indeed", said GM Southfield.

"We have also made a offer sheet for Derek Dorsett. Offer sheet is two years, 1M per year deal. Dorsett will sign with us if Columbus don't match that offer."

Edit: Columbus matches Islanders' offer, so Dorsett will remain as Blue Jackets player. We have told that there are no more signings coming any soon.

Islanders sign their first round selection Gudbransson to ELC

New York Islanders have made an entry-level contract with their 18th overall selection in this year's draft Alex Gudbransson.

Deal was three year, two-way, worth of .790M dollars per year.

"I think Alex was one of the bests defenseman available to be drafted. We want him to be in our camp September, so we made the deal. He will more than sure play in the OHL next season. He is only 17 years old, turning 18 soon, so he isn't mature enough for NHL-level and he can't play in the AHL", said GM Southfield.

After signing Gudbranson, Islanders have 42 players signed for next season. That includes 23 forwards, 14 defensemen and 5 goalies.

Islanders sign Parros, Southfield doesn't expecting any more moves

New York Islanders have maiden a contract with free agent George Parros. Parros' contract is one year worth of 1.225M dollars.

"George is hard-nosed, tough guy, who fights for his team. We kind of missed that kind of guy when Gillies left organization this summer. George is also very wise guy off-the-ice and with young team, that's good thing. I'm happy that we reached agreement with him", said Southfield.

"I'm not expecting any more moves before camp. At least not free agent signings. We signed Parros and Konopka, guys who we were after. So that was a good summer for us."

Islanders' camp will be held two weeks before season start, mid September.

2012-2013 NHL Trade Deadline
Islanders Busy on Deadline

Islanders add Zach Hamill to their roster on Trade Deadline Day

The New York Islanders were very busy on the trade deadline, making four different trades. Zach Hamill was traded to the Islanders from the Boston Bruins in return for young goaltender, Anders Nilsson. Hamill has played only 22 games with the Bruins this year, putting up 7 points. Answers Nilsson, has not played any NHL games, but is an elite AHL goaltender. The next deal the Isles GM made was adding Michael Ryder to the lineup, along with a 2013 4th round in 2013. To the Dallas Stars went a pair of draft picks, a 2013 2nd rounder and a 2013 6th round. Still, the Islanders GM was not finished. He then added a draft pick to his list. Coming to the Islanders was the Columbus Blue Jackets 2013 1st round draft pick. Heading to the Jackets was defenseman Andrew MacDonald. This was a busy day for the Islanders, adding depth, size, prospects, and experience to the Isles lineup.

Islanders Trade:
Andrew MacDonald
Blue Jackets Trade:
2013 1st Round

Reason: This helps the Islanders with their rebuilding process. THis helps the Blue Jackets with their playoff run, as they are right in 8th place.

Islanders Trade:
2013 2nd Round
2013 6th Round
Stars Trade:
Michael Ryder
2013 4th Round

Reason: Much needed salary to the Islanders organization. Helps the Stars as they are in 15th place in the Western Conference.

Islanders Trade:
Anders Nilsson
Bruins Trade:
Zach Hamill

Reason: This will help the Bruins farm team. Also, when Thomas Retires, he will become their backup. Islanders get a young 3rd/4th line center.

Cizikas-Bailey-Okposo
Ullstrom-Reasoner-Parenteau
